World Cup 2026: Didier Deschamps to miss France's final group game following death of his mother

France head coach Didier Deschamps will miss his side's final World Cup group game following the death of his mother, the French Football Federation (FFF) has confirmed.

Deschamps, 57, learned of his mother's passing on Tuesday morning and has been given permission by FFF president Philippe Diallo to fly back to France to attend the funeral.

France, who have already qualified for the knockout stages after beating Senegal and Iraq in their opening two games, face Norway on Friday in Boston to determine the winner of Group I.

In a statement, the FFF said assistant coach Guy Stephan will take charge of the squad until Deschamps returns.

As a player, Deschamps won the World Cup in 1998 and the European Championship in 2000 with France.

He became manager of the national side in 2012, and leading them to a World Cup final victory in Russia in 2018 and a defeatby Argentina in the final in 2022.

France beat Senegal 3-1 in New Jersey last week, followed by 3-0 victory- which included a two-hour weather delay in Philadelphia - against Iraq on Monday.

You say goodbye by paying your respects as the body is lowered into the grave.
That is a large part of your history you are saying goodbye to.

Yes...! If your own child's birth means little or nothing to you, that doesn't mean it's the same for every other man.

That burying a dead person means a lot to you doesn't mean it's the same for everyone else.

Bottom line... The hue or ruckus over a man wanting to be at the birthing of his child was as misplaced as anyone trying to do the same in Deschamps case too.

So going to witness your child being born is not in itself special?
Chances are there that the mother or child might not even make it. Do you know better than him that flew down there? Not every thing is on the media. You just know he flew, do you know if there are deeper reasons?
Until you become a celebrity and in their shoes ,and face such a situation, then you will understand how devastating statements like yours could be.

No one should compare between life and death.
Even the team will agree that family always comes first in all you do.

Match against Norway normally would be with 2nd Team to try out young ones.

Most coaches fear match rust. I would change the entire 11 to see who impresses me. If a striker "mistakenly" scores hattrick .... Straight double promotion to first 11 shocked

Child birth is a joyful occasion. A funeral is a time of mourning.

I remember Bebeto's famous goal celebration after his wife gave birth while he was playing for Brazil at the 1994 WC.

On the other hand the death of a loved one is very depressing and demoralising and a player or coach who is dealing with grief won't find it easy to concentrate on his job.
