We already have a police force in Nigeria and there are still alot of security problems in the country. There is now a proposal to have a state police in all states of the federation. I am still thinking what really will the new state police bring to the table? Will the state police be better funded to fight crime with modern sophisticated security gadgets or it will be like the current policing set up we are presently having. We can't change a system if we continue doing what we were doing before. I still believe that the police force should be bolstered in the modern way of policing as it requires fewer man power. We should embrace quality over quantity. My thoughts though.

guobe:We're just copying US as we did with presidential system of govt. But just because it works in US doesn't mean it will work. Just as we created a waay too powerful presidency because we copied US without having any of the elements that keep a US president in check. Same way, state police won't work well in Nigeria because the people are too corrupt. BUT I think it is still better because NPF is totally rotten! |

QuinQ:If the present set up by federal is not functioning properly, I don't see the state doing better. Copy copy without no blue print will do us no good. |
| Re: What Are The Advantages Of Having A State Police In Nigeria? by QuinQ: 6:35pm On Jul 14 |
guobe:The problem is, I personally think almost anything is better than NPF. One advantage is that each state will now be almost totally responsible for their security. If they spend money to have a good police department they'll be more secure than those who refuse to or can't. It will no longer be one-size-fits-all. The huge downside is that inevitably the state police will become private property of the governor and I don't see how that can be avoided in a place like Nigeria. In US the state and local police departments are truly independent. Thst won't happen in Nigeria |

Well, let me join in your conversation. We need to try something new as the present police force appears to be overwhelmed with just about 400,000 for a population of over 250 million. I know some federal police officers and I can tell you that some spend about 2 weeks on duty before getting a few days off and that to me is not good for the mental health. Most public institutions in Nigeria are overwhelmed. I work in the health sector and I can tell you that this is one of our challenges. Adding state police to compliment the efforts of the federal might help improve security situation just as we have street security guards in our neighbourhood. Just this evening on my way from work, I saw 5 soldiers guarding a Chinese construction worker. These are soldiers that could have been in the front line reducing terrorist activities. |

yomi007k:Soldiers doing that is ILLEGAL! It is corruption! And that's the problem that will also occur with state police. But I think it'll be better than what we have now |

Nigeria is doomed to fail. State police or not |
| Re: What Are The Advantages Of Having A State Police In Nigeria? by Rich4god(m): 8:51pm On Jul 14 |
No matter how the governor and politicians of the state try to use the stage police for witch hunt. Police in Southern Nigeria will never fold their arms and watch bandits overrun villages. And southern police and got will never recruit repented bandits. All these bad things will stop at the northern border. Nigeria greatest threat now is fulani bandits and state police will ensure that their mission to over run Nigeria will not succeed. No one will start calling from Abuja to tell police not to attack bandits enclave. |

First off, every state has its own set of laws. There are state laws as well as Federal laws. People are forgetting that the Federal police will still exist alongside the state police. |

I think state police can help improve security because officers will know their communities better and respond to crimes faster. It will also reduce the work of the Nigeria Police Force. But there are also concerns. Some people fear governors may use state police against political opponents. Some states may not have enough money to run it well, and there could be abuse of power if there are no proper checks. In my opinion, state police can work in Nigeria, but only if there are strong laws to stop abuse, proper funding, and independent bodies to hold officers accountable. |

State policing is actually a positive step, and it’s a system already practiced in advanced countries. With this in place, it will be harder for criminals to commit offenses in one state and to Abuja, like moving from Oyo to Abuja. It will also help reduce the excessive power of the presidency, as states become more independent and less reliant on the federal government during elections. In other words, governors won’t feel pressured to defect to ruling parties just to secure a second term. obembet opinion |

Don't mind them. As if it's not the same extortionists in the federal level that would be reorganised for state extortions...supported by their DPOs, Commissions and bosses expecting returns. |

State police is for a purpose which it will serve perfectly well. That's terrorism. No bastard will cross into another state to carry out Jihad, indigenous police will roast him alive. But in terms of corruption it will still be thesame. |

Instead of the DSS holding the bag of the local government chairman’s wife, now it will be the state police. 😅😅😅 |

I don't know it might work in other places but you see Akwa ibom State, it will be a total disaster. Just take a look at the ordinary ibom community watch. You only get recruited based on recommendation from LG chairman, ward leader or councilor not on merit. |

Nwaikpe:I tire my brother, most of the police we have already are already attached to one politician or the other, now they will be spreading them to lower grade politicians. |

chatinent:But you guys all cheered and welcomed the formation of ESN . Why then is it hard to have a police force that is composed wholly of your people that will be committed to providing policing and security ? How can you support the illegal criminal infested ESN and be against state police that will have a legal framework ? I believe the issue isn't your rejection of local policing for your state and region but for other states and regions. As it stands now, only the SE and the Fulani are against State police. Why is that ? |

femi4:My brother, modern policing have gone past that stage if you really want to fight crime. We should embrace more of technology in fighting crime than humans. I trust a local dog as security than a police man in Nigeria. |

I want to state categorically that state police will be as evil, demonic, corrupt, inept, poorly funded like their progenitor .... Filled with unfit , trigger happy, pot billed and pls pls he dey carry me go where I no know personnel's ... They'll mount road blocks to collect kickbacks. At stations, you must pay to open file, pay for release, and ultimately bribe your way out as a notorious crime lord... Plus they'll close at 6pm for security reasons.. Nigeria will work when the time is right... We're just part of history for now. |

State police idea won't work. If Nigeria was a working nation trust me people will make a fortune from suing the police.. |
