Mixed Signals from My Stingy and Double Standard Landlord

I’ve only seen the young man at the back of the compound once, fetching water directly from the well. Since then I’ve been wondering how they get water for their house.

Just recently, I was about to open the well to fetch water when he also brought out his buckets. But instead of coming to the well, he went straight to the tap. Then he asked me, "Don’t you like fetching water from the tap?" I was surprised. So he’s been using the tap all this while?

Here’s what I later found out. The same key that opens the well also opens the storex. So he’s been fetching water from the tap whenever I’m not around or without me knowing.

That got me thinking:
- How did he know the well key also opens the storex?
- Could the landlord have told him but not me?
- And if so, why? I don’t use any major electronic appliances, and my family spends most of the time outside the state.

When we moved in April, he asked me to pay 1k for security and 5k for light. That’s 6k in total, and I paid. He said after the first payment, subsequent ones wouldn’t be up to 6k.

In May he asked for money again but didn’t state an amount. I ended up sending 4k. In June I sent 4k as well.

By the end of June, the month wasn’t even over before he asked for light and security money again. I sent 5k on the 30th because light was stable that month. The next day he acknowledged it, thanked me, and prayed for me. Since then he’s been unusually nice, and he’s been leaving the storex open all day.

Yesterday morning he told me not to fetch from the well again, that I should use the tap because it’s now open.

Now I’m wondering what changed. Was it the extra 1k I added? If yes, why couldn’t he just tell me from the start how much he expects monthly? Is 1k really that big a deal that I can’t afford?

At this point I’m even thinking, if I pay more, maybe he’ll let us use the washing machine too.

Honestly, I don’t understand what’s going on.
