Bridging the Digital Divide: Addressing Critical ICT Challenges in the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) for Improved Student Service Delivery The National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) was established to provide flexible, technology-driven education that enables students to learn irrespective of their geographical location. As the largest open and distance learning institution in Nigeria, the university has made significant contributions to expanding access to higher education. However, despite these achievements, persistent shortcomings in its Information and Communication Technology (ICT) system continue to create serious obstacles for students across the country. One of the most pressing challenges is the inability of many students to register their semester courses even after paying all approved fees. Students frequently encounter portal failures, missing course registration lists, login errors, and delayed activation of payment records. These technical problems often prevent students from registering within the stipulated period, causing unnecessary anxiety, delayed graduation, and financial hardship. Another major concern is the centralized approval process for seminars, research projects, and other academic activities. Although NOUN operates numerous study centres across the federation, students are still required to wait for approvals processed centrally. This often results in prolonged delays before students can commence seminars or project work, thereby extending their duration of study. A decentralized approval system, with clearly defined responsibilities assigned to qualified officials at accredited study centres, would significantly reduce waiting time and improve academic efficiency. Students also experience frequent downtime of the university portal, particularly during registration and examination periods when demand is highest. The inability of the ICT infrastructure to accommodate heavy traffic disrupts academic activities and creates frustration among students who rely entirely on online services. Communication between the ICT Directorate and students is another area requiring urgent improvement. Students often receive little or no timely information regarding technical issues, maintenance schedules, or expected resolution timelines. This communication gap leaves students uncertain about the status of their academic processes and increases dissatisfaction. Furthermore, the ICT support system requires strengthening. Many students report delays in resolving complaints submitted through support channels. A more responsive helpdesk with defined response timelines, live chat support, and effective ticket-tracking mechanisms would greatly enhance service delivery. To address these challenges, the university should invest in upgrading its ICT infrastructure, expand server capacity, decentralize seminar and project approval processes to qualified study centre officials, automate payment verification and course registration, strengthen technical support services, and establish an efficient communication system that keeps students informed in real time. As Nigeria's premier open and distance learning institution, NOUN has both the opportunity and responsibility to provide seamless digital services that reflect international best practices. Resolving these ICT challenges will not only improve students' academic experience but also strengthen public confidence in the university's commitment to quality education. A modern, reliable, and student-centred ICT system is essential for ensuring that every learner can complete academic requirements efficiently, regardless of location.

Good afternoon everyone Pls do you or anyone here knows anyone who found their name on recently released graduation list, especially this year without doing DES303? 1. My project result is out and I have no outstanding course on my result support page. 2. My name is not on the 2027 Batch 1 graduation list. 3. My portal is still open instead of being locked for graduation. Please how can I find out what is delaying me from clearance so I can resolve it this semester? hardeycute: |
