Anyone who knows Benue politics knows that what's happening is the handwork of Akume. His loyalists are being sneaked in through the back even when it is obvious they lost primaries. That said, what was Suswam thinking? Akume remembers the humiliation Suswam dealt him years ago and was never going to allow it slide. |

Dogalmighty17:A new round of hostilities just got opened between some of the governors in the Hope Uzodinma camp vs the APC National, Wike and other APC governors in the Mbah camp. It's just that the present crop of governors lack the cajones. They have sold their power and self respect to Tinubu. Internal democracy in the APC is just whatever Baba sopé. That's how nations fail. |

This is yet another example of why many Nigerians believe President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration poses a serious threat to Nigeria's democracy. The greatest danger to any democratic nation is when those in power interfere with the people's right to freely choose their leaders. Elections should reflect the will of the people, not the interests of a few politically connected individuals. The recent developments in Benue State are deeply troubling. From my perspective, the reported replacement of individuals considered loyal to Governor Hyacinth Alia with persons perceived to be loyal to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, appears to have been driven more by political influence than by the interests of the people of Benue. Senator Akume has occupied several high-profile positions, including Governor of Benue State, Senator, Minister, and now Secretary to the Government of the Federation. Despite this long political career, many people believe he no longer enjoys the broad grassroots support that Governor Alia currently commands. Governor Alia was overwhelmingly elected by the people of Benue because they desired a departure from the old political establishment. Many citizens believe he has attempted to prioritize governance over political patronage and has been reluctant to distribute state resources for the benefit of entrenched political interests. If this is now being met with efforts to weaken his political influence or reshape electoral structures in favor of established politicians, then it raises serious concerns about the future of democracy in Benue State. and Nigeria at large A similar concern has been expressed regarding Rivers State. President Tinubu's intervention in the prolonged political crisis has been widely criticized by many Nigerians who believe it has strengthened the influence of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, over the affairs of Rivers State. Many supporters of Governor Siminalayi Fubara argue that he enjoys greater grassroots support within the state and should be allowed to govern without undue political interference. Whether one supports Wike or Fubara, the principle remains the same: the people, not political power brokers, should determine the direction of their state. What makes these developments particularly disappointing is that they contrast sharply with the approach taken under former President Muhammadu Buhari. There is no doubt that Buhari's administration faced significant criticism. Many Nigerians remember the severe economic hardship, rising insecurity, persistent inflation, foreign exchange instability, prolonged ASUU strikes, increasing unemployment, and declining living standards that characterized much of his tenure. These failures attracted widespread criticism both within Nigeria and internationally. However, despite those shortcomings, Buhari generally refrained from overtly interfering with electoral outcomes where his personal political interests were not directly at stake. Nigeria witnessed several opposition victories during his presidency that demonstrated a greater respect for the independence of the electoral process. For example, in the 2020 Edo State governorship election, Governor Godwin Obaseki, who had defected to the People's Democratic Party (PDP), defeated the candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Despite intense political pressure, President Buhari did not manipulate the electoral process to prevent Obaseki's victory. The outcome was largely accepted as reflecting the will of Edo voters agaist the interest of Adfams Oshiomole's candidate. Similarly, in the 2022 Osun State governorship election, Governor Ademola Adeleke of the PDP defeated the incumbent APC administration. Again, despite the ruling party losing an important state, Buhari's administration did not overturn or obstruct the electoral outcome. The people voted, and their decision stood. In a similar manner, President Tinubu enjoyed this democracy when his successor refused to interfere with the Presidential Primaries over the own preferred candidate which I believe was Vice President Osinbajo. These examples demonstrate that while Buhari's government had many shortcomings, there remained instances where democratic institutions were allowed to function without obvious executive interference. That respect for electoral outcomes is a fundamental pillar of democracy. President Tinubu should remember that democracy is not strengthened by controlling political structures or influencing electoral outcomes. It is strengthened by allowing the people to freely choose their leaders, regardless of who wins. Political victories obtained through manipulation rarely earn legitimacy, while leaders who emerge through credible elections command genuine public confidence. My advice to President Tinubu is simple: allow Nigeria's democracy to thrive naturally. Resist the temptation to influence elections or state political structures for short-term political advantage. History ultimately judges leaders not only by the offices they held but by the institutions they strengthened. The greatest legacy any president can leave is a democratic system where every Nigerian believes that their vote truly counts and that the will of the people remains supreme. |

Bluna:How can Tinubu struggle in ondo when they gave him his highest margin in 2023? I don't like the replacement in central, Taiwo Fasoranti should have been left there in honour of his dad Reuben. It is also a compensation for losing out on deputy governor ticket. Once the governorship moves to central, he will get it. Ipinsagba and Adegbonmire aren't poput |
