Tinubu Unveils Major NYSC Reform Plan: Six-Week Orientation, Skills Training to Take Center Stage

The Federal Government has announced plans for a comprehensive reform of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration proposing significant changes aimed at equipping Nigerian graduates with practical skills, improving their safety, and increasing employment opportunities.

Speaking on the proposed overhaul, the Minister of Youth Development said the reforms are designed to transform the NYSC scheme from a largely ceremonial programme into one that better prepares young Nigerians for today's competitive job market.

Among the key proposals is the extension of the NYSC orientation camp from the current three weeks to six weeks. The additional time is expected to be dedicated to vocational training, digital skills, entrepreneurship, leadership development, and career readiness programmes.

The government also plans to discontinue military drills and the traditional passing-out parade, shifting the focus toward innovation, productivity, and skills acquisition. According to officials, the objective is to ensure corps members leave the programme with practical knowledge that can support self-employment and improve their chances of securing meaningful jobs.

Safety is another major component of the proposed reforms. The government says it intends to strengthen security measures for corps members deployed across the country while working with relevant agencies to improve their overall welfare during service.

The announcement has generated mixed reactions from Nigerians. While many have welcomed the emphasis on skills development and employment, others have raised questions about the financial implications of extending the orientation programme and whether existing NYSC facilities can effectively accommodate a six-week camp.

Education stakeholders believe that if properly implemented, the reforms could help bridge the gap between academic qualifications and workplace demands, making Nigerian graduates more competitive in both local and international labour markets.

The proposed changes are expected to undergo further consultations before full implementation.
