The 360k debt is not mine too
Yes it's not, and you shouldn't have to pay for it. Can they exchange for a new meter?

There were unpaid arrears on the postpaid account before the prepaid was issued. The electricity officials should have simply explained and agreed on the terms of debt repayment, which are typically 50 debit and 50 credit for each power unit purchased.
I beg to differ. My meter was installed in 2022 but there's a debt of 446+ from 2021 that I'm asked to pay on the meter and another 248k from my postpaid account.

How does one even use electricity without buying credits in the meter? This doesn't makes any sense.
It happens when the relay is faulty leading to negative reading called Loss of Revenue-LOR

Forget about accountability. If you don't use hard hand in these officials, them go use you take play.

In my own case, I visited PHCN office everyday, spending transport, burning fuel, rescheduling tasks and going strained. I did this for eight months!

You heard that right: EIGHT MONTHS!

I was so tired, angry and exhausted. I then brought out my last card: involving the law enforcement agencies.

I looked at it as abuse of power but if I had continued wasting scarce resources every week to rectify my prepaid meter, the solution will still not come.

Called my DSS friends, spent funds I shouldn't. They came and pick two officials, took them to their office, interrogated them. They came the next day to fix it.

See, some Nigerians, especially civil service workers need hard settings before they can do the right thing.
Na wetin remain for me to explore. I've paid 512k since February and no reconnection till date.

She should send her complaint to NERC and FCCPC.
They've not resolved mine since November.

You are wrong. Same thing happened to me. A new house on a virgin land, yet a prepaid meter came with almost 200,000k we managed to clear it after several failed protest letters.
The same happened to me. Ours is 700k. We are still paying.

Let me make her understand since she is not informed.

1. They were paying estimated billing before, and did not pay off the previous balance. They must have been paying N50k and using N150k lol.
2. The same account was used to open the new PrePaid Meter, and the NEPA guy used his name to help her parents from running up and down to submit this or that.
3. The Balance she is seeing there is what they have used.

If she thinks the guy used the meter, and removed it and passed it over to her, she is probably very wrong because they MAP these prepaid meters to addresses. She can also request for her usage records, so she can see where the charges came from.
You missed the point

The meter isn't her own, it belongs to someone else. She paid for a brand new meter. They duped her

Yes, if you want to buy prepaid meter, go to PHCN and do it yourselves.

Stop using a proxy or third party compromised officials.

Them do me same thing for my family house. Had to call DSS officials. Traced the official, picked him up and he confessed. I later got a new prepaid.

I know I spent money to use DSS on the guy, but I am happy I taught someone a lesson never to do shady deals with me.

Those PHCN guys are something else.
And you think you were right to do this? Our DSS don turn lap dog for our country

Do you think I was happy when I did that?

I wasn't happy, abusing power, but I just had to do the needful.

If all Nigerians were allergic to fraud the way I do, most of the corruption going on in our private and public office will be almost non existent.

My family member pack to a new apartment in United Kingdom and noticed the previous tenant left unpaid electricity debt on the prepaid meter. Whenever they recharge, they noticed their energy units finishes asap. They complaint to their electricity coy and they track the previous tenant promptly and noticed he was the one that borrowed to recharged and never paid back thereby leading to debt to the upcoming tenant. My relations were duly refunded by their energy provider.

For those that sudden debt suddenly appear on their prepaid meter in Nigeria, don't seat like a duck saying you don't have time to fix it. Go and meet the BM (Business Manager) of your district and there you will find your answers.

My prepaid meters are certified zero debt because I hate debt as a former postpaid customer. My DISCO currently send me 30 units monthly as MAP METER REFUND as instructed by NERC. Though below expectations cheesy

Pray devil doesn't push you to push debt on any of my prepaid meter because your Israelite 40 years of wilderness has just began without me fighting or cursing smiley

The same Nigeria you all complain about is what I am enjoying till Jesus takes me home.

[quote author=Rebuke post=139959439]She said the name on the meter is not her name. Obviously, there's something fishy... it's the same content every Nigerian now does that has exposed many rots going on in the country, I think that's the good side of the content.

But even if it's content, WHY NOT MAKE IT MAKE SENSE?.....N406,000 debt on a prepaid meter?🤣🤣😜

But we are saying the same thing. We had about 400k in arrears on ours. Nepa deducted 50% from every unit we bought on our prepaid meter (we were only getting half the value of the electricity we bought until the debt was cleared).

let me tell you for free, you meter has been bypassed. he is telling youto keep paying so u dont get caught. once you enter minus they will storm your house. how can they tell u that even when your unit finishes you will still have light. soon they will storm your house and fine you some serious amount in the name of bypass. they will give you a year or two first. just dey watch
Kingluqman:
She's not lying..

There was a time I had issue with my prepaid meter, it was not supplying light and there was enough units on it. So IBDEC staffs later told me the only solution is to work on it.

They did came to my house and uncoupled it, did their job and mount it on the wall again.

So the staffs that came to my house told me that I should make sure I keep recharging on it. The guy said if the unit finish, I will still have light but i will have negative balance on the meter.

So, if to sey I wicked like the former occupant of that lady's apartment now, I go just dey use light dey go without recharging, for the next occupant of my apartment to pay grin

It's just pure wickedness from either the landlord or who left the apartment 💯

Well, you may be right. I have seen similar case before and I think that kind of technical issue comes with the brand (Mojec) of my prepaid meter. They told me if I fail to recharge it, the debt will accumulate to a certain amount and they will come.

But I always make sure I recharge and check the balance of my units.

For the similar case, that meter accumulated over 350k debt before they came to disconnect their light. For my case, it won't happen but I pity the next occupant of the house because he/she might think they are on Promo grin

Mine is over ₦360,000.
Ironically, the NEPA agent in Jos who installed my meter last year, when they were going street to street replacing postpaid meters, told me the outstanding bill on it was less than ₦100,000. He said it was almost the same as buying a brand-new meter. I paid ₦30,000 and got the meter, which even came with 50 units.
Long story short, I decided to clear the bill. I asked my brother's neighbour, who works with NEPA, to check the balance for me, and that's when I realized the bill had climbed to over ₦360,000.
I contacted the installer, and he told me to pay him ₦20,000 to bypass the meter. He claimed NEPA wouldn't catch me and said many people in my area were already doing it. The penalty for being caught bypassing a meter is over ₦50,000, while a new meter costs over ₦100,000.
I'm tempted to do it, save some money for about six months.
I was charged with 450k for bypass oo... Where did u get the over 50k amount from...

Really? Do you understand MAP IDs. A meter is just a box...the account number attached to MAP determines payments and readings. If her account is mapped to the new meter, how would it have a balance unless she already had balances before. Do you know how many prepaid meters I have installed? Most people do not know they have humongous balances. She needs to ask for her account history.
