This is funny. grin
It's not funny but actually sad. It just shows Kidnappers/bandits/terrorists are running amok and controlling the lives of people in the hinterlands.

You should not find it funny because if the whole thing is not checked , people living in the city may end up being victims when they are done milking people in the hinterlands.

I think this AIT version of the report is better and more understandable than what punch newspapers put out.

So indeed, there was IED attached to a vehicle parked on a street. The vehicle owner is a new resident of the area who just parked in few months ago; he got to the place he normally parks his vehicle, starts his vehicle only for the IED attached to underneath of passengers' side to detonate early in the morning.

There are some real security issues here which I believe our security agencies should learn lesson from and advise the public soonest.

1. Houses in areas like Mushin, Yaba, Ebutte mẹta, oyingbo, Isale Eko, etc parts of Lagos hardly have parking space. So, the residents of those areas who own either private or commercial vehicles regularly park on the road/streets overnight where the vehicles are left unattended to. This alone is a huge security threat and fertile ground for mischievous elements to carry out attacks except there's a deliberate effort at community policing in Such areas.

2. The owner of the vehicle just moved into the area and from what the baálé of the community told press men, not much is known about the identity of the car owner, his day job and his inclinations. It may look like poke nosing, but I think it's high time people get interested in their neighbor's business. You need to know who Ur new neighbor is, what he does and what leanings he has. See something, say something. Landlords too need to do more background check on their potential and incumbent tenants.

3. The police actually need to focus on the main purpose of "stop and search". They should not just collect N500 or N1000 and wave vehicles to pass at checkpoints; they should actually check people's card for explosives, contrabands and other illegal items.

4. Finally, people should remain vigilant and raise alarm when they notice strange faces and unusual activities in their area.
Our police stop and search is empty exercise.

I was driving home yesterday in the evening. They stopped me and asked what I had in the boot. I was about telling him I have only my coolant on there, the guy said "you can go". I just remembered the discussion you and GloriousGbola had here concerning this. Smh

This perspective comes from a place of privilege and doesn't reflect the reality many people have faced. By the time you have had issues at a police check and stop you will come back to retract this statement. Guy just pray to never enter into police wahala with your car.

They whole stop and search exercise is just an avenue for them to extort once Ur paper is not complete or they notice an infraction on Ur part.

Dem no really dey search anything again and it's not a good thing considering the insecurity being experienced in this country.

we have all had issues with police before.

in a time when there are terrorists about we all have to be very vigilant.

if you go to hotels like marriot and there is fuel in your boot they will not let you in
this was also shoprite policy before.

it is where we are now.

i shared that report with my colleague. we have a site with multiple a b k sleeping there. so who know if the casually allow terrorists among them

What are u even saying? Did u read what he posted at all? You are sounding as if he's advocating for extortion or police harassment. Which one be place of privilege again?

We are are sinpky saying the right thing police should be doing when they stop you on the road is to check your papers and verify your vehicle is not a stolen vehice. Then they should check if you are not carrying contrabounds like arms and ammunitions.

Yes, he is speaking from a position of privilege. He hasn't experienced the kind of rigorous searches that often take place at those checkpoints after being stopped.

What I have experienced both personal car and with public transportation are stories for another day.

Well, I have experienced real stop and search on one or two occasions while driving and it didn't go beyond checking and checking till they were satisfied and waved me to go.

As for public transport, I've not experienced it but I have read about instances where they profile people based on their appearance and subject them to rigorous search. Somone narrated how the keke he was commuting in was stopped, he was searched and searched; they found nothing incriminating on him and allowed him go.

Although I think I now understand u sha, cos I read online how Naija police found viagra on a guy and they called it "hard drugs". They threatened to arrest him and take him to NDLEA. It was on that premise they eventually extorted him.

Nigerian police can also create incriminating evidence from you. They can see a nailcutter and call it a weapon. They might see a pen and call it a weapon, they can see a tattoo and call it a gang sign, And the next thing is follow us to station to explain. Where you can either be extorted maximally or even roped into a bigger crime

Your age, and outlook also have a say in how they relate with you. A 22yr old with dreads and jeans will be treated differently from a 40yr old in official dressing

Which kind police wahala when I am a law abiding citizen?

I even asked him whether I should park cos he stopped me right on the road. He just went ahead to ask what I had in the boot.

As long as your papers are always upto date...and you have the necessary things needed in your car, you dont fear no police wahala.

Bro....unless I am rushing to meet up with something, there is no way their stop and search will take me more than 10mins.

I have everything ready to give them if they ask.

And if they wan search..hehe...there is literally nothing in my boot. I love to keep it clean. I only have coolant, because na 4 litres I dey buy and keep in my boot.

If there is any grain of sand in my car, you can literally see it, once you look inside.. I'm a tidy person o. And I do my best to avoid trouble.

Unless you wan lift up the chairs...be my guest

Unless they wan ask of tinted permit. My own sef na very light tinted, you fit no know

Yeah, Nigeria police are expert at that but since the ENDSARS protests and it's aftermath they've been a bit reasonable Sha. They reduced open and unprovoked intimidation/harassment since ENDSARS.
