there is a more complete view of iranian acquisition plans of russian fighter jets

iran is getting 48 Su-35s
at least 20 have been completed
delay in deliveries is entirely due to iran not wanting to take them at this time
some facilities at the hamadan air base essential for their operation was damaged in the 40d war
so there is some recalibration by the air force
iran does operate its older air frames quite sustainably, war or no war
so this is an hiccup that'll be resolved in short order

iran is also getting 12 Su-30mks
they were initially supposed to receive jets that are currently active in the ukraine war
but there have been conflicting reports since about the condition of the delivered jets
will all of them be brand new or jets that have already seen combat or will the squadron be mixed

these 60 4th gen jets are firm orders

in addition, there is indication that iran has placed an order for 5th gen Su-57s
the Su-57 program has been plagued by many extensive delays
but production run is picking up
there is a large backlog relative to production capacity
the russian air force needs 50 more, algeria needs 12 more
so iran wouldn't be getting the first batch until 2028 at the earliest

after the 12d war

part of the delegation that'd fly with ghalibaf will follow up on this

any exports will make it the first export of a wholly-china made fourth gen jet to anyone other than pakistan
in the past, iran may have been interested in the jf-17 thunder
but i don't see pak exporting that to iran
it'll be easy for saudi arabia and the us to block that export
and the jf-17 is a significant downgrade compared to the su-35 and j-10c

btw, payment will not be issue
a squadron costs $1B inclusive of everything--training, support, armaments, and what not
the primary issue will be that china will have to deploy air force personnel and defense contractors in iran
they do this for the j-10c fleet in pakistan

it is not like this is taboo
china sold more than 500 tanks and almost three dozen fighter jets to iran during the iraq-iran war
but xi's china is different from deng's china

it is also unclear what the appetite is in china about joint arms projects with iran
they currently only do this with pakistan, russia, and clandestinely with north korea
they certainly do share expertise with iran so they can produce their own indigenous platforms
but a visible, open, overt collaboration is a step xi has been loathe to make

it'll be very exciting though if the ghalibaf trip led to a breakthrough
the new military leadership across sepah and artesh are far more open to collaborations and partnerships
than their antiquated forbears
