First of all, gatekeep nor mean gateman πŸ˜….

In street terms, it means "to dey hide update or discourage people from trying to do wetin you dey benefit from".

You may have heard someone say it, or even said it yourself, that if to say na "black man" invent many of the free things we have access to today, na only them and their family go dey use am.

We've seen this with friends, colleagues, neighbours and even siblings sef... One person will get a certain opportunity and will start making some really good profits, but they will deny that that there's money in it, or some will mask their strategy by saying "na God dey help me o".

We scarcely share things for general benefits. Some will even ask you to pay for something that they got for free sef. Why is that?

1. Is it because we had a bad experience in the past when we maybe shared something and they didn't appreciate?

2. Is it because we wan "better pass our neighbor"?

3. Is it because we want people to always depend on us, instead of just teaching them how to fish.

Share your opinion and experience. Also, share your positive experience in sharing "updates" and the reward/gratitude you got from the person you helped.

- Let's have a weekend conversation 😁

To me, they are afraid that the person might go about abusing it. I don't really know how to explain this abuse.

If you give a white man knowledge, he will twerk it to a meaningful, modest and profitable manner in which it will make that skill last a generation-times.

I might be wrong though.

Well, you're correct too, many people feel like that, especially if they've had bad experience with trying to "help people" - someone made a thread on nairaland which day here that the person he brought to their office is now using style to want to "take his job"

It is largely influenced by poverty. Nigeria is a country with a lot of poor people, so whenever any update land, everyone wants to benefit and possibly exploit it. After a short while, the update will cast because there are too many people trying to eat and the cake can't go round.

There was an update where you could use Access bank card to buy dollars from a platform and sell at a higher rate on another platform. The cards had about 200$ monthly limit and were blue in color. There was also the black card.
I kid you not, there were boys in Abuja going round the Access bank branches, claiming they misplaced their cards, so they can get a new one. In reality, they were exhausting the monthly dollar limit in minutes. Some of these boys were collecting up to 3 different cards daily from different branches using the same excuse. When Access bank discovered the ruse, they reduced the monthly limit to 10 dollars. Naso that update cast. Then sef Access bank Mastercard became scarce and you'll see guys texting you asking if you have Access Mastercard and if you do, you'll get a commission.

Once you share an update, most people will want to exploit it. And that's why Nigerians are banned from using some online services or platforms.

Visa update oh
Online job update oh
Online survey update oh

Nigerians will exploit and abuse them all.

The answer is we as a people are inherently selfish and greedy.
We prefer that people will defer to us and call us trailblazers and have them feed out of our hands rather than showing people the way.
Although, in many cases, you have to maintain a competitive edge over others especially in business. Even at that, you see that people can gain from your knowledge and they are not direct competitors, ask how E dey go; the answer as always Na God ooo

It is as a result of jealousy, crab mentality and envy. Most of them don’t want others to be like them. They like when ONLY them are being hailed and respected . A very bad character I must say
Re: Why Do Some Nigerians Gatekeep? Share Your Experience by twosquare(m): 10:00am On Jul 18
To prevent abuse nah... you know how our people are...dem go rush into it until they useless that thing. That's similar to foreign opportunities too, until they ban them, eyes no go clear.

I prefer people coming into it via personal research and toil. That way, they will appreciate what they have more and reduce abuse.

So many betrayals out there.. loyalty is a very scarce commodity.
Majority of we humans are very ungrateful. In every person you think u know deeply, there's a version of them you don't know and can never know.

For example, take a deep look in the mirror and look intensely and ask silently " who really am i"?
Re: Why Do Some Nigerians Gatekeep? Share Your Experience by Dmthreads(m): 10:01am On Jul 18
I think it's a mix of all three, but scarcity mentality is the biggest reason. Many people grow up believing that if others succeed, their own opportunities will reduce. In reality, knowledge doesn't finish. One person's success doesn't stop another's.

I've also noticed that the people who freely share valuable information often build stronger networks, earn more trust, and attract even bigger opportunities. Gatekeeping may give a temporary advantage, but generosity usually pays better in the long run. The key is to share wisely with people who are willing to put in the work.

Re: Why Do Some Nigerians Gatekeep? Share Your Experience by Lukuluku69(m):
It is the African attempt at Patent....

I will explain.

In the Western world, if you discovered stuff, the Laws allows you to benefit from it for many years through PATENT.

Anyone that uses what you discovered and gain money from it will PAY the original discoverer. It is your Intellectual Property.

In Africa, we PATENT that discovery thru MYTHS and CRAZY STORIES around the usage of that stuff e.g I know some Medical Herbal cures that some Yorubas will tell you it won't have efficacy UNLESS it is Administered by the Family of the man that made the discovery. That way, they keep the RECIPE within and it passes on for generations

Its poverty mentality.

The idea that opportunity and resoirces are so scarce that one has to displace another to get it.

The idea that theres only one space at the top.

Its the illusion of low self esteem masked as competition.

From a business standpoint, I started a production business and employed people. I have not even made the capital back not to talk of profit and some of my staff had already taken my trade secrets to be producing exactly what they are producing in my factory in their house, sidelining my business that employed them. From that angle, tell me why I will not Gatekeep.

several examples abound

i worked in corporate and cars were regularly auctioned for staff to bid for.

these cars had net book value of 0 by deprecation, but were mostly in fair conditon

staff could buy cars [then] at prices from 400 to 600k

then some people started bringing their car dealer freinds into it. as it was competitive b iddig, and teh dealers could sell outsie for 2 or 3 m, the whole thing was scattered

the same happened with shoprite then - they were selling five alive at the lowest price anywhere because they had bulk purchase agreement. so what happened nigerians started going to shoprite to buy in bulk to resell. so shoprite started limiting the max number of five alive you can buy at a time

even now, i see some businesses that sell at regular discount and i say nothing in public because what will happen is hustlers will spoil it for everyone

you also have the bast disation where some people are in a business and making proit and then other get the basic concept and flood the market. in the 1990s pure/satchet water started out as an elite feature in owambe parties. it was costly, but it was also well packaged and safe. somewhere along the line, everyone got in on it and today you can get pure water that was taken straight from a well . the cost is rock bottom, but so is the standard

those are my own experiences and perspectives on the matter

Better don't mind these ones. The people at the top echelon of wealth in the world today don't share info...it's among themselves. Only poor people shout and scream and insult about people gatekeeping.

If there is no gatekeeping, there will be nothing like insider trading. If you know you know. I can't insult anyone who gatekeeps, because I've seen things and ponder on them. All I will just do is waka pass. Good for them.

Is this related to why we do not EXPECT local and state governments to employ enough well paid teachers to make education free for all children, despite the UBEC established by Obasanjo/ Atiku administration over a quarter century ago to help states with federal matching funds for nine years free and compulsory education of all children?

Can we have any meaningful, sustained development without everyone having basic education to be a productive workforce?

Has any governor since 1999 employed up to 19,500 teachers like Makinde did without calling himself a progressive politician like those balablu bulaba leaders looters in All Promises Cancelled, APC camp of progreThieves?

anonimi:
NUT commends Oyo over recruitment of 19,500 teachers

The Nigeria Union of Teachers, Oyo State, has commended Governor Seyi Makinde-led government for recruiting 19,500 teachers in five years.

The union, in a statement signed by the NUT Chairman, Oladimeji Raji and the Secretary, Salami Olukayode, noted that the appointment of 5,000 teachers in his first term and 14,500 since the inception of his second term into the state primary and secondary schools was noteworthy.

The union said the ripple effects of the recruitment were that it would address the problems of inadequate manpower in the education sector and promote teaching and learning.

The statement read, β€œYour disposition towards turning the tide of the education system of Oyo State remains unprecedented and unmatched not only in the annals of recruitment history of our dear state in recent times but also across the entire 36 states of the Federation including the Federal Capital Territory.

β€œYour Excellency Sir, your achievements in the education sector since assumption of office particularly, on the successful recruitment of over 14,000 qualified teaching professionals and about 3,500 non- teaching personnel, aside from an appreciative number of caregivers is a clear cut and a perfect reflection of your results-oriented style of leadership aimed at providing free, qualitative and quantitative education to the amiable citizens of Oyo State. This gesture shall, without doubt, have a significant touch in our classroom and as well enhance educational service delivery to our school children.”

Imagine, through diligence and perseverance, you discover a hustle formular that works. You then give the update to one dim-witted fella. He might even give it to people more dim-wited than him. Then they cast it in no time.

Nobody wants that.

I once gave out an info for free, you need to see how it was abused. Some even started created content around it. Now it's no longer a trade secret. Yesterday, a lady called and was asking me an info. She has seen that I know it. I blunting told her to go do research, and that the first info I gave them, they abused. Something I spent over a 1 million to learn and discover, somebody will just call you and say, "just give me the formula". Like seriously? I will drop it for you just like that?

I once worked for man. He paid a company heavily to teach him a recipe. When he learnt it, he modified. The company reached out to his company, ready to pay even higher to get the modified recipe. The man refused. The company now buy from him to mix with their own product. Now you get the point why people gatekeep?
