I wonder why hotels are so expensive in the Southwest. I may understand why in Lagos but all these osun, Ogun, Ondo, Ekiti, etc I don't.
I went to Abeokuta the other day and needed to lodge for three days. What they showed me as affordable hotel was a low key quest house and it goes for 14k. That type of guest house in Anambra is about 4k. The level of the hotel in in this very thread in anambra is not more than 20k or 25k at most.
Nice one. I will one day revisit South East after more than 20years

When last were you at the said 'guest house' in Anambra?? Because there is no N4k hotel anywhere in Nigeria at this present time

Pre-Tinupoo, very possible (and with lots of bedbugs and rats inside the room with you)...but not today with one litre of fuel at N1,300.
Up till this moment I am chatting you there are still 7k, 8k hotels. I mean good rooms not with bed bug. Those ones with bed bug are what you can find in the remote villages and at much lower prices. There are some streets you can find about than 50 hotels. I know what I am saying. The prices over there are unbelievably high.

Above 1million
GanagiBitrus:
$40 is far more affordable to an average Oyibo, than ₦55k (same $40) is affordable to an average Nigerian.

Your monthly salary must be well over ₦500k to see ₦55k hotel as cheap.
How many Nigerians earn as much as that?

Well I've never been to the southeast, so..

Ile-Ife is a university town though, it's not actually a rural area anymore. But you're right, 50k is still on the high side for a town of that calibre, should be in the range of 20, 25k max. Nigerians are just greedy

See question?
55k Akara startup capital?

AderonkeOlaniyi:
If you remove 55k from 70k salary to rent a hotel, how much go remain? This is pure madness and it's not even supposed to be discussed. It could be cheap to him because he's from a place where their systems work. How many people living in that area can afford it?

It is not about being a university town. From my experience hotels are surprisingly costly in Southwest. Awka is also a university town where unizik is located. The state University, COUTH though located in another town is close to awka such that even students of the university also live in awka. Still good grade hotsls are far cheaper.

Why do you people assume that most Nigerians earn 70k? This is the Lamba una dey tell una sef. Most Nigerians are making in multiples of 70k . 70k is used to talk down on the govt and Nigeria.

A foreign tourist has sparked mixed reactions online after sharing a video of himself and a companion arriving at a modern-looking hotel in Ile-Ife, Osun State, during a downpour. As they approach the building, the on-screen text reads:

US$40 hotel in Ile-Ife, Osun State 🇳🇬

They check in through a clean, decent-looking lobby, and the staff show them to Room 111. The room looks surprisingly good for the price — featuring a clean, modern bed, air conditioning, a smart TV with apps, decent furniture, and good lighting.

The man is visibly shocked and delighted by the quality ("I'm crazy now..."wink. He keeps expressing how impressive it is for the money and thanks the staff at the end. He is even more wowed when he sees the smart TV in the room, and a staff member explains that he can watch YouTube and other apps on it.

Even some Nigerians are reacting to the video because of:

- How nice the hotel looks for only about $40 (around ₦55,000).
- A foreigner's genuine positive reaction to a budget hotel in a smaller Nigerian city like Ile-Ife, Osun State.

The video quickly attracted various reactions, along with some light banter in the comments about whether the man is a real "oyibo" or a local pretending. However, the man is actually a popular tourist who documents his travels across various social media platforms.

In short, it's a positive budget hotel review that gained attention because the place looks far better than people expected for the price, and the foreigner's excited reaction makes the video even more entertaining.

Watch the video and drop your thoughts in the comments.

You are mixing up things.

Nigeria is not very cheap. Nigeria is filled with extreme poverty, jobless paupers.

Do you see the difference huh
