frankson1:Nobody forced anyone to give tips. It is always given out of courtesy. See, if you like you tips and if you like , you ignore them. No one will even dare say a word. The good part is, tipping is after after the service has been provided. So it’s not as if they can decide to change the quality of an already provided service. On the employers part, let me reveal one open-secret of a capitalist system. Their operational budget including that for salary is usually earmarked just within that allowable by law and market factors. No charities, no emotion. If they have a way to not even pay at all, they will take it. They do that which the law allows them to do and are compelled to do more based on market factors. For instance the availability of waiters would determine how much employers are willing to cough out. There is a reason it is called Free Market Economy. You can take your waiting skills elsewhere, where they are willing to pay what you demand, if it’s sustainable for the business. |

I don't see any nonsense in the report. BBC says it as it is. Is like a foreigner who comes to Nigeria and the police starts asking him for money. Or the foreigner encounters area Boys and they're demanding for money It is your knowledge of the place that can save you from embarrassments Kobojunkie: |

It’s not as compulsory as the media portrays it to be. I only tipped those who gave great service and I wasn’t harassed or called out by those I didn’t tip. For reference, in New York and Miami. |

Is this not the same thing as Police Roger me? Ah! If it's happening in US then all hope might be gone in redeeming our police. Please God let no police officer see this news. |

MadamDMadam:Some establishments allow waiters add it to your bill automatically . It's only a few select states that forced all restaurants to ensure their workers earn minimum wage . You will be blacklisted by restaurants if you refuse to pay up a tip |

Nigeria does not have tipping culture. Instead people like you called it bribes/ if police officers beg for money you will say they're taking bribes, now you have seen that USA has instituted bribes and called it TIPS. the same way they change corruption to LOBBYING jordyspices: |

Ironfaceman:The tipping culture is so weird. In my opinion, customers tip only if they so wish. I drove into a filling station to fill my tank with just 10k naira worth of fuel @ 1280 per litre, and the lady attendant was telling me "Oga no forget me oo" and the way she said it was with a deep sense of entitlement. Me wey dey vex say my 10k couldn't even buy 10litres of fuel coupled with the terrible economy, someone that's being paid salary out of my patronage was asking me to pay extra for doing her job. I responded with a question "Na me employ you?" she went cold and silent immediately. |

OlujobaSamuel:Then if there is this kind of understanding about tipping system even in developed nation like the US,why do we always make it look as if it is a Nigeria thing? People go to media houses or make videos and post in social media to castigate Airport workers, police on checkpoint, supermarket and hotel securities and bar Waiters for being notorious for "Corporate Begging". They try to make us know that such "bad" culture can never never be seen in saner climes. So,is the US or Canada no longer saner climes? Though I don't support a culture of making tippings look compulsory or be like a constitutional rights that you must give for services provided, but I think it is appropriate to "appreciate" some lowly paid workers in some corporate environments VOLUNTARILY for services rendered to you. I went to a supermarket for my weekend stuff last week,I picked a basket and was going round to pick stuff. One of the staff there,a young lady, just walked up to me and said, Sir,let me help you with the basket. She carried the basket and followed me around the supermarket till I finished picking what I wanted and she took it to the counter. I finished paying, she greeted me bye without asking for anything. I was the one,out of appreciation ,who called her and voluntarily gifted her something.Cos to me,she deserves it. So my point is that,as from today that I am hearing this news, nobody should make corporate begging a Nigerian thing again. If any staff in an airport, supermarket, restaurant, etc ask you for a tip,if you want to give, give and if you don't want to,pass and go your way. They won't beat you. Stop shouting in every news media that people beg you for tips only in Nigeria that you can't see such a thing in America or Europe when you haven't left the shores of Nigeria before. This message is only for those that always make this unfounded comparison. |

Kobojunkie:Between 15 and 20 %? Anything that has a benchmark is no longer voluntary. Tipping should be voluntary, but when you placed a cap, then you make it involuntary which is not proper. |

Remember when I work in an hotel that year. If you buy softdrink or anything, service charge is included in your bill. Now these service charge income was suppose to be shared between managers and all staff but greedy hotel manager and owner pocket everything. And it's still like this in all this medium stars hotels and five stars hotels... They won't share service charges income or tip among staff |

Ironfaceman:That's a lie,a very big one at that. Which $2 is equivalent to #4,000? I just changed dol and it's #1,400 per dol. So $2 is #2,800. Stop misleading the reading public! |

Pacesetter123:It's never a Nigerian thing ooo. Although I rarely give to security dudes, but I do give attendants or cashier. The reason why I don't give them is due to the way they treat people at times. They can rubbish you for a big car that might be driven by a messenger |
