You absolutely correct in your assertions. For me to expect an incompetent government like APC to develop anything meaningful is crazy.

Even the Coastal road project is a farce.

By the way, I was simply explaining why Lagos is congested. Perhaps if we indeed want Lagos decongested, we can start by asking an incompetent APC government to improve port facilities in other regions.

Thank you
You are playing a game of draught with the truth. grin

The main limitation is inconsistent water levels and siltation on the River Niger, requiring regular dredging for reliable year-round access.

The concessionaire has stated the port infrastructure is ready, but without sustained dredging it remains a “seasonal stopgap” rather than a full multimodal hub.

This shows the Federal Government (via NPA concessions) have tried, but maintaining navigability on major rivers is expensive and technically demanding.

Ports are among the most capital-intensive infrastructure projects. They need constant dredging(billions of Naira monthly), quay walls, handling equipment, terminals, access channels, and environmental safeguards.

Attracting private investment (PPP models) requires strong feasibility studies, clear ROI projections, and de-risked environments. Many proposals to have an Inland Port in the SE stall at the study/approval stage because full funding and technical partnerships are hard to secure without proven cargo volumes and supporting infrastructure.

To cut the long story short, a fully-functional SE port is NOT feasible.

I can bet you that he knows that already, but he would not agree with you.
Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by izzou(m): 5:58pm On Jul 02
There are better things to negotiate for, than to be asking for every single project to be replicated everywhere.

The SE probably has the highest number of traders, but the region is not the highest consumer of goods...Lagos remains the highest, not because of its population alone, but the access to more than 5 countries.

So if an Igbo man imports a Container load of shocks at Onitsha port, you are suggesting he takes it by road back to Lagos to go and sell it?

Which existing port is in the SE?

The way you guys throw this dredging thing around is funny. The money that will be used to dredge River Niger to accommodate cargo ships will build more than 5 seaports from scratch. It is possible, but it cannot be funded. That is why the SE port will always be a story

Ibeto, an Nnewi man ran to Port Harcourt to build a port. What does that tell you?

Nigeria imports raw materials. Most Flour mills are located at Apapa, because Wheat is imported even up till tomorrow. I did my IT at the then Dangote Flour, so I know what Raw wheat looks and smells like. Many of the companies in Ogun state and Oyo have their raw materials shipped from Apapa
Ok. SE can't get a port. But there is a port in PH and Onne.

So why is Lagos congested as everyone is going there for importation? Why aren't the Onitsha and Aba importers using PH and Onne?

This long Grammer is too much for the person you are addressing

Just say apc is not competent enough to continuosly dredge a river to service a port that has less business viability than all the airports scattered around the SE

What is the volume of goods going to Aba and Onitsha from China? That's the first question you should ask yourself

Are you telling me Onitsha and Aba importers can fill up a 1000 container vessels at a go?

These things are beyond having a port in every LGA. Do you have the required number to convince a Shipping vessel to berth there? Or you want a vessel to berth in PH because of 20 or 30 containers?

FYI, Vessels berth in PH. Oil companies, and companies around there use it. Ibeto is still in business and expanding

He is assuming that the large number of importers from the SE, automatically means a large SE market.

Everybody comes to Lagos to buy. If you take your business to Enugu, another person will take your place in Lagos and sell.

You just created an opportunity for your competitor to expand
The truth is that the people with money, who can buy these goods are mainly in Lagos. Many of the hinterland are civil service states that cant afford much of these imported goods. Cash/Carry, shoprites in many places Outside Lagos, Abuja, PH are just to take pictures buy akara gala and bottled water

The number of cars in Lagos road alone daily might be what the entire SW or SE have in a week. Same with number of cars purchased

Beyond the rich clientele, Lagos is a market for West Africa.

Go to Tradefair and see people buying thousands of Malt and Coke to sell in Accra, Abidjan, and other countries.

Building a seaport in every street will not change anything

The federal government granted a waiver to the controversial Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council (PFIPC) to recruit 300 members of staff in August 2025, TheCable can report.

Mimi Abu, director, organisation design and development, in the office of the head of the civil service of the federation, conveyed the government’s approval for recruitment in a letter dated August 7, 2025.

The waiver was necessary because of the federal government’s embargo on general civil service recruitment.

In the two-page letter conveying the waiver, which was copied to the office of the secretary to the government of the federation, Abu said the PFIPC had been approved to recruit 10 directors on grade level (GL) 17 and 20 assistant directors on GL15.

There was also approval for the recruitment of 44 administrative officers, with 20 on GL08, 15 on GL09, four on GL12 and five on GL14.

45 planning officers
Six statisticians
32 commercial officers
22 investment promotion officers
26 accountants
10 legal officers
13 procurement officers
11 programme analysts
12 information officers
Nine executive officers (accounts)
Nine executive officers (GD)
Five data processing officers
Three confidential secretaries
Six technical officers (elect/mech/civil)
Seven data processing assistants
10 motor drivers/mechanics

“This approval is based on and limited to the 2025 Approved Establishment position of the Agency, which covers the proposed recruitment,” Abu wrote in the letter.

“You are please advised to: (a) obtain the clearance of the Budget Office of the Federation in line with the provisions of the extant circular issued by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation before the recruitment; (b) adhere to extant rules including the Federal Character principle while filling the vacancies; and (c) ensure that 5% of the recruitment is allocated to persons living with disabilities.

“Kindly note that: (a) on no account should the approval be varied or exceeded, in order not to increase the personnel costs unduly; (b) the officials of this office are required to be present during the exercise to ensure compliance with the waiver; and (c) the list of candidates who are successful in the engagement exercise should be forwarded to this Office for record purposes.

“Please accept the warm regards of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation.”

Twenty-four hours after the letter’s issuance, Adeniyi Adeyemi, the director-general of PFIPC, published a note of appreciation on social media, thanking President Bola Tinubu for granting the waiver.

“Mr. President, we are growing because you believe in us,” the message reads in part.

Adeyemi also indicated that the agency had secured approval for “the establishment of PFIPC offices in all the 36 states of the federation” and “the rollout of 127 global offices across the world”.

“The visionary support strengthens our resolve to champion Nigerian enterprise and attract foreign direct investments across every border,” he said.

The yearly budgetary allocation to the office of Chief of Staff to the President was under ₦600m before Tinubu Govt, Gbada's office got a whooopng ₦21bn as budgetary allocation in 2024. Tinubu and him cronies will loot Naija dry before leaving office in 2031 (if the incoming rubber stamped National Assembly did not amend the constitution to allow him remain in office).

Chief, you are also mixing things up, you made strong points earlier, but this point up there is myopic.

For instance, nobody enjoys paying millions for container trucking, sleeping at Apapa port, or dealing with task force and highway extortion and various risk involved,if they can just clear their market closer to home.

Secondly, who says you must close your shop in Lagos just to move to the East or wherever ? A serious businessman will keep his presence in Lagos and still open another regional branch. If you can clear goods directly into a wearhouse near Aba or Onitsha for example, your landing cost will drop drastically. You will easily beat the price of anyone bringing their own load all the way from Lagos.Demand follows infrastructure. Lagos isn't a monopoly because it's magical,it's a monopoly because it's the only one currently functioning plus years of evolution involved in the structuring. The moment a working alternative opens up, the whole Southeast, South-South, and even parts of the North will pivot immediately.

Your other point stands, dredging is a limiter.
