Ali Khamenei’s funeral procession across Iran and Iraq

From July 3, millions are expected to join seven days of funeral processions for Iran’s former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, who was killed in a US-Israeli attack on February 28.

Official rites and ceremonies will take place from Tehran to Qom, and Najaf and Karbala in Iraq, ending with his burial on July 9 at the Imam Reza shrine in Mashhad.

‘We will avenge’
“Victims’ families, especially those victims’ families of those who were killed during the war, and also those who were killed in the 12-day war in June last year, attended a farewell ceremony last night,” Abdelwahed reported.

Security across the capital has been raised to maximum alert.

Among those overseeing the arrangements is General Ahmad Vahidi, the recently appointed commander-in-chief of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), who on Friday made his first public appearance since February 8, sitting beside Khamenei’s coffin.

Vahidi, who assumed the role after his predecessor Mohammad Pakpour was killed in US-Israeli strikes on the first day of the war, has not been seen in public for months. He was previously head of the elite Quds Force.

Meanwhile, on the sidelines of the funerals in Tehran, Major-General Amir Hatami, the commander-in-chief of Iran’s armed forces, pledged revenge against the US and Israel for killing the former supreme leader.

“With a firmer resolve we declare to the enemies of the Iranian nation – America and the criminal Zionist regime – that we will avenge the blood of the martyred leader [Khamenei],” Hatami said on Friday.

Public viewing is scheduled to begin on Saturday morning, with authorities preparing to manage crowds amid a regional heatwave.

The funeral procession will continue through Tehran and Qom before moving briefly into Iraq on July 8. Final burial ceremonies are scheduled for July 9 at the Imam Ali Reza Shrine in Mashhad.

Caskets displayed in Tehran

Khamenei's flag-draped coffin sat at Tehran's Grand Mosalla alongside family members killed in the Israeli airstrike that came in the first moments of the war on Feb. 28.

The dead being honored include a son-in-law, his eldest daughter, a 14-month-old granddaughter and the wife of Iran's new Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of the previous leader who remains in hiding after reportedly being wounded in the attack.

Religious leaders and foreign dignitaries walked up to Khamenei’s casket as a military band played or a man sang prayers. Iran's Parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and President Masoud Pezeshkian, key leaders in the country's civilian government, all paid their respects.

Video published by Iranian state media showed an earlier mourning ceremony Thursday night for Khamenei. The black-clad mourners, whom state media identified as coming from families of those who lost loved ones in the 12-day war in 2025 and the recent Iran war, threw scarves and other items for attendants to brush against the coffin, a common practice in Iran seen as a blessing.

Later, state media showed images of Khamenei’s casket draped by a red flag with white calligraphy reading “Ya Hussein,” a Shiite expression in remembrance of the 7th-century martyrdom of the Prophet Muhammad’s grandson. It had been flying over the Imam Hussein golden-domed shrine in Karbala, Iraq. The flag also traditionally symbolizes both the spilled blood of someone unjustly killed and a call for vengeance.

War on Iran: ‘what the US and Israel did backfired’

Khamenei’s funeral procession has been intended by the Iranian government as a “display of unity” that carries a message to the US and Israel, says a Tehran-based analyst.

Following the assassination of the supreme leader, the government did not fall but became stronger, Abas Aslani, senior research fellow at the Center for Middle East Strategic Studies in Tehran, told Al Jazeera.

“Prior to the war a few months ago there were economic protests in the country and the people were protesting against the economic situation. But the attack against the country changed the dynamic and those who were protesting against the government came back to the streets, but this time not to protest but to support the political establishment,” Aslani said.

“What the US and Israel did backfired. They wanted to bring about regime change in the country, but what actually happened created a rally around the flag.”

Iran did not invite European countries to Khamenei’s funeral

According to the foreign ministry spokesperson, so far more than 50 delegations have already paid their respects to Iran’s late supreme leader.

So, the prominent figures you’re seeing: the president of Tajikistan; the president of Iraq and also the Iraqi speaker of parliament.

And then you have a delegation from Turkmenistan; the president of Georgia; the prime minister of Pakistan. Pakistan is quite important here because perhaps it was the highest-level attendance from Pakistan.

Then we have Nikol Pashinyan, the prime minister of Armenia; Dmitry Medvedev from Russia; the vice president of Turkiye and many more.

What we are seeing is that those who attended were mostly from either neutral states or friendly states.

And the Iranians are saying they did not extend invitations to European countries or those who have directly, or indirectly, supported the Israeli and American military campaign on Iran.

How else do you explain the fact that even in Islam, the strict rules only apply to the brainwashed populace and not to their sheikhs/imams/caliphs who control them? This man is literally being buried many months after his death and probably in a fancy custom-made casket at that, while the average Islamist lives by the delusion that burial must take place within 24 hours of death. grin

Iran is just stubborn and US only employed leniency. Their destruction would have been worst. I think US is being considerate of the few good ones amongst them that live in Iran and have no where to go! If not US would have leveled or humbled them like they did to Iraq who since been very quiet

Islam is a political system masquerading as a religion, so expect the same issues that are found in other religions to exist in Islam too. Religion is a system of tools with which the gullible masses are made easier to control. grin

While the brainwashed Islamist thinks they have to be buried on the same day to make their Islamic Jannah, their Islamic overlords don't really believe in or care much for all that nonsense since they know it ain't true.
