Abia State University, Uturu, as a foremost state University in Nigeria founded in 1981, has maintained its leadership within and beyond the Eastern heartlands of Nigeria. It has remained resilient in the acquisition and dissemination of ICT-driven skills, comparable to graduates anywhere in Africa. Located in the Igbo heartland where skill acquisition and entrepreneurship constitute the culture of the people, the University’s academic plan is structured to act as the backbone in the realization of the entrepreneurship drive of the people; hence, the University runs a comprehensive entrepreneurship / skill acquisition programme as to actualize the University’s slogan of One Graduate-Two Skills.

1.) Director Of Works & Services

Location: Uturu, Abia

Person & Responsibility

The Director of Works & Services is the Head of the Works & Services Department of the University, responsible to the Vice-Chancellor for the development and maintenance of the infrastructure, equipment and sundry utilities of the University.

Requirements
The Candidate must possess the following qualifications:

A Degree / HND qualification in Engineering (Civil, Electrical or Mechanical) and be a registered member of the following professional bodies:
Council of Registered Engineers of Nigeria (COREN),
Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE).
A higher Degree in Engineering and a Fellowship of any of the above listed professional bodies will be an advantage.
The candidate should be ICT literate and not more than sixty (60) years of age.

Experience:

The candidate must have at least ten (10) years post-qualification experience.

Salary / Conditions of Service

The salary and conditions of service shall be as obtainable in Nigerian University system.
The appointment will be for one term of five (5) years only.

The University Librarian is a Principal Officer of the University, responsible to the Vice-Chancellor for the day-to-day administration and management of the University Library and the coordination of Library services in the University

Requirements

The Candidate must possess the following qualifications:

A good Honours Degree in Library and Information Science or related field from recognized University.

A higher Degree and membership of recognized professional bodies will be an added advantage.
Should not be more than sixty (60) years of age.

Experience:

The candidate must have at least ten (10) years post-qualification academic and professional experience beginning from year of graduation.

Salary / Conditions of Service

The salary and conditions of service are as obtainable in the Nigerian University system.
The appointment will be for one term of five (5) years only.

The Director, Physical Planning is the head of the Physical Planning Unit of the University, responsible to the Vice-Chancellor for the coordination and supervision of the physical infrastructural development of the University, ensuring that all such development projects conform strictly with the specifications of the institutions master plan.

Requirements

The Candidate must possess the following qualifications:

A good Honours Degree / HND in Architecture / Engineering (Civil, Electrical or Mechanical)
Must be a registered and current member of relevant professional bodies:
Nigerian Institute of Architects (NIA)
Architects Registration Council of Nigeria (ARCON) and or
Council of Registered Engineers of Nigeria (COREN)
Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE).
A higher Degree in Engineering and a Fellowship of any of the above listed professional bodies will be an added advantage.

Are these positions actually advertised? Are they not gotten by promotion? For example, when the Director’s spot is vacant, one of the Assistant Directors will be promoted to the Director position. Unless things are now politicised, whereby some positions are used to settle people

I had very good experiences at that school. I will not forget ABSU. My alma mater.

All the positions I'm seeing here are for insiders. You can't just jump from nowhere and become VC or Librarian. The advert is for fulfilment of law purposes and so every one of the qualified staff will have official notice to start submitting their expressions of interest.

These positions are not got by promotion except on Acting capacity, substantive heads of such office in both federal and state universities are being advertised for and interview conducted. When the Governor of a state or the governing council/VC of a federal university wants to do a diligent work, they will look for expertise to fill such positions; for example the immediate past bursar of UNN is a UNIZIK staff, the current director of information and public relations of UNIZIK is a SUN newspaper editor, the list is endless, even the current VC of UNIZIK is a staff of UNN, few years ago the Rector of a polytechnic in Anambra state was an Hausa man, e.t. c
Inasmuch as politics may play a big role, being able and capable matters a whole lot! The current Governor of Abia State can go for whom he thinks is the most qualified, that's his normal way, especially in non-key political positions. As for Political appointments, anything can happen!
