Why We Are Impounding Vehicles With Tinted Glasses In Anambra — Police by IzunnaOkafor(op): 2:07pm On Jul 05
By Izunna Okafor, Awka

The Anambra State Police Command has explained the rationale behind its ongoing enforcement exercise involving the impoundment of vehicles fitted with tinted glasses, clarifying that the operation is aimed at strengthening security and not intended to harass or inconvenience law-abiding residents.

The clarification was contained in a statement issued on Sunday by the Police Public Relations Officer of the Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, amid growing public reactions over the exercise.

According to the Police Spokesman, the exercise targets all vehicles fitted with tinted glasses, including those whose owners possess tinted glass permits. The exercise, he said, also targets unregistered vehicles, as well as vehicles with concealed, covered or defaced number plates.

SP Ikenga explained that the exercise was initiated to enable the Police to verify the authenticity of tinted glass permits, detect forged or fraudulently obtained permits, enforce compliance with vehicle registration and number plate regulations, and prevent criminal elements from taking advantage of such violations to evade security checks and perpetrate crimes.

According to him, intelligence available to the Command has shown that criminals increasingly exploit tinted vehicles and improperly identified vehicles to conceal their identities and frustrate law enforcement efforts during criminal operations.

The Police spokesman acknowledged that the exercise might cause temporary inconvenience to genuine motorists, but, however, explained that the action had become necessary in view of the prevailing security situation and the Command's determination to enhance public safety across the state.

He further emphasized that the enforcement operation is not targeted at victimising any individual but is strictly a security measure designed to safeguard lives and property.

The Command appealed to residents to cooperate with security operatives and exercise patience while the verification exercise continues, assuring that officers involved had been directed to carry out their duties professionally and in accordance with the law.

The Police Spokesman also reaffirmed the Command's commitment to sustaining proactive policing and other security measures aimed at denying criminals the opportunity to operate within the state.

What crime are they talking about? Tinted vehicles don’t commit any crime and nothing stop the police from stop and search. The idea is rooted from harassment and extortion. The people committing crimes are in the forests.

Only in Anambra! Because no one would challenge them. Absolute bunkum.

So, you impound the vehicle of someone going to work or hospital or travelling; get him stranded, ruin his day or maybe life... and call it temporary inconvenience? What a country? How about booking the owner, issuing a warning or imposing a fine (assuming the action is legal. It's actually illegal to impound vehicles with tinted glass permit because you're unsure if the permit is genuine).

What sort of Police do we have in Nigeria in general and Anambra State in particular? For how long shall our people suffer the ignorance, wickedness and incompetence of a useless police force?

A factory tint is not a film applied to the glasses,it’s a shaded tint fitted INTO the glass itself !

Thesame police created a portal for obtaining and verifying tinted permits.

For those ignorant amongst us, they do this in the USA too. They will even test your tinted glasses and if it is above the state regulations, you get fined. It is very dangerous to use very tinted glasses.

Police can kill you in the USA thinking you were reaching for a gun because they cannot see inside your vehicle. My new vehicle has no tinted window in the driver window and very low at the back to prevent sun heat.

We need to have more enforcement now as elections draw near, so we do not have war in our hand due to smuggled weapons. Keep up the hardwork.

Just don't understand why people blacken out their vehicles. I can't just get my head around this.

What are you hiding from if you are an upstanding citizen. It is a first sign to me that I have to be ultra alert if I am dealing with such a person.

I personally think all permits should be voided.

People who blacken out their vehicles should put themselves in the position of security officers on the highways that face life and death decisions everyday. How can you defend yourself if you cannot immediately identify an armed threat.

Why do you have to impound every vehicle with tinted permits when officers can just login to the website and confirm if a permit is fake or not? Ae thing with the ecmrs and vehicle registration. Ecmr and autoreg sites have all this info.

They just want to make money. You'll have to pay to get your car from the station impound lot...abi is it free?

Just shut up!!!!

When it is convenient for guys, you compare with the USA. Do the American police also collect bribes from people? Are Nigerians permitted to own guns like in the USA? Do politicians or the American government give order for criminals to be released like in Nigeria?

I don't get it ... why do the Police have to be explaining? When the law was passed... didn't they explain? Why not simply shut up and enforce? Those who didn't learn for free will pay to learn. What next?... explaining why one has to stop at red light?

At times Nigeria Police never fails to amaze me with some of their actions .
A tinted glass permit has a barcode that you will scan immediately that would bring you the authencity of the document within seconds .
They are really dumb set of people and meanwhile this is their document.

I gave the reasons why it makes more sense for Nigeria Police to stop tinted vehicles. I drive in Nigeria. My car is not tinted, so you can insult me all you want. The question is, why do you need a very tinted vehicles? Who cares about you or what you do in your car...but we worry about the weapons and drugs you may be moving into our communities.

Are you sure you're OK?.

Didn't you read where the police said they are arresting both people with permits and people without permits?

How does that sound like to you?

You creatures always support any bad policy from the government, and that makes them act like thugs.

Almost all SUVs come with factory-fitted tinted glass for the rear windows.

So what do you suggest owners of such cars do?
