The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, Mr Fatai Tijani, has assured residents that a commercial area in Lagos remains safe following a bomb explosion suspected to be an Improvised Explosive Device (IED), which triggered brief panic in the area.

Tijani gave the assurance on Monday while addressing journalists at the scene of the incident at the Shoe Materials Market in Mushin, after security operatives conducted a comprehensive sweep of the area.

“We promptly deployed our EOD team after receiving reports of an explosion. The area was cordoned off and thoroughly searched,” he said.

He explained that preliminary findings indicated that the explosion was caused by an Improvised Explosive Device planted under a vehicle.

Tijani said the device was placed beneath the passenger side of the vehicle and detonated when the engine was started.

“The IED was under the vehicle by the passenger side. It exploded when the vehicle was started,” he stated.

According to him, one person sustained injuries in the incident and was taken to a hospital for treatment.

He said that the victim was in a stable condition.

The commissioner added that after a detailed sweep by EOD experts, no additional explosive devices were discovered in the area.

The police chief further called on members of the public, especially residents and traders in the affected commercial area, to remain calm and resume normal activities.

Explosions can result from any number of non-terrorist scenarios. Cooking gas might have been leaking from a canister, leading to a blast.

Welders using acetylene gas could have accidentally ignited the pressurized canister of gas.

Fuel from a tanker might have leaked unto the street, and then exploded when a cigarette was inadvertently dropped into the pooled liquid.

A power transformer may have developed an internal short-circuit, resulting in a massive blast.

An electrical fault could have developed in a car, resulting in a fire that spread to the vehicle's fuel tank.

An illegal fireworks factory might have caught fire for any number of reasons, igniting a big boom.

The list goes on, so it is premature to conclude that the explosion reported in Lagos is the result of foul play.

IED in Lagos? This has to be a joke.
No one plants a bomb and places it beneath the passenger side of the vehicle except there is a particular person being targeted and from what has been gleaned from the police commissioner's statement, that's not the case here.
Secondly, tying the trigger of the explosive to the car's ignition system reveals a level of sophistication I'm not sure the riff-raffs parading around as terrorists in Nigeria, are currently capable of. The DSS and NIA may be capable of such but highly exposed persons and VIPs will be more their target and not a market in Mushin.

If truly this was intended to be a terrorist attack, they'd place IEDs in the boot of the vehicle and seek to exact maximum death, destruction and terror. So exactly what was the aim here of this explosion? Assuming it was an actual terrorist act.

Something isn't right and I suspect the police may have just jumped the gun here.

Edit: Below is a side view of the vehicle the IED was supposedly planted under. Notice how the vehicle remains relatively undamaged.
