My Experience Driving Interstate In An Electric Car by F122Y(op): 10:14am On Jul 26
When talking about electric cars, a question many Nigerians ask is how they cope on interstate travels. Well, I decided to put mine to the test. On Friday, I drove from Lagos to Ibadan and back in my car, a Changan Qiyuan Q05. Here are some of the things I experienced.
The ride was smooth and quiet, obviously due to the lack of engine noise, I could enjoy my music/radio a lot more.

The seats are very comfortable so I had no problem sitting for the journey to and fro.

The front seats are also heated and ventilated so if my legs were feeling cold I could warm them up and vice versa.

I opened up the panoramic sun roof so my passengers could have a view of the sky. It gave the car a nice convertible feeling.

We got to Ibadan in about 2 hours. My car goes 0-100 km/h in about 7 seconds so it's not slow.

We fulfilled all obligations in Ibadan and set out for Lagos that same Friday. We got to Lagos and I still had about 150km of Range left after the journey.

I never really had plans for interstate travels with this car, it was just meant for going to work and errands. But the car held up very well with the journey.
What do you think? Have you also been worried about the interstate capabilities of electric cars?

Nothing sensational about driving an EV from Lagos to Ibadan and then back to Lagos so long your EV`s drive range can cover the Kilometer.

The drive range of an EV is directly proportional to the capacity of the vehicle`s Accumulator/Battery.

Typically an EV with a 50KWH battery will do about 350km and an EV with 70KWH battery will do about 480km distance.

I was in oke-aro area few weeks ago. The roads are still very bad. However, electric vehicles work a lot better in flooded roads than you think. The lack of a front air intake makes it harder for water to damage internal components

With his battery capacity of 53KWh , he is limited by the drive range of his vehicle which should be around 400km, he can only make it to Port Harcourt if he is sure of getting a fast charging point in Benin City(half way to PH) and he is ready to spare about 2 hours for the charging process in Benin.

EV without solar panel to supply power is not good for long distance travel. Lagos to Ibadan is not far, just about 300km to and fro.

Try Lagos to Onitsha which about 1,000km to and fro. That is when you will evaluate your EV performance

28m… that’s not cheap. How fast does its battery take to charge from 0 to 100%? And can it be charged in a regular Nigeria household power outlets?

depends on the charger. There's level 1 to 3 chargers. If he's using level 1 charger, it should be around 24 hours for 0 to 100% full charge. If he's using level 2 charger, it's should be around 7 hours. Since the battery is around 50kwh. You'll need to buy and load 50kwh worth of units to charge the battery full from zero percent. I think.

Level 3 chargers are 50kw and above. The can charge from 0 to 100% in around 20 minutes. But do you know what 50kw is?

No home can produce that kind of power. It's mostly used in commercial charging stations. Even level 2 is a massive 7kw that's like running almost 20 average refrigerators at once.

Only you go dey hog more than 10 percent of your local transformer power output just to charge your ev faster.

This issue of after sale support is of great pertinence especially when it comes to driving EVs, reason why one need to be selective when buying an EV in Nigeria, only buy brands that has a well established dealership in Nigeria.

It is also of pertinence to only opt for an EV only if you can afford a brand new one because of guarantee matters. Buying a used EV is not advisable.
Re: My Experience Driving Interstate In An Electric Car by tuoyoojo(m): 12:59pm On Jul 29
That's a good one
I am hoping that with the presence of more charging stations along interstate roads, more electric car users would venture out more

Similar issue with CNG car owners; these are initial teething problems that would dissipate with time
