A family in Umuebi, Obikabia, Isiala Ngwa North LGA, has asked the Abia State Government to intervene over a poultry farm sited next to their home. The farm belongs to Dr. Nwambuisi Elenta Elele and is located beside the residence of Mr. Cyril Ishmael. Residents say the location has raised concerns about approvals for commercial farms in residential areas. The main complaint is offensive odour from the facility. Villagers say it has made living difficult and forced them to keep windows and doors shut. Journalists and a team from the Abia State Ministry of Environment were denied access to the farm on separate visits. The farm is secured with a high fence and high-tech gadgets. Villagers said Mr. Ishmael met Dr. Elele before construction to raise health concerns, but the dialogue was ignored and the farm was built. They also said Dr. Elele has refused to relocate and plans to add piggery and fishery units to the facility. Jude Ishmael, a family member, said their house was built before the farm. “The odour is unbearable. We cannot get fresh air. It has been an unpalatable experience,” he said. According to Jude, a Ministry of Environment team confirmed the farm should not have been sited there. He said Dr. Elele was invited by the Ministry but allegedly failed to appear and threatened to sue instead. “The family wants a peaceful resolution. Our health is at risk because of the odour,” he said, as he called on Governor Dr. Alex Otti to intervene. Mrs. Abasiama Udofia, Head of Department, Environmental Assessment, Abia Ministry of Environment, declined to comment, saying she was not permitted to speak.

Don't they have an environmental protection agency in the state? Why must the governor be the one to intervene? |

The business itself is not safe in that area. If all the concerns tabled by all the parties involved are not resolved, it might lead to irreparable damage to the business. Some locals might go and position those fowls there |

That's the peoples governor. They knew one way or the other Alex Otti will come through, unlike the president we have in Nigeria that haven't granted single interview on our local TV stations since he became president He's too big to talk to us |

Nigeria's biggest problem isn't the absence of laws rather it's the absence of strong institutions willing and able to enforce them. How does a private individual have the audacity to deny officials from the Ministry of Environment access to a facility? Well unless due process wasn't followed if not, no one should be above lawful inspection. This is what happens when institutions become weak and powerful individuals begin acting as though they are above the law. The "big man" mentality continues to thrive while ordinary citizens pay the price. Who, in good conscience, establishes a poultry farm in the middle of a residential area? Must people sacrifice their health, clean air, and quality of life because someone wants to maximize profit? The law must be applied equally to everyone. Until our institutions are stronger than the influence of powerful individuals, environmental abuse and impunity will continue to endanger innocent Nigerians. Imagine calling on governor because a man is not allowing officials of ministry of environment to do their job. |

Mounting a full poultry in a residential area. People can be very inconsiderate. Just same as churches and mosques mounting large speakers in residential areas. |

If you have money for farming, just buy 2 small female cows and a male, employ one small aboki who takes them to nearby farms for feeding, in less than no time you have herds of cows and turn a multi millionaire.... |

A good friend of mine once set-up a big poultry farm in her father's compound which is a residential area some years ago in ph. When the smell from the farm became so offensive, the people in the neighborhood came together and issued a warning to my friend's father for them to relocate the farm. So my friend lingered in relocating the farm because of finance and land. So the people took laws into their hands by throwing stones into the compound occasionally. So my friend finally got a land and relocated her poultry farm there. |

Local for my understanding means going spiritual, ants infestation, cats, snakes, owl or the invocation of any other wild animal. But make them try physical first. Stones, I go just enter bush a good distance away from that poultry, 1 hour daily of stoning on the roof of the poultry, just 5 people daily of a stone per minute per person in 1 week problem solved. Na the poultry owner go call meeting, no be na all this Governor epp us. You can do poultry in a residential area, just pay people to clean it and change sawdust regularly, that's all, there will be no smell at all. I've know people who have poultry and piggery inside their compound but if them no show you, you will never know because there is absolutely no smell. If you buy with wickedness, your change must be wickedness. BigSaint1914: |

Many many times I been banned for using the same exact words of the person I was responding to and they didn't get banned. Get used to the uneven enforcement of the rules. I could care less if I get banned or not. Message is passed already. |

The residents of that community shud arm themselves with trumpets, horns, siren... Anything to make excessive noise (day and night) and watch how the farm owner would relocate faster than the speed of light |

My candid suggestions are as follows: 1. The residents should in the name of doing their own lawful business too go and get a bag of cashew nut not minding the cost, even if they will contribute to o buy it. Then start burning a handful of it, say a paint bucket every three three days at night. 2. Get uncracked palm kanel, in sacks, set them on non combusting fire once a week. By the time this is done for just three weeks, nobody will tell the man again to relocate his facility into far away bush because him go dey do mass burial of chicken 🐔 on daily basis. Try this and don't bother to thank me later. 😁😁😁 |
