Four Outstanding Nigerian Professors Who Never Had PhD In Nigeria today, it is really not possible to become a Professor without previously getting a PhD. However, there have been exemptions in the country's history. Some well-known examples include: ⭐WOLE SOYINKA: He does not hold a PhD. He studied at: University College Ibadan (now the University of Ibadan), where he began his university education. University of Leeds, where he completed a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in English in 1958. Although he did not pursue a doctoral degree, Soyinka's distinguished career as a playwright, poet, essayist, novelist, and public intellectual earned him many honorary doctorates (honoris causa) from universities around the world. In 1986, he became the first African to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature, recognized for his profound contributions to world literature. ⭐CHINUA ACHEBE He did not earn a PhD. He held a bachelor's degree from the University College Ibadan. He became a professor based on his extraordinary literary contributions. However, he received more than 30 honorary doctorates (honorary PhDs) from universities around the world in recognition of his extraordinary contributions to literature, education, and culture. These honorary degrees were awarded by institutions such as: 👉Harvard University 👉Brown University 👉University of Cape Town 👉University of Toronto 👉Dartmouth College. Achebe studied at University College, Ibadan (now the University of Ibadan), where he earned a bachelor's degree. He became one of Africa's most celebrated writers through his literary achievements rather than through a doctoral degree. ⭐JOHN PEPPER CLARK He became a professor of literature without a PhD. Widely known as J. P. Clark or J. P. Clark-Bekederemo. He studied at: University College Ibadan (now the University of Ibadan), where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in English. Despite not holding a doctorate, Clark had a distinguished academic career. He taught literature for many years at the University of Lagos and became a professor based on his scholarship, literary achievements, and academic contributions. He was one of Nigeria's most celebrated writers, best known for works such as: 👉Song of a Goat (play) 👉The Raft (play) 👉Ozidi (dramatic adaptation) 👉Casualt!es: Poems 1966–68 (poetry) ⭐Bruce Onobrakpeya Bruce Onobrakpeya did not earn a PhD. He studied at the Nigerian College of Arts, Science and Technology, Zaria (now part of Ahmadu Bello University), where he obtained a Diploma in Fine Arts and a teacher's qualification. However, in recognition of his extraordinary contributions to art and culture, he has received several honorary doctorates, including: An Honorary Doctor of Letters (D.Litt.) from the University of Ibadan. An Honorary Doctor of Arts (Hon. D.A.) from Delta State University. Source: Ethnic African Stories

If you ever read the 'African Writers Series' edited by Chinua Achebe, you will appreciate the contributions of these literary giants to our educational development. When the series was discontinued,I said that the nail on the coffin of African literature has started, years later ,it all but dead. |

prophetwis:My favourite writer connected to them as a kid was his one time boss, Cyprian Ekwensi, the truest of Nigerians with a wonderful imagination. His tales would make great visual Hollywoodlike series if it could be pulled off....a simply fantastic storyteller and quite under appreciated. |

prophetwis:Let me be a little more specific Heinemann African Writers Series Book series was not owned totally by an African. It was owned and financed by Heinemann Educational Books (HEB), a prominent British publishing house based in London. Founded by Alan Hill of Heinemann Educational Books with legendary Nigerian novelist Chinua Achebe as its first editorial advisor, the series published 359 books between 1962 and 2003, establishing a global canon for African poetry, drama, and fiction. The ultimate financial and corporate control stayed firmly in the hands of British executives like Alan Hill. To ensure authenticity, Heinemann gave Chinua Achebe and subsequent African editors total power over editorial decisions. They decided which books were accepted, edited, and published, essentially shaping the literary voice of the continent. After Heinemann officially halted the original series in 2003, Penguin looked to revive the project under its Penguin Classics and Modern Classics imprints. To maintain direct continuity and historical legitimacy, Penguin brought back Chinua Achebe to serve as the editorial advisor for this new iteration. Penguin began re-releasing foundational books from the original Heinemann catalog such as the works of Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o and Dambudzo Marechera.

It seems when you are in this field of study - Arts, Literature, Theatre Arts, etc - you don't need to put in too much efforts into studying. Just be a world-class writer, and your work recognized all the world, then you'll automatically become a Prof. No research, no findings, no dissertations, just know how to write. You can't try that sh*t in Sciences! |

That was the standard educational system. I read a novel of that era where the retiring Vice Chancellor was contemplating who to hand over to. 2 most senior. Prof A doesn't have a doctorate degree. And Dr B was not a professor. I researched further. In US, professors are university lecturers. When Bill Clinton was a university lecturer, he was addressed as Professor Clinton. But when he left university job, till when became president, he was addressed as Mr Clinton. |

PhD is overrated, I know many who could not pass ICAN ACA, or ACCA, but PhD in Accounting. One was fighting to be HOD , but ICAN threatened not to accredit the courses, except an ICAN member is HOD. |
