It was a terrifying moment inside the event hall. Without any warning, part of the ceiling suddenly gave way and came crashing down right onto the crowd.

People started screaming and scrambling to get out of the way as panels and debris rained down. Chaos took over the whole place in seconds.

Thankfully, early reports say most people got out without serious injuries.

The incident has got many questioning the safety of these POP ceilings. Others are pointing fingers at bad installation or poor maintenance.

What could’ve been a total disaster turned into a very lucky escape.

A place with loud sounds should not have pop installed. The damage has been done over the years due to the reverberating sounds from the loud speakers used in this event centers. Its advisable that anywhere there will be a reverberating sound or constant vibration, POP should not be advised by building experts.

Are Nigerian engineers so dumb that they cannot do the easiest of fix to this embarrassing problem that keeps coming up Everytime it's an under decking?

It's as simple as placing ceiling fan hooks allover the decking before casting.

This way the pop installers have a structure to hold when installing the underdeckings

You are very correct, they even hand off the work to their apprentices to do it after collecting money for the work, and they move for another contract elsewhere. I experienced this attitude recently and it didn't go well with me, anytime I come to look at the work, I see some other persons doing it. He keep telling me they are well trained for the job.

The alternative is PROPER installation method relating to decking. Knowledge and planning is key. If you look again at the video and pictures, the whole POP was gummed to the decking ceiling. This is not a safe method. Overtime the gum will dry out and the weight of the POP will cause the installation to fail leading to collapse.

For All decking ceilings, iron (rod) hooks should be introduced when decking the structure. During POP installation, the POP should be anchored to the iron hooks instead of gumming as with this situation. If the rod hooks were missed during decking, these have to be introduced by an iron bender before POP installation.

If the structure is not a decking, the POP should be tied to the wood rafters. You will be fine.

I personally learnt from this experience on my own as it seemed cracked always appeared anytime I played by powerful audio at home. Although quality of the POP is very light and trashy why cracks appearing every where and then

This happened at Wetland event centre,Orhuwhorun road.
It was such a tragic moment last weekend.
