Focus: The Honour of Parents

WORD FOR TODAY
You do not honour your parents because they were perfect; you honour them because God commands it. Obedience to God's Word brings freedom, healing, and positions you for His blessings!
****************************************
Scriptural Reference
"Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 'Honor your father and mother,' which is the first commandment with promise: 'that it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth.'" — Ephesians 6:1–3 (NKJV)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Honouring parents is often easy when the relationship has been loving and nurturing. However, for some people, the journey is much more difficult. There are those who grew up in broken homes, experienced rejection, neglect, abandonment, or the pain of parents who lacked either the willingness or the resources to care for them. Such wounds can leave deep scars that become barriers to reconciliation.
Yet, as believers, our standard is not determined by how people treat us but by what God commands us. We honour our parents first as an act of obedience to God. We honour the divine position He gave them in our lives, even when they did not fully live up to their responsibilities. This does not mean approving of wrongdoing or pretending painful experiences never happened. Rather, it means refusing to allow bitterness, resentment, or unforgiveness to control our hearts.
When we choose honour, we close the door to the enemy, who often seeks to use unresolved offences to keep people in spiritual bondage. A heart that forgives and honours God's instruction creates room for His peace, healing, and favour to flourish.
I once heard the testimony of a couple who had waited many years for the fruit of the womb. They had prayed fervently, sought medical help, and trusted God, yet nothing changed. During a season of prayer and counsel, they became convinced that they needed to reconcile with a parent they had cut off after years of unresolved offence. They humbled themselves, sought reconciliation, restored honour, and renewed the relationship. By God's grace, nine months later they welcomed their first child.
Whether every situation unfolds in exactly the same way or not, the lesson is clear: obedience to God's principles opens our hearts to His work. Reconciliation does not manipulate God into blessing us, but it removes barriers of disobedience and aligns us with His will. God delights when His children walk in humility, forgiveness, and honour.
If there is an offence that has separated you from your parents, ask the Lord for wisdom and grace. Where reconciliation is possible and safe, take the first step. Even if all they gave you was the gift of life, thank God for that gift and choose to honour Him through your response. Do not allow yesterday's wounds to rob you of tomorrow's blessings.
Questions for Meditation
Is there any unresolved offence I need to surrender to God? Have I allowed bitterness to replace the honour God commands? What practical step can I take toward reconciliation where it is possible?
Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of life and for Your perfect example of love and forgiveness. Heal every wound in my heart and remove every root of bitterness. Give me the humility to obey Your Word by honouring my parents and seeking reconciliation where it is possible. Let my life be free from every foothold of the enemy, and help me to walk in the blessings that accompany obedience to You. In Jesus' name. Amen.
Main Emphasis:
Honouring your parents is ultimately an act of obedience to God, not a reward for their perfection. Choose forgiveness over bitterness, reconciliation over division, and obedience over offence.
May the Lord heal every broken relationship, grant you the courage to forgive, and fill your heart with His love. As you walk in humility and obedience, may He establish your life in peace, preserve your destiny, and cause His blessings to abound in every area of your life, in Jesus' name. Amen.
Relationship-wise, I don't think Jesus was very good to his parents and family until he was on the cross in John.
In one instance, he shouted at his mother O woman in the build-up to turning water to wine!
In another instance, his family accused him of insanity in Mark....
You can then understand Jesus demanded for the SAME HONOR GIVEN TO THE FATHER.
Because Jesus is equal with the Father.
Honor to parents.
When you bring up your child with morals and fear of God, they'll honor and respect you as parents.
THE BAN ON PREACHING IN BUSES HAS BEEN BACKED BY MURIC, SAYING THEY CAN DISTRACT DRIVERS.
IF THIS BAN WERE TO BE AGAINST MUSLIMS, OUR CHRISTIAN GROUP OUT OF FEAR AND COWARDICE WILL NEVER SPEAK UP AGAINST IT, OR MOVE TO BACK THE BAN.
I dear to ask, why are Christians too fearful and cowardly, politically and socially?? The sole reason I hate to practice Christianity.
So they should have written how he drank water, used the bathroom, peeped on the way side, his immediate siblings since you think he is not good to his parents
What did he do with his parents especially when he became an adult?
Your statement implies, contrapositively, that those who did not live long, did not honour their parent
