Colombia midfielder Jáminton Campaz and his family have received death threats following the national team’s elimination from the FIFA World Cup 2026.

Why Campaz Received Death Threats

Colombia’s tournament ended Tuesday in a penalty shootout loss to Switzerland in the round of 16. During extra time, Campaz — who plays for Argentine club Rosario Central — missed a critical scoring opportunity when his shot went wide.

After the match, the player’s social media accounts were flooded with negative comments and threats. He decided to limit comments on his social media and, as a precaution, did not take the return flight to his home country with his teammates.

“No athlete, nor any member of their inner circle, should be subjected to intimidation for representing their country in a sporting arena,” the federation said in a statement.

On Instagram, Campaz shared a photo of himself covering his face in frustration, alongside a plea for respect.

“Football is also made up of difficult moments,” he wrote. “My Colombia, please let us never lose sight of respect. We may think differently or feel frustration and sadness, but no passion justifies hatred or living in fear.”

Colombia Football Federation Calls For Probe
In response to the harassment, the Colombian federation has urged the country’s attorney general’s office to expedite an investigation to identify those behind the threats.

“Football must be a space for unity, respect, and hope — never a setting for hatred, intimidation or violence,” the federation said, calling on fans to ensure that sporting disappointments never translate into real-world aggression.

The threats evoke a dark chapter in Colombian soccer history. During the 1994 World Cup in the United States, defender Andrés Escobar scored an own-goal in a 2-1 loss to the host nation. Days after the team was eliminated and returned home, Escobar was murdered in Medellín.

History repeating itself

Andrés Escobar was a famous soccer player from Colombia. He was a defender for the Colombia national team and his club team, Atlético Nacional. People called him "The Gentleman of Football" because he was very polite, worked hard, and played fairly.

In 1994, Colombia went to the World Cup in the United States. Many fans expected the team to win. But during a game against the United States, Escobar made a big mistake. He tried to block the ball, but it accidentally went into his own net. This is called an "own goal." Because of this mistake, Colombia lost the game and had to leave the tournament early.

Back in Colombia, dangerous criminals and drug cartels had bet a lot of money on the games. Escobar was sad about the mistake, but he did not want to hide. He returned home to the city of Medellín. He wrote an article in the newspaper telling people not to give up. He wrote, "Life doesn't end here."

Sadly, just a few days later on July 2, 1994, some men confronted Escobar in a parking lot. They argued with him about the own goal. One of the men shot Escobar six times, killing him. The shooter was a driver for powerful criminals who had lost money on the soccer match. More than 120,000 people attended Escobar's funeral to mourn his death.

Today, people still remember Andrés Escobar. There is a statue of him in Medellín, and a charity uses his name to help poor children play sports safely. His story reminds the world how important it is to keep soccer players safe from violence.

It's like irrationality run inside the blood of some football followers once event on the pitch don't go as wish. And this are the problems some of us keep talking about, some humans are too emotional and sentimental about certain things particularly football fandom.

I'm glad I've move past any form of emotional attachment to any football team or players, doesn't matter who you are or whatever is at stake.
