So a man of God in Delta State decided to walk into a shrine and destroy it to prove that the gods were false.
He probably thought nothing would happen.

Well… something happened. The matter landed in court.

According to reports, the Federal High Court sitting in Warri held that his actions violated the constitutional right of the shrine’s worshippers to freedom of religion.

The matter ended up in court.

The court held that the action was unconstitutional and violated the worshippers’ fundamental right to freedom of religion under Section 38 of the 1999 Constitution. The court also found it inconsistent with Section 10, which provides that no government shall adopt any religion as State religion.

As a result, the court ordered the pastor to:

✅ Rebuild the destroyed Egbesu shrine.
✅ Pay ₦100 million as general damages.
✅ Pay ₦100 million as exemplary damages.
✅ Pay ₦5 million as costs.
✅ Publish a public apology in two national newspapers.
✅ Stay at least 10 kilometres away from the worshippers.

You are free to preach your faith and try to convince others to join you, but you are not free to destroy another person’s place of worship because you disagree with their beliefs or because you want to prove your God is superior.

Court awards N205m to Egbesu worshippers over demolished shrine

• Says destruction violates freedom of worship

A Federal High Court sitting in Warri has awarded a total of N205 million in damages against Prophet Tamarauebi Elisha Owan and eight members of the Greatgod Holy Tabernacle over the destruction of the Osuopele Benesede Opu-Oru Temple in Ojobo, Delta State.

The court also ordered the respondents to rebuild the traditional shrine, publish public apologies in two national newspapers, and refrain from further harassment of worshippers of the Egbesu temple.

In its judgment delivered on June 29, 2026, the court held that the respondents’ actions violated Sections 10 and 38 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which guarantee freedom of religion and prohibit the adoption of a state religion.

The court declared that the harassment of the applicant and worshippers of the Osuopele Benesede Opu-Oru Temple was unconstitutional, discriminatory, and a violation of their fundamental rights. It further restrained the respondents from harassing the worshippers and ordered them to remain at least 10 kilometres away from the temple and its adherents.

The court directed the respondents to rebuild the shrine destroyed on December 20, 2024, and awarded N100 million as exemplary damages, N100 million as general damages, and N5 million as the cost of the suit.

It also ordered them to tender a public apology in two national daily newspapers.

Unless he has evidence of criminal activities at the shrine, he has no right to destroy anything there. Some Christians are worse than Boko Haram.

How is it rubbish judgement.....if you want to advocate for churches being burnt then do it on a separate slate and stop supporting and encouraging intolerance and weekedness.

Were the culprits caught? Why destroy other people's place of warship in the first place? India has over 100 religions and none bothers the other.

if he had evidence of criminal activity, the law says he should report to the police. Even when shrines are destroyed, it has to be at the request of the community and not you going on an errand nobody sent you
