Police Hand Over Recovered Vehicle To Owner 5 Years After Theft by nlfpmod(mod): 8:56pm On Jul 25
The Gombe State Police Command has handed over a Toyota Highlander recovered in the state to its rightful owner, Mrs Cecilia A. Duru of Port Harcourt, Rivers State, nearly five years after the vehicle was stolen.

The vehicle was presented to its owner on Friday after police concluded investigations that confirmed her ownership.

In a statement, the Police Public Relations Officer in Gombe, DSP Buhari Abdullahi, said the SUV was recovered on June 8, 2026, by operatives of the State Intelligence Department (SID) in collaboration with officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).

He said the vehicle was intercepted during a routine vehicle data verification exercise at the Gombe State Internal Revenue Service Vehicle Licensing Office, where discrepancies in its registration documents raised suspicion.

According to the police, investigations revealed that the Toyota Highlander was stolen in Rivers State on September 17, 2021, before it was smuggled to the Republic of Niger in 2023.

The command said the vehicle later re-entered Nigeria through the Illela border in Sokoto State in October 2025, after which it was sold in Kaduna State and eventually brought to Gombe for re-registration, leading to its recovery.

The police described the successful recovery and return of the vehicle as a demonstration to the effectiveness of intelligence-led policing and inter-agency collaboration in combating vehicle theft and related crimes.

The command said efforts were ongoing to track down and prosecute those responsible for stealing and illegally transporting the vehicle across international borders.

It also advised prospective vehicle buyers to verify the authenticity of ownership documents before purchasing any vehicle and urged members of the public to report suspicious transactions promptly to security agencies.

Kudos to the Nigerian police force. Reminiscent of how they helped recovered my vehicle after a botched kidnapping incident. The kidnappers abandoned the vehicle for whatever reason when it shutoff and left them fleeing on foot. Although one DPO wanted to reap where he didn’t sow and was vehemently resisted. grin. I give God the glory for that mighty deliverance and recovery of my property.

The police should please recover my Dunlop slippers that was stolen in 1994 when I went to watch Nigeria vs Argentina in USA 94 world cup in my neighbor's house. I had to go back home barefooted.

I will really appreciate it if they can locate the slippers for me because it means a lot to me. Thanks in advance.

So confirmation of its ownership took a whole five years, that’s serious
Re: Police Hand Over Recovered Vehicle To Owner 5 Years After Theft by IamPatriotic(m):
Thank God it was recovered and eventually handed back to the owner.
Kudos to the Gombe State Internal Revenue Service Vehicle Licensing Office. They made the recovery happen and, more importantly, special commendation to them for not looking away or collecting a bribe after they discovered the discrepancies.
It is also worth noting that the woman tried. Her testimony will be pleasant to hear.

Just imagine. The vehicle had changed hands and owners in the last 5 years.

It'll be better for the woman to sell the car and buy another one.

If any DPO tries to play any sily phoney pranks with me or my property, I am marching to the office of the CP of the state or AIG of that zone.

The DPO is usually a CSP or sometimes an SP, a mid-level senior officer. He will be called to order.

I no get time for rubbish.

People like you are usually the quickest to abuse the government, not knowing that, more often than not, you are the architect of your own wahala.
Commonly, you can't even read a post of just five paragraphs. Instead, you rush to the comment section and blame the Nigerian Police Force. What a lazy approach.

A. stolen vehicle was recovered ... isn't it normal procedure to track and inform the owner? What's up with all this ceremony? ... and no one arrested? Police grab any opportunity to pay themselves on the back
