Yes, you are right, but this is kind of something thousands of Nigerian students have been doing for decades. Infact, he is not the first Nigerian student to go to China nor is he the last. Nigerians have been studying in China for decades, and to study in China you must have high level knowledge of Chinese.

Hell, it's kind of expected. It's even mundane self. And it is not only china...many other countries self.

As an example one newspaper collumnist who writes for the daily trust once had an opportunity to study for a PhD in France. It took him five years, one year to learn French, another 4 years to do the phd. And yes, the PHD theisis was written in French.

Even one of my relatives who went to a European university that advertised itself as 'we teach in English' (very true actually), still had to learn the everyday language, because he still had to buy food, etc etc.

You can ask your senator to change the laws of our country to ensure that universities in Nigeria teach in the language of their area of domicile

Which is going to in some instances create a lot of issues...

1. The language may need to undergo some modernization (even the written form of our three major languages has not been revised since the 1930's). That takes time

2. Ok, how do you get lecturers fluent in the language of the area where the university is domiciled? Especially if na small tribe.

3. What language do you use? In some areas like Gombe and Adamawa and the FCT and even parts of Kaduna state that have multiplicity of tribes nko? University of Abuja is located in an area where there are three or four native languages spoken.

4. Are you ready to pay for students to spend one to two years learning the language where the univertsity is domiciled...especially since there may not be enough students.

5. And even if you just want the student to deliver a speech in his language at graduation ceremony, how do you accomodate hundreds of students that do not speak the same language

6. Even the China that you are jumping up and down about, has several minority languages, and then there is Cantonese. How far?

Go to Kebbi State, Plateau state, Cross Rivers and Akwa Ibom. They are remote ancestors of the Chinese.

Even their names like Nanching, Nandong, Taichung, Nanfwang, etc, are very common in Plateau state and the Middle Belt among the Birom people, Mwaghavul people, Tiv people etc... They call those ethnic groups 'Chongai', and they even have Chinese looks, like slanty eyes, etc.

It's very hard for Europeans to learn Mandarin because it's a tonal language.

I've been learning mandarin but still stuck in the basics, baby step's yet but I do practice with some of my eastern brothers for trade fair that have been there
