Yes, I was right! No common sense!

Common sense would have made you realise that nobody said that everybody should do the same.

But you can never get it, not in a million years.

Na today, I know someone who only sold water and sent all his children through university when Nigeria was very good and in the hands of blessed leaders, right now, even tangible business owners are struggling to keep up not to talk of water seller, akara seller or moimoi seller undecided undecided

The way some people reason eeeh! You're comparing the Nigeria of the 80s,90, until 2014 with Nigeria of nowadays right? Make una dey continue dey defend the rubbish remi had said.

Mid 90s when schooling in Ilorin, my 100L fees for a whole session were 1,663 Naira. The receipt is still with me at home till date. In same period, a kuli kuli or akara seller could conveniently raise her children, even build a house. I remember iyadunni alakara osu back in the days. When going to see grandma in ekiti, our vehicle would stop there and we'd buy akara. She built upstairs with the proceeds. In same period, my school principal was riding 505 evolution Peugeot car while his vice was driving 504GL. They bought it brand new.
In same period, pry school headmasters owned volkswagen beetle cars which they bought with their salary, cash. Is it same situation today? How much is a public university fee today and how many akara can you sell to garner that?

Na God, wey wan deal with remi and her husband make her spew that trash. Nowadays, not even a university professor could afford a used car, talk more of owning a brand new car. His entire life savings wont get him one except he received grants from outside for his research work or he's so lucky to garner some money during his sabbaticals overseas. In my undergraduate days, i knew profs who drove prado jeeps. Remi's comment clearly indicates how far and out of touch she and her husband are, from the masses. So sad. Her unfortunate statement would have made sense, had we been living in the 80s/90s. This is 2026 for crying out loud. This generation that met nothing but crumbs of the Nigeria's glorious past must not take her comment lightly, except they want to continue living with their parents after graduation due to government's failures. When China is empowering their youths and startups with huge sums of money with scholarship annually, someone is talking about akara empowerment in 2026? Hahahahahaha!!!

No wonder Nigeria is in such a disarray today. Even those selling akara today on the major parks in lagos, how much do they make daily? A lot of women quit that business for pure water cos of rising cost. Those commuters in lagos could bear a witness to this. Before, akara sellers would mob at you via the window but now, its pure water, soft and energy drinks sellers you'd see everywhere. What's the cost of cooking gas today per kg? What of ororo, beans...in fact nobody dey chop beans back in the days. They used to call those eating it prisoners because that's the majort meal for them. Nobody goes to farm nowadays for fear of bokoharam and Niger republic that used to supply us beans to compliment local production had shut their borders against us. The available few is so expensive. What of the frypan, nylon or leaves? It's so unfortunate where we've found ourselves today as a nation. Under Tinubu's watch, naira became tissue papers. The cfa that I used to exchange with naira and my pocket would look like someone who kept heavy stones inside it had left naira far behind now. We're now 5th largest economy in africa, from 1st but nobody is talking about that, only defending rubbish. Isokay.

Anyone defending remi's unfeeling post is worse than an enemy of Nigeria.
What is next now? May be you will be go and kill them.

Some of you people, just to have relevance in the defense of an irresponsible government, will just shut the obvious and talk some motivation crap.

For goodness sake, under which government did she start her moi moi business?

And you will understand the plight she had either maritally or personally before venturing out to such.

And of course - NOT EVERYBODY SUCCEEDS IN THIS BUSINESS WITHOUT THEIR OWN SECRET FORMULAS, EITHER IN PERSONAL CREATIVITY OR SKELETONS IN THEIR CUPBOARD!

Point is, NO GOVERNMENT SHOULD BE PROUD THAT UNDER IT, PEOPLE SWITCHED TO SURVIVAL MODE- GOING TO ABACHA STOVES INSTEAD OF ELECTRIC COOKERS!

Why did you then label ABACHA as the dark one? What nansense!

Una go celebrate fuel scarcity as an opportunity to exercise to your stupid work places rather than insist your government delivers on it's responsibilities!

Congratulations on the woman on using her God given potential to thrive in a failed system. God equally give you health to relax and reap the fruit of your efforts.

There are threads on Nairaland where low income earners are celebrated when their children graduate. I am very sure there was one on some dude selling firewood or toothpicks

I saw something Bangladesh and remembered Muhammed Yunus who created grameen bank to give microloans to poor women

https://www.investopedia.com/terms/m/muhammad-yunus.asp

Economist and Nobel Peace Laureate Muhammad Yunus has become internationally renowned for his revolutionary system of micro-credit (small loans to entrepreneurs too poor to qualify for traditional bank loans) that has helped millions to escape poverty.

Born in the seaport city of Chittagong, Bangladesh, Yunus’ life is motivated by his vision of a world without poverty. It began in 1976, when he saw village basket weavers living in abject poverty despite their skill. Considered poor credit risks, the artisans were forced to borrow money at high interest rates to purchase bamboo and made no profit after repaying moneylenders. From his own pocket, Yunus made a loan to a group of women who repaid the funds and, for the first time, made a small profit. Yunus realized that by means of small loans and financial services, he could help the poor free themselves from poverty.

In 1983, he established the Grameen (Village) Bank, founded on his conviction that credit is a fundamental human right. Through the last quarter of a century, the bank has stood as the flagship of a 100-country network of similar institutions, enabling millions to escape poverty through individual economic empowerment.

Professor Yunus is a member of the board of the United Nations Foundation and has received numerous international awards for his humanitarian endeavors.
This is the same principle. People can talk down on akara or other menial jobs but they are reality. It is also the same way some people will talk down on the rougher aspects of engineering like being on site, or medicine like being on call, especially if they are for very wealthy backgrounds.

As an aside, unfortunately Nigerians imho do not have the character for microloans

Every argument that they've brought has been defeated and this has caused them to keep shopping around for reasons why the gesture is bad.

The simple fact of the matter is that there is only one reason why they are against it, it's because they hate the person that is doing it. This would have been the best thing in the world if it was being done by a politician that they like.

But the fact is that this is not about the person doing it, it is about the beneficiaries and they are wicked people for wishing bad on the people that are benefitting from this.

Complete with real time made up falsehoods.
I bought gas yesterday at 1500/kg. A far cry from 1000/kg of early this year, but it has been going down from 2000/kg since Thursday (I buy gas everyday)

I also asked how much a 3kg cylinder is and it is 18k brand new not 24k.

And just as I bought used pcs, and was looking at buying a used korope for project ops, akara sellers are not going to buy brand new utensils or pots. They will also have strategies for buying cooking ingredients at lower costs.

All that buying brand new is for founder entrepreneur types who are getting funding from investors.
