https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BlcaQASfMOw?si=7jowXSZJwTpOY3AB What would you do if you or someone close to you was bitten by a venomous snake? Would you know the right first aid to give, or could your actions make the situation even worse? Dr. Odera Nwankwo, a Pediatric Intensivist and Associate Professor of Pediatrics, has shared simple but life-saving advice on how to help a snakebite victim before they get to the hospital. He explained that some snakebites cause local symptoms, such as pain, swelling, and redness around the bite, while others allow the venom to spread throughout the body. When this happens, it can become a medical emergency and may even be fatal if treatment is delayed. According to Dr. Nwankwo, the victim should be kept calm, the affected arm or leg should be kept as still as possible, the head should be properly supported, and firm pressure may be applied over the bite area where appropriate. He stressed that the victim should be taken to the nearest hospital immediately for proper medical care. He also warned against common mistakes that many people make after a snakebite. These include trying to suck out the venom with the mouth, cutting the bite with a knife, or tying a tight tourniquet around the affected limb. He said these actions can make the injury worse instead of helping. Dr. Nwankwo urged the public to treat every suspected venomous snakebite as a medical emergency and seek professional treatment as quickly as possible. |

otrasane:Must the person be carried to the hospital? Cant the person work by themselves, if it is only you at the scene, Won't there be any effect? |

Well, this is more of your medical opinion than substantiated facts. Snake bites are not a recent thing... Before medical care got to this stage of advancement, snake bites occurred, and people still survived by doing some of these things you are condemning. Not saying he is wrong... Just don't think he is fully correct, especially when you are dealing with highly venomous bites with a severely short window of survival and medical care is far away. |

i have nothing against doctors but this practise of sucking out snake poison have been in existence since ages but the doctors came and want to change that practise because no one was coming to their door then they use fear and everyone start running to them, the practise died and the doctor made more money do doctors really care about their patient or care about the money |

Technically, snake venoms are made up of protein and cannot cause harm if swallowed. It’ll only cause harm if the person that swallowed it has a cut in his mouth or an open injury in his digestive system. |

Angelfrost:I know a woman who was bitten deep in the farm, she had to walk a long distance before she could find any form of transportation, but she had already tied the foot, and cut the bite. While medical intervention is the best, it doesn't negate the fact that traditional treatment is still very helpful. |

This guy isn't serious. The lady from Abuja been rushed from hospital to hospital ... no antidote .. died. Do hospitals have antidotes for the various snake bites? It seems as though he doesn't even understand how venom spreads . Any snake bite should be treated with urgency. Snake bite is nothing new ... hospitals are. Not saying one must not be rushed to a hospital... if it's minutes away... yes ... and hope for the best. If not... emergency methods ... and sucking out the venom or as much as possible is one ... less venom to enter the blood stream. A tourniquet... first thing... to cut off blood flow and restrict the poison from circulating. He should say what is wrong with that . The person is bitten in the foot... the person should be kept in a standing position... or foot down for the same reason... restrict blood flow and circulation. If possible... heat should be applied .. as in wrapping the affected area with a hit water rag... as hot as possible.... heat can break down the poison... making it less toxic. If the venom is the type that attacks the nervous system ... the victim really needs attention immediately... that one don't waste time. This is the little I know ... and there are others that know a whole lot more . Don't be fooled by "doctor" title ... doesn't seem like this one earned his |

Guess this doctor dont have a village or he has been living in the city all hia life and i the city you hardly see snakes But come to the village or bushy area you always see snakes and few hospitals When you get a bite you need first aid first which is to tie the leg and not allow blood to rush up to your heart or body parts Then fron there you can stay up to hours This doctor needs cash flow |

There's a book called "Where there is no doctor". That book teaches how to deal with these things on a first aid basis... Both scorpions and snakes venom are sucked out if there's no remedy yet... |

Funny, you can never suck out snake venom, once snakes bites, the venom goes straight to the blood stream which starts circulating mostly to the heart and liver. What you suck out is just blood🤣🤣🤣 |
