DSS Clears Kaduna Herder, Awards ₦3 Million as Internal Review Expands Justice for Wrongfully Detained Nigerians

The Director-General of the Department of State Services, Oluwatosin Adeola Ajayi, has ordered the release of a Kaduna-based herder, Nura Idris, after an internal investigation cleared him of alleged links to Boko Haram terrorists.

A statement by the DSS notes that Idris, a farmer and livestock rearer from Soba Local Government Area of Kaduna State, was arrested in June 2024 by another security agency in Suleja, Niger State, and later transferred to DSS custody over suspected terrorist links.

Following a comprehensive review of his case, the DSS found no evidence connecting him to terrorism. The Director-General immediately ordered his release and approved a ₦3 million compensation package to support his reintegration, with additional assistance promise to help him rebuild his livelihood.

Speaking after his release, Idris expressed gratitude to the DSS, describing the gesture as life-changing and commending the humane treatment he received while in custody.

The release forms part of the DSS's ongoing review of inherited and prolonged detention cases aimed at ensuring innocent individuals are not unjustly held.

Meanwhile, the Service has reviewed more than 30 cases, paying over ₦300 million in compensation to wrongfully detained persons.

The exercise has also led to the release and compensation of several individuals previously accused of links to IPOB and other terrorist groups after investigations established their innocence.

The DSS says the initiative reflects its commitment to balancing national security with the protection of citizens' rights, while strengthening public confidence in the nation's security institutions.

Congratulations to him. Free at last. The DSS should be more detailed in their investigation before apprehending people. At least it’s believed they have sophisticated intelligence machinery.

It really makes no sense because at the end of it all, they'll still free the main Boko Haram, pay them huge sum of money and reintegrate them into the society.

He deserves far more than the ₦3m awarded.

We never hear of this kind of compensation for anyone in the other regions of Nigeria.

Compensated out of fear or intimidation from a higher force? Compensated because he's truly innocent? I guess we'll never know the real "truth".

That said, compensating someone who was wrongfully detained is the right thing to do. However, justice shouldn't depend on where a person comes from. Anyone—whether in the North, South, East, or West—who is wrongfully arrested, detained, or tortured deserves accountability, a public apology with appropriate, and fair compensation. Equal justice should apply to every Nigerian!

He shouldn't collect that money,but sue them for a bigger amount instead....see as they quickly Rush to offer him 3m so he can forget about his right......he should get a good lawyer, for this kind of case some lawyers can work for you on credit till the case is closed...... overnight billionaire

If he sue and get awarded, he won't get shishi except the government is willing to pay.
Find out about judgement debt against the govt, you will know it's best he takes the 3m and walk away.
No judge will give a garnishee order that will lead to enforcement
