Speaking further on the planned NYSC reform, the Special Adviser to President Tinubu on Policy Coordination, Hadiza Bala Usman, revealed that the NYSC orientation camp would be restructured into three phases:

- The first two weeks will focus on civic responsibility, national values, and leadership development.

- The next two weeks will cover career mapping, financial literacy, business planning, and access to finance.

- The final two weeks will provide specialised training based on each corps member’s chosen career stream.


Under the new framework, corps members will select one of the newly created 11 specialised streams upon registration and will receive specialised training throughout the orientation programme in preparation for future employment and national service.

The 11 specialised streams are: Agric Corps, Medical Corps, Education Corps, Tech and Digital Corps, Legal Corps, Public Service Corps, Infrastructure Corps, Green Corps, Enterprise Corps, Creative Economy Corps, and Paramilitary and Security Corps.

She added that the specialised streams will equip graduates with practical skills tailored to their academic backgrounds, career interests, and the country’s workforce needs.

Usman noted that the reforms also review deployment procedures, including how corps members are posted across states, with greater consideration for prevailing security realities.

And some people will out of hate keep wailing we do not have a hands on president for the first time since obj......this guy is laying the foundations for a working country and deserves all the support......you cant build something on nothing,Nigeria's major problem is structural and if the structure isnt right we cant move forward, it cant be perfect from the start but we can only make it better by starting first.

Teaching and training them is one thing... Empowering and ensuring that they function in those areas remains the koko.

Without mobilization after training, then you guys are just doing the usual eye service to add to your book of "Statistical Achievements".

If there are no industries, business grants, paid mentorship or internship schemes, etc, then this is either a huge joke or another avenue to siphon funds as usual.

Scrap the damn program in its entirety... It isn't unifying the nation in any way.

Move this scheme into the universities... Work with the school administrators, bring in technocrats and industrial giants to help mentor and raise the next generation of entrepreneurs... Give grants and soft loans to help them get started... provide security and stable electricity.

Do these, and watch the nation explode into a hub of industrial and entrepreneurial greatness.

Nice initiative. However, I'd like the national service to be like 3 months training instead of 2 weeks, then the rest of the time for industry experience.

That wasn't said to graduates. It was to poor informal uneducated people that want to fish & don't want a handout.

This same government gave 50 million naira each to 45 tech undergraduates/new graduates in Universities across the country that had companies and had developed software or apps (the Student Venture Capital Grant)
When they were all collecting the money for their companies and celebrating all over twitter, we didnt hear your complaints.
Tinubu that is serious about education and made it a major pillar of his administration is the one that will tell graduates to go sell akara?

PS - Students that entered federal universities in 2023 on a 4 year course are going to their final year right now, on schedule.

interesting submission, more like incorporate the so called reform as part of the Final year of a graduate, more like inputting all your suggestions as part of the final year of all University graduates to be fully equipped with " Hands on skills - Directions" before exiting the University

I love some of the Renewed Hope reforms so far but this one is totally unacceptable to me. This is a path to waste of scarce national resources. Instead of these reforms for the NYSC, I want to propose the followings:

a) Optional Apprenticeship: Since NYSC is a paid program by the government, it can be structured to a full time training program that allows individual graduate to learn a specific trade or profession. It combines hands-on work experience alongside industry professionals with dedicated study or classroom instruction, typically leading to a recognized qualification.

Everyone knows that we have shortages of qualified professionals in the country. And the so called collar jobs are no where to be found. Our energetic, brilliant and versatile Nigerian youths can easily become Managing Director of their different businesses and within shortest period of time employ more jobless youths. We have so many sectors that lack specialist professionals now. Sectors like iron fabrication and smelting, car repairs, injector mechanics, aircon and refrigeration, Abattoir worker, Accident repair technician, Advanced and creative hair professional, baker, beauty therapist, furniture CNC technician etc.

b) The federal government can then register their businesses free for them thereby bringing them into the tax net. Support them with right tools and low interest start up finance. This is how to grow a society. Is six weeks enough to train a professional? This reform is a total waste.

My contribution is endless but we need to stop wasting our scarce resources in this country. Our youths need our support. Many are drug users today because of lack of opportunity. Many are hook-ups today because no one cares.

Sounds good on paper, if they can implement it holistically as detailed, its a good restructuring of the NYSC program, well done.


But another thing they should have considered is corps members' security.

Let corps members be deployed to states within their geopolitical zone or within the states in the geopolitical zone they have their permanent home address, this will reduce risk for them.

The military discipline I learnt in my NYSC days , still helps me till date . Removing military drills from the program is a worthless move

Odiegwu. Na so them be tell us say we fit appy and get access to loan of up to N10m during my service year(2016). Till now nothing come out. This one now na corps agric,corps medical, etc. Just total up the alawee of every graduate in Nigeria and send it to their approved bank account so they can start up something instead of this long thing

Career mapping? After 4 years in school? So a person studies a course for 4years with no future goal?

As in, you really take the pains to go online, design a poster, make AI images, etc. all because you want someone to mention you and start a conversation. Dude, it's not easy.

This scheme is a conduit for waste abeg. They can fine tune it but it will eventually die naturally as we gradually journey towards resources control. Nothing is wrong if Nigeria folds it and channel same funds into tertiary education so Nigeria can produce more skills oriented graduates. What really is in NYSC that you think am opposing it?
NYSC to me is like peoples Bank and co.
I participated in the scheme decades ago when allawee was hundreds++ and could purchase good life and Nigeria wss much safer. The so-called reformist should first think of creating an enabling environment for the private sector to create durable jobs tied to our comparative advantage - Agriculture. So graduates can apply skills learnt in school especially after NYSC. Graduates do not attend school just so they can serve.

If they get the private sector involved in the specialized stream training it wont be boring, instead of all those NGO workers.

The best people to prepare them for the workforce are the companies that know the skills they need to have.
