Nigeria Moves to Protect Investments Abandoned by Returning Citizens From South by BureauJournal(op): 6:48pm On Jun 30
By Queen Madaki

The Federal Government has begun documenting businesses and other assets abandoned by Nigerians returning from South Africa under its voluntary evacuation programme, as authorities prepare to seek compensation for affected citizens amid rising anti-immigration tensions.

The Bureau Journal reports that the move follows the evacuation of hundreds of Nigerians who opted to leave South Africa over fears that ongoing nationwide anti-immigration protests could disrupt businesses or escalate into xenophobic violence.

Nigeria Begins Documentation of Abandoned Assets

Speaking in an interview with Channels Television, Nigeria's Acting High Commissioner to South Africa, Alexander Ajayi, said the government's response extends beyond evacuating citizens to protecting their investments.

According to him, Nigerians returning home have been directed to compile detailed records of businesses, vehicles, shops and other movable and immovable assets left behind in South Africa.

"I have asked them before they left yesterday to document very accurately those things they were leaving behind in terms of businesses, in terms of even cars, movable and immovable properties," Ajayi said.

He explained that the documentation would provide evidence of investments made by affected Nigerians and could form the basis for future compensation claims.

Diplomatic Engagement Underway

Ajayi disclosed that discussions had already begun with South African authorities, including the country's Deputy Minister of Finance, regarding the fate of assets belonging to Nigerian nationals.

Although the Federal Government has not announced the legal framework through which compensation would be pursued, the development suggests Abuja is preparing to raise the matter through diplomatic channels with the South African government.

Evacuation Follows Anti-Immigration Protests

The government's intervention comes as nationwide anti-immigration demonstrations organised by the self-styled "March and March" movement continue across South Africa.

The protests, which began on June 30, have heightened concerns among foreign nationals after organisers called for the deportation of undocumented migrants, raising fears of possible xenophobic attacks.

According to Ajayi, many Nigerians residing legally in South Africa voluntarily joined the evacuation programme because of concerns that the protests could negatively affect their businesses and personal safety.

335 Nigerians Evacuated

The Federal Government has so far evacuated 335 Nigerians under its voluntary repatriation programme.

Ajayi also referenced government estimates suggesting that about 500,000 Nigerians living in South Africa are undocumented, although the figure has not been independently verified.

International Community Monitoring Situation

The demonstrations have also attracted international attention.

The United States Mission to South Africa temporarily reduced operations at its diplomatic facilities in Cape Town, Durban, Johannesburg and Pretoria, citing security concerns linked to the protests.

Meanwhile, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has appealed for peaceful demonstrations and warned against acts of vigilantism.

Compensation Process Yet to Be Defined

It remains unclear whether South Africa will accept responsibility for privately owned assets abandoned by Nigerians during the evacuation.

However, the Federal Government's decision to document the losses signals its intention to pursue diplomatic engagement aimed at protecting the economic interests of affected citizens.

As Nigeria News Today continues to monitor developments, The Bureau Journal understands that discussions between Nigerian and South African authorities are expected to continue as both countries seek a peaceful resolution to the concerns arising from the protests.

The Bureau Journal will provide updates as more information emerges on the evacuation programme and any compensation arrangements.

If ECOWAS and African Union were anything useful. The South African government should actually be made to pay at current market value, every penny the foreigners have been made to abandon.
Re: Nigeria Moves to Protect Investments Abandoned by Returning Citizens From South by ekineme: 6:57pm On Jun 30
MTN and DSTV as part of their social responsibility should shoulder the cost, they can deduct it from the tax they are remitting to SA govt.

I dont know if what I wrote is right. But the Afrophobia (hatred) from black south African to their fellow African calls for a tougher retaliatory gesture.

I think the consequences of their actions is etched into the mind of africans, no one would forget. Cause at the back of every african mind, when they see a south african they know not to trust or be close with cause this person hates me. The stigma would be brutal.

The South African govt does not owe you anything.. the South African citizen made it clear they do not want illegal migrant in their country, it is not the SA government that chased illegal migrant.

A govt can not disobey it citizen else it be ousted.

Where is the tribalistic Abike Dabiri-Kerewa in all of these?

Who is going to sanction them? You? What would SA be sanctioned for? For telling ILLEGAL immigrants to leave? Or protecting their country from bandits and criminals?

Why has SA not been sanctioned already? Why?

And luckily, they are easily identifiable.

Canada dumped them out of the World Cup.
Ireland deported 29 South Africans, last week.

Other Countries are considering tougher Action against them too.
African Leaders must table their matter at the AFRICAN UNION MEETING and Sanctions should be issued against South Africa.
Ban all their Exports, Sanction their Companies all over Africa.
Drag their President before the United nations, for not upholding UN Charters.
Pressure the US to sanction them (I am sure trump will be too happy to do so).

Isolate them the way the Apartheid Government was isolated,
Boycott whatever they Host. Boycott their Products, their Artists, Events, etc
The Punishment must be TOTAL, to send a strong message that Africa will not tolerate such beastly behaviors.

So the nigerian population in SA is up to 500k? That's the entire population of small african countries like cape verde and sao tome and principe, south africans really supposed to be scared with such a huge population of nigerians in their country but should have found a more civilised way to go about it instead of looting the shops of innocent law abiding nigerians I honestly don't even think the south african govt will agree to pay any compensation to any nigerian that lost their properties to these protests if they do their huge xenophobic population will definitely vote them out of govt.
Re: Nigeria Moves to Protect Investments Abandoned by Returning Citizens From South by WorkTheTalk(m): 7:45am On Jul 01
That is a good move. While waiting for compensation from SA government, Nigeria should help the returnees with resettlement packages.

It's funny you are saying illegal migrants. It's like you haven't been watching the videos the south African vagabonds are making telling people with legal documents that they don't care about the documents. That they should go back to their country and establish the business.

It's not about illegal migrants man, it's pure hatred.

STFU! angry
It is Tribalists like you who cause division among Nigerians, that give liver to outsiders to rubbish the same people you think you are siding with.

Even if you hate Abike because of her Tribe, commonsense should tell you that this is not the time to espouse divisions among Nigerians, whether Igbo or Yoruba.
What we need right now, is a united Front against a common Enemy (South Africa), because there are Yorubas and Igbos among the Nigerians being assaulted by South Africans.
When we are done with the common Enemy, you can then come back and continue your usual Tribal rantings.

Nigerians are easily identified too grin and what are you going to do if you identify a south african? Attack him or her? Dey play! All these you mentioned against SA for what? For telling illegal immigrants and criminals who are destroying their country to leave? cheesy there are many nigerians who still live in SA this morning and nothing happened to them and oh! Canada are deporting nigerians, pakistanis and indians too..

Maybe nigerians should come together and we fix our country, hold our leaders accountable, vote in the right people, fix the tribalism in our country. SAns did the right thing for their country at least they are united in what they did. Unlike we nigerians.

It is more than hatred.
It is a bunch of lazy drunkards wanting to reap where they have not sowed.
They simply want to usurp the thriving Business of Foreigners, whether Legal or Illegal.
Business that they dont have the sense and capacity to run and will liquidate within a few Weeks.

Most good things and Business in South Africa are owned by the White South Africans, their black counterparts are into crime, Drugs and very lazy

Exactly the point. I hate the fact that they are now trying to claim that they are only chasing illegal migrants away which is false.

Let it be on record that they are chasing away both legal and illegal migrants for posterity.

There is no need crying and wailing let's fix our country, fix the corruption, tribalisms, bad governance, insecurities, terrorisms, hold our leaders to accountable and vote in the right people who would not loot our resources.

Maybe in the end south africans would want to migrate to nigeria. Let's stop running away from our country south africa is not better than nigeria.

Maybe you dont have a TV otherwise, you would have watched these Animals telling Legal and Fully Documented Immigrant Business owners that: We dont care that you are here legally, we just want your Business to be handed over to us.

I do not disagree about the need to fix Nigeria but you can be crying, and still be seeing at the same time.
Just because we need to fix Nigeria, does not mean we should keep quiet and let others who have benefitted from the generosity of the same Nigerians in the past, treat them inhumanely.

Again, I agree that we need to come together to fix Nigeria, and we will fix Nigeria, hoping you are not even one of those People who support "bad Leadership and clueless governance in Nigeria.
