Ifeanyi Okowa Spotted At EFCC Office In Lagos by SlavaUkraini(op): 6:34am On Jun 23
Ifeanyi Okowa, former governor of Delta state, on Monday visited the Lagos office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Sources within the EFCC told TheCable that the former governor’s visit was in connection with an ongoing investigation of alleged financial misappropriation during his tenure.

In November 2024, the anti-graft agency arrested Okowa over an alleged diversion of N1.3 trillion during his eight-year tenure as governor of the state.

He was also accused of using public funds to acquire properties in Asaba, the state capital, and Abuja.

Speaking after his arrest, Okowa said funds belonging to the state were “judiciously used” during his tenure, adding that he was not afraid of investigation.

The former Delta governor accused the anti-graft agency of involvement in media trial.

“Whatever that is going on, I am not worried, and I have spoken about it. I am not afraid to be investigated,” Okowa had said.

“I may not be a saint, but I know I stepped in there as governor with a full hope and desire to help people to give the best for ourselves in this state within the limit of our resources.”

Okowa was governor of Delta from 2015 to 2023 on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

He was the running mate to former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar in the 2023 presidential election under PDP.

In April 2025, Okowa defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) alongside his successor, Sheriff Oborevwori, and several political officeholders in the state.

I wish Ned Nwoko was able to come from another political party as a senatorial candidate, it would have been a work over for him. It's only the special grace of God that will make Okowa to access the Nigerian Senate in the coming election. Otherwise, unknown candidate from any political party may clinch the position.

What is truly sickening is not merely the investigation of former public officials like dr Ifeanyi Okowa, for alleged misappropriation of public funds, but the fact that such investigations have become a recurring feature of our national life. The frequency with which former governors, ministers, and other public office holders are linked to allegations involving billions or even trillions of naira speaks volumes about the erosion of integrity, accountability, and moral values in our public institutions.

Nigerians should not normalize the expectation that those entrusted with public resources will eventually have questions to answer about missing funds. When corruption scandals become routine, it reflects a deeper crisis—not just in government, but in our collective values as a nation.

Equally troubling is the perception that investigations involving politically exposed persons rarely lead to thorough prosecution and meaningful convictions. The EFCC has recorded successes in many areas, but many Nigerians like myself remain unconvinced that the anti-corruption fight is applied consistently, especially when powerful political figures are involved. This perception, whether entirely accurate or not, weakens public confidence in our institutions and fuels the belief that justice is selective.

If Nigeria is to overcome the corruption that continues to undermine development, we must move beyond periodic investigations and media headlines. We need strong institutions that are genuinely independent, transparent procurement processes, effective judicial reforms, and swift prosecution of corruption cases regardless of political affiliation. Most importantly, we must rebuild a culture that values honesty, public service, and accountability from the family unit to the highest levels of government.

Corruption survives where there are weak consequences. It flourishes where political loyalty is rewarded above integrity. Until public office is viewed as a responsibility rather than an opportunity for personal enrichment, Nigeria will continue to struggle with the same challenges.

The fight against corruption cannot be left to the EFCC alone. It requires political will, institutional independence, civic vigilance, and a national commitment to ethical conduct. Only then can we begin to reverse the damage corruption has inflicted on our economy, our institutions, and our future.

Okowa was never arrested. Ned and others conspired to use the bad blood between Okowa and Tinubu - which stemmed from the previous election, to make Tinubu jail him. They petitioned the EFCC. Of course, a petition against an opposing political figure is constantly addressed. EFCC invited him to address the petition

There is no objective way to determine the **"best" governor** because it depends on the criteria being used—economic development, infrastructure, education, healthcare, fiscal management, job creation, security, or political influence.

* James Ibori is often credited by supporters for laying the foundation for modern Delta State's infrastructure and political influence, though his tenure was also surrounded by major corruption controversies.

* Emmanuel Uduaghan is remembered for his "Delta Beyond Oil" initiative, healthcare reforms, and relative stability.

* Ifeanyi Okowa is frequently praised for investments in roads, technical education, healthcare, and the Youth Agricultural Entrepreneurs Programme (YAGEP), though critics point to debt levels and unmet expectations in some areas.

* Sheriff Oborevwori is still serving, so many analysts believe it is too early to fairly rank his administration against governors who completed two terms.

- If judged by public popularity and political influence:

Many Delta residents would place **James Ibori** at or near the top.

- If judged by social programs, education, and healthcare:

Many would argue for **Ifeanyi Okowa**.

- If judged by continuity, stability, and diversification efforts:

Some would favor **Emmanuel Uduaghan**.

- If judged by current performance:
It is still too early to make a definitive assessment of **Sheriff Oborevwori**.

He is in APC. Nothing will happen to him. They will just sweep his case under the carpet like that of Mr. White Pussy (Yeye Bello), Akpabio, Oshiomowhole, all the current and former Norrhern Governors.

APC is a cesspit of criminals. You just have to be one to qualify for membership.
