While nobody can blame people for wanting to stay alive, this trend could create a bigger security problem for Nigeria in the future.
There is wisdom here. May Almighty God help our government to sustain fight and win against the terrorists. If communities stockpile arms there may be bigger challenges to confront in the future because of our systemic factors of corruption and massive unemployment.

The more communities arm themselves, the more weapons will spread across the country. The government may eventually defeat the terrorists, but how will it recover thousands of weapons already in circulation?

Some of these weapons could end up with kidnappers, armed robbers, political thugs, cult groups, and other criminals. Community defense groups formed today could also become rival armed groups tomorrow.

History has shown that it is much easier to stop insecurity from growing than to disarm people after they have acquired weapons and learned to depend on them for protection.

If government does not decisively tackle terrorism now, Nigeria may eventually face two problems instead of one: terrorists on one hand and widespread arms proliferation on the other.

A stitch in time saves nine.

A man whose only intention for getting a firearm is to protect himself and his family will never engage in criminality.

The so called self defense can be harnessed to local intelligence and working with the police authorities. Everyone can't just fold hands and waiting for some presidential buck.

UncleAyo:
All these fake imported religions have destroyed the normal mental processes of a lot of our people.

If you are following any of the two religion, you should know for fact that:

There is no heaven, there is no hell, there is no God (or god), there is no Allah, there are no angels, there are no demons, there are no spirits, there is no life after death, juju don't work, there is no eternal judgment, there is no karma, there was no historical Jesus. All those are figment of human imaginations and tools use by a very few some to control the very many others. The earlier you understand and accept these facts as facts, the happier and merrier your life and existence will be.

The religion you're currently claiming is the religion of your parents, if you were born into a different family of another religion (say Hinduism), that is the exact religion you will practice.

You were born without a religion in you, your factory reset has no religion in it. If you were to be a phone and they do factory reset on you today being a phone, there will not be anything found related to religion in your settings, files and file systems anymore; you learn religion only after your birth growing up.

Islam is idolatry and paganism, Christianity aswell is idolatry - All the world religion is idolatry, including all the Abrahamic religion. Holy communion is idolatory, bowing for a stone call Kaaba of the Bedouin tribes is also idolatory, killing of rams is idolatory, kissing or licking of a stone at mecca is idolatory, throwing of stone at pilgrimage is idolatory too.

Infact, Illah is what the Arabic call God and not Allah. Allah was one of the diety been worshiped before the invention of Islam. That is why muslims will say something like "la ilah ila huwa" meaning Allah is one Illah (God). Have you ask yourself why Prophet Mohammed's father who was an idol worshiper and who lived before the invention of islam has Allah in is name Abdullai== Abdu Allah? It is because Allah has been an idol worshiped by paganists before the Prophet received his revelations.

Nakedly circumambulations of the Kaaba, annual prigrimage to mecca, kissing of black stone, bowing towards the stone (stone worship) are all preislamic pagan practises by the nomadic Bedouin tribe and the same is what they still practice today.

All Abrahamic religion are idolatory, they only package them well and condemn your heritage as evil, whereas, Nigeria was better in terms of morality, honesty and integrity before they brought the foreign religions.

In peace loving, emotional intelligence, love for neighbors, respect for sanctity of life, we are even better than those who brought those religion with primitive leaders and prophets whose morality and characters are highly questionable.

Release yourself today from the shackles of religion. Stop wasting away your life and existence!

If you like, allow one illiterate alfa, imam or pastor to keep telling you "you will go to hell". When you die, your dead experience will be like the same experience you had before your conception (pregnancy) ie. There is nothing like afterlife. Or where were you before your mother gave birth to you?
Kudos bro
You're doing God's work.

It's time we stop outsourcing our existence and means of livelihood to the people in Abuja.

It's every Nigerian's God given right to defend himself and his means of livelihood in whatever fashion he chooses since the people in Abuja have failed to do their job.

Instead of pushing for citizens to arm themselves and stand up against the bandits and terrorists why not pressure the local politicians who in turn should pressure the Police and government to do something about it? How about voting out politicians who are doing nothing about it? They have the power but are not using it ... the people have the power but are also not using it. Insecurity is the number one problem affecting citizens.... not the politicians... they are heavily protected ... the citizens are not. The politicians are not concerned... they are only concerned about staying in office and increasing their personal wealth. We all know this.... so why do we even consider voting them back into office? Citizens taking up weapons will lead to more violence and insecurity. Weapons taken up for defence will also be used to commit crimes. Sit at home Mondays ... the weapons used to enforce that ... wasn't those weapons acquired for self protection of communities?... but turned against the communities? .. where are they now?... do you believe they are used for protection or crimes? Another set of people walking around with AKs... to protect cattle.... why?... isn't it about time that be outlawed?... and the law enforced? We need to vote out politicians who take us for granted.

If guns are not already easily get by how does all these rag tag militants and kidnappers come about the guns in their hands.

Please the OP should know we're in a critical situation now, anyone who could get himself armed through legal means should do so.

Op you are absolutely on point with this write up.

And guess what, this was how Rwandan genocide happened when everybody started retaliating due to inaction of authorities.

The problem is that the govt and armed forces and even the law are aiding and abbeting, shielding, covering, supporting these ruthless terroristtt and kidnapping groups.

PBAt don't want to address the problem for political reasons.

May be he fears if he addresses it like the GEJ did he will lose . Yes GEJ addressed it decisively at the tail end of his admin but dint properly address inec and his reelection strategy and politics. And again there was serious gang up politically against GEJ at the time.

So PBAT being jagaban himself is different from GEJ in that he has more fans, more clout and popular more respected by Nigeria standard . So there is likelihood that what befell GEJ is highly unlikely to happen to him if confronts the insecurity head on with all seriousness. He has nothing to fear, PBAT should tackle this insecurity aggressively it will massively improve his ratings ahead of the election next year. The political gang up against PBAT now cannot be compared to that against GEJ in 2015

Does the OP prefer that the people remain unarmed and helpless as they are getting wiped off the face of the Earth. The irony of all this is that the people terrorizing Nigerians with kidnapping and death for their gains now were also terrorizing Nigerians 300 year ago with death and kidnapping and slavery during the era of the trans-saharan slave trade. They are devoid of humanity and will continue to pick off others as long as it is profitable. The only way to arrest these evil people is the ability to fight back bestowed with the possession of arms.
In conclusion, If every Nigerian is armed, armed criminality will cease to exist.
He actually made a lot of sense. Good luck to Nigerians bearing arms. Inter tribal clashes will become more blurdy

The issue is that the rate of infiltrations of arms has already gone almost beyond control,if not where and how are those rag tag militants and kidnappers gets their weapons . So the fear the writer is entertaining is already here.

Therefore anyone who could get gun legally for self defence should get it.

Can your Govt protect you ..no
Dothey have a foreseeable plan or solution ..no
Are terrorists having a field day...sure p
They KNOW they have already failed but
WILL not tell you so they can keep looting
They just let you DIE
Do you know what a failed state is?

You don't want to become the new Somali & Libya when you already ARE SOMALIA & LIBYA
In Somalia and Libya with the many factions/regions they have stability if you don't know
Everyone is protected in his region. What failed is the Central Government ability to hold
It's the cowardice & disillusion, refusal to accept reality (as a normally brainwashed people)
that has you people looking like fuuls to the outside.

..If only you knew the plans in stock for you and your children.
I don't want violence, I don't want violence, I want peace
but when violence comes knocking at you door u japa to europe
make una continue

At that stage there will be no terrorists anymore. We will be our own terrorists which is easier to manage than this religious faceless maniacs running around our communities using the forest as cover.

There are more guns in the hands of civilians in the USA than most countries armies.

The government should put laws in place that allow legal gun ownerships.

The advantages of legal gun ownership far outweigh the disadvantages. (In the context of today’s Nigeria).
God bless you.

Nigerians remember terrorists too have people on nairaland, they are feeling the heat now, so their advocates are trying to reduce this heat. I suspect this Op.

Nigeria is a federal system, with seperation of powers, each state has a right to guarantee its security and ways of life, this is why the northern states had the right to start sharia they didn't ask for southern permission, every state is made up of different tribes. If you don't like the laws of a state don't go there, go to where suits you.

You are inconsequential, you can't tell a state how to secure it's people against terrorists and kidnappers.

Op is either an advocate for terrorists or doesn't understand how true federalism work, he should advise his state governor and government, other states have their advisers. Very useless post

I went to my friend's house in brampton and by 10 pm he was locking everywhere. He said there were lots of armed robbery, and I just nodded my head. I personally have 4 guns in my yankee house. All would kpai you so we dont have armed robbery, what we have is home burglars. If every home had guns(not every nigerian) terrorist would find other jobs. Fulani herdsmen would prefer ranching coa farmers are equally armed

I wish what you wrote was true and practiced

What i see is the opposite
As in the reverse is the case.
For example certain groups provoking the FCT Minister with cattles roaming all over the city of Abuja in continuous flagrant disobedience of the law.

Like they are spitting on his face and rubbing it in.

Ironically during El rufai tenure it wasnt like this. Abuja was so beautiful because he go all the support and cooperation.

If governors don't use the seperation of powers authority, it's because they are mediocre and self serving, they are in office to make money not to serve.

If the north can arbitrary have sharia law, and arbitrary release terrorists, this should tell you that true federalism is in our constitution not just practiced by the mediocre lazy governors. For what reason will I? Haba

What I am saying is that if the rest of us who are victims begin to retaliate , there will be anarchy and the situation will turn to hit me I hit you situation rapidly degenerating into Rwanda debacle. So the govt should act and do something fast about the situation.
