One of the funniest things about Obidient politics is how quickly identity becomes negotiable once you stop clapping for Peter Obi. Kenneth Okonkwo was Igbo enough when he was defending Obi on television. He was Igbo enough when he was a Labour Party spokesman. He was Igbo enough when he was attacking APC, defending the Obidient movement, and marketing Obi as Nigeria’s political redeemer. But the moment Kenneth Okonkwo parted ways with Peter Obi and Labour, some people suddenly opened an emergency ethnic verification office. All of a sudden, the same Kenneth Okonkwo they once hailed as a proud Igbo voice became a subject of forensic village investigation. “Is he really Igbo?” “Look at his face.” “Check his lips.” “Maybe he should ask his mother about one Yoruba man called Samuel Onitiri.” This is where politics removed its shoes and entered full comedy. Kenneth Okonkwo was born in Nsukka, Enugu State. His surname, Okonkwo, is not exactly Swedish. It is one of the most recognisable Igbo names in Nigeria. The man became a Nollywood legend through Living in Bondage, a film deeply rooted in Igbo culture, language and identity. But because he no longer sings from the Obidient hymn book, some people now want DNA test, village clearance, ancestral affidavit, maternal cross-examination and probably a letter from his great-grandfather’s age grade. Then came the Samuel Onitiri episode — the kind of gossip that makes common sense pack its bags and relocate. Suddenly, old photos were dragged out, facial features were being audited, and social media became a laboratory for tribal guesswork. No document. No evidence. No credible proof. Just vibes, anger and political heartbreak. That is the tragedy of fanatical politics. When you agree with them, you are a son of the soil. When you disagree with them, they start searching your family tree with a torchlight. Imagine that: a man’s political disagreement with Peter Obi is now being measured by the geometry of his lips. That is not politics. That is ethnic witchcraft wearing social-media clothes. This is the same pattern we have seen repeatedly. If a Yoruba man supports Obi, he is “detribalised.” If a Yoruba man supports Tinubu, he is “tribalistic.” If an Igbo man supports Obi, he is a patriot. If an Igbo man questions Obi, he is no longer Igbo enough. That is not principle. That is identity laundering. Kenneth Okonkwo may be politically restless. He may be inconsistent. He may deserve criticism for moving from platform to platform. But questioning whether he is Igbo because he no longer supports Obi says more about the accusers than about him. In Obidient theology, Igbo identity is apparently not inherited. It is renewable annually, subject to loyalty to Peter Obi. Once you leave the altar, your village membership expires. And if they cannot defeat your argument, they will start measuring your lips. |

DomPerignon:Honestly, the dangerous identity-policing inside the Obidient movement needs to be exposed. Once you agree with them, you are a patriot. Once you disagree, your tribe, surname, mother, lips, village and ancestry suddenly become public property for political autopsy. That is why non-Igbo supporters who think they are immune should pay attention. Ask Doyin Okupe. He was not a stranger to the movement. He was the pioneer Director-General of Peter Obi’s 2023 presidential campaign before Akin Osuntokun later replaced him. After he broke ranks and began taking positions they disliked, many of the same people who once defended him turned on him. So people like Rufai Oseni, Obasanjo and other non-Igbo sympathisers should understand the pattern. Today, they are praised because they are useful. Tomorrow, if they challenge the altar, the same mob will give them the Doyin Okupe treatment. That is the danger of fanatical politics. It does not reward principle. It rewards loyalty. And once loyalty breaks, the mob does not debate you. It profiles you. |

PDPdestroyer:Even their merit argument is rubbish given how Obi as governor was considered the worst of the worst when he was in office. Many of those Obidients here today like Mrvitalis, kobojunkie and co were all in agreement way back in 2012 that obi was a monumental failure as governor. How and when Obi changed their minds about his leadership and adminstrative skills given that obi has been out of public service since he left Anambra govt house only them can explain. |

CharlesCNG:That's why Obi should never near power because it his mob that he refused to condemn their excesses that will be carrying out purges and killings on anyone who critisizes his govt. This is how the same obidient mob deified Kanu and supported all his rubbish to the point of killing their own in the name of Biafra rubbish. These people should never be allowed any where near power. |

SeverusSnape:How To Spot An Obidient On Nairaland: A User Guide. Not everyone who criticises Tinubu is an Obidient. Not everyone who disagrees with Pastor Adeboye is an Obidient. Not everyone who supports opposition politics is an Obidient. But there is a pattern. If it quacks like an Obidient, insults like an Obidient, dodges facts like an Obidient, and shouts “data boy” like an Obidient, forgive me for recognising the duck. You can usually spot them by the familiar feathers. First, they rarely answer the issue. If you raise facts, they attack your motive. If you ask for evidence, they say you are paid. If you question Peter Obi, they say you are working for APC. If you defend a point they dislike, they call you “data boy.” Second, they confuse abuse with intelligence. Instead of argument, you get insults. Instead of data, you get slogans. Instead of reasoning, you get “fake certificate,” “snatch and grab,” “criminal,” and other recycled chants. Third, they practice selective outrage. When a pastor, activist or elder appears to support Obi, he is a voice of conscience. But if the same type of public figure says something that does not serve their political anger, he becomes tribal, fake, compromised or useless. Fourth, they dodge facts like rain. Present figures, they change topic. Present history, they shout propaganda. Present voting patterns, they reply with emotion. So no, I do not call people Obidient simply because they disagree with me. I notice the uniform: abuse first, evidence last. If it walks like selective outrage, quacks like political intolerance, and swims comfortably in insult, I do not need DNA test to know the species. You can deny being Obidient, but if your argument came from the usual insult factory, do not blame me for identifying the manufacturer. |

DomPerignon:I agree with this point, especially on the so-called “merit” argument. The Obidient claim is that Obi must be supported purely on competence and merit. Fair enough. But if merit is truly the standard, then Obi’s record as governor must also be subjected to the same scrutiny. You cannot shout “Go and verify” when it favours him, then shout “stop attacking Obi” when people actually verify. The interesting thing is that before Obi became the emergency messiah of 2023, many people who later became Obidient voices were not always impressed with his governorship record. As far back as 2012, Nairaland had threads asking: **“What exactly is Peter Obi doing in Anambra State?”** In that discussion, even those trying to defend him admitted that Anambra’s governance fortunes had dwindled in his second term, while others described him as a monumental failure. There were also older Nairaland discussions like **“Mr Peter Obi Has Failed,”** where users argued that his achievements were not phenomenal compared with Chris Ngige and questioned his planning and delivery. So the question is legitimate: when exactly did Obi become the gold standard of leadership? He left Anambra Government House in 2014. Since then, he has not governed another state, managed a federal ministry, led a national security institution, or run a complex federal economic programme. So what new administrative evidence changed the minds of those who once saw him as underwhelming? If the answer is merely 2023 emotions, Muslim-Muslim ticket anger, anti-APC frustration and social media packaging, then let us be honest and say so. Merit is not a slogan. Merit requires record, scrutiny and consistency. And Obi’s record should not become sacred simply because his followers discovered him late. |
| Re: Is Kenneth Okonkwo Igbo? How Obidients Redefine Tribe Once You Quit Their Altar. by CharlesCNG(op): 4:53am On Jul 02 |
doncartel:Precisely my point. When exactly did you people start this “investigation”? Was Kenneth Okonkwo’s origin a problem when he was speaking for Obi? Was his name under investigation when he was defending Labour Party on national television? Did anybody ask for DNA when he was attacking APC and marketing Obi as the face of a new Nigeria? No. The “investigation” only began after he stopped singing from the Obidient hymn book. That is the wickedness of cult-like politics. Once you are useful to the movement, you are pure. Once you disagree, they will investigate your village, your father, your mother, your lips, your surname, your childhood, your ancestry and even the shape of your mouth. This is not politics. This is excommunication. You people are not angry that Kenneth Okonkwo may be inconsistent. That would be a fair political criticism. You are angry that he left the altar. So instead of rebutting him, you are trying to unmake him. Today, he is no longer Igbo. Tomorrow, he will no longer be Christian. Next week, maybe he never acted in *Living in Bondage*. That is how ridiculous this thing has become. A normal political movement criticises defectors. A cult questions their identity. So thank you for confirming the point: in Obidient theology, Igbo identity is not inherited. It is conditional. Once you stop supporting Obi, your village membership expires. |

Dalohad:My brother, you are deflecting. If you want to argue that some Yoruba political actors have also questioned people’s lineage or used ethnic propaganda, go and open that thread and make the case. I may even agree with you where the facts support it. But that cannot be your defence here. The only real defence available to you is to show that what I said about some Obidients is false. If my claim is wrong, rebut it. Show that Obidients do not question people’s tribe once they leave Obi. Show that Kenneth Okonkwo was not suddenly being “investigated” only after he parted ways with Obi. Show that Igbo politicians who support Tinubu are not often called sell-outs or traitors. But saying “Yorubas do it too” is not a rebuttal. It is whataboutism. Are you saying because some Yoruba people have done it before, it is now right for Obidients to do it? Is that the moral standard now — copy the bad thing you claim to condemn? I am Yoruba, and I do not support that nonsense. In fact, it may shock you that many of my closest childhood friends were Igbo. That is partly why I can recognise the difference between ordinary Igbo political opinion and the Obidient intolerance I am talking about. This is not about hating Igbo people. It is about criticising a political movement that turns disagreement into ethnic excommunication. So please, stop hiding behind Yoruba examples. If the Obidient behaviour is wrong, condemn it. If it is right, defend it openly. But do not tell us it is wrong when Yoruba people do it and suddenly acceptable when Obidients copy it. |
