Osun Guber: INEC unaware of NURTW factions — REC, Babalola

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, in Osun State has said it is not aware of any faction within the National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW, in the state as it prepares logistics for the August 15 governorship election.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner, REC, Oluwatoyin Babalola, made the clarification during a town hall meeting organised by the Civil Society Network on Election Integrity in Osogbo on Sunday.

Babalola explained that the commission works directly with the national leadership of the NURTW on election logistics rather than state chapters, noting that the arrangement is guided by an existing Memorandum of Understanding between both parties.

According to her, “INEC has maintained communication with representatives of the union’s national leadership and has not received any information suggesting the existence of factions within the organisation.

“For the transportation of our materials and personnel, we rely on the NURTW and NARTO. The national leadership has an MOU with the Commission, and we have been communicating with a representative of the national leadership. We’re not aware of any factionalisation.”

She disclosed that the commission had already conducted training sessions for transport providers across all local government areas in Osun State as part of preparations for the election.

The REC added that INEC would inspect vehicles to be deployed for election duties on the Tuesday and Wednesday preceding the governorship poll to ensure they meet the standards required under the agreement with the transport unions.

“Part of the MOU is that they must provide us with good vehicles, and we have scheduled the Tuesday and Wednesday preceding the election to inspect those vehicles,” she added.

The clarification comes amid a leadership dispute within the Osun State chapter of the NURTW, where the national leadership recently constituted a new caretaker committee following disagreements within the state branch.

INEC has continued preparations for the August governorship election, with the commission stating that its logistics arrangements remain coordinated through the national leadership of the NURTW and the National Association of Road Transport Owners, NARTO, despite developments within the state chapter.

Re: Osun Guber: INEC Unaware Of NURTW Factions — REC, Babalola by Dalohad:
Which faction of NURTW did you work with when the Lagos Governor banned NURTW from the state and formed the 'Lagos parks and garages union' to be headed by Oluomo after he fell out with NURTW in Abuja some years ago before the 2023 elections?

NURTW has now been banned in Osun the way they were banned in Lagos then, and the Governor do not want to see them in his state. If you know what is good for you, do not bring them near the state.

The MOU you signed with them was not legislated by the National assembly and therefore is unconstitutional..

Keep them away from the State.

**Again, this is another reason why 100% online elections is the only way forward.
We can't have drug-induced violent NURTW thugs deciding where and how we move electoral materials in this country**

Eyeneck worked with NURTW transport providers across all local government areas in Lagos State for the election, ensuring they meet the standards required under the agreement with the transport unions to deliver Lagos State to the APC.

Would that be the legal national leadership of Baruwa or the illegitimate one of MC Oluomo supported by lawless Tinubu huh

What is good for goose is good for the gander is only applicable to this administration when they're not the one benefitting. Many of us remember how they were crying all over the media when the Buhari's administration imposed the new naira note. Unfortunately, one of the architects- Elrufai has been used and dumped in the prison.

They use the transport unions to coordinate logistics.

You won't expect INEC to have vehicles in every state, every local government, and every ward in the country.

They are supposed to use registered logistic services

This is 21st century

INEC cannot conduct credible election in this country irrespective of the political party at the upper chamber

Nigeria is one hell of a messed up country, how can INEC collaborate with illiterates and street urchins called N.U.R.T.W to distribute electoral materials, just as they did in the last election.

This sounds like a reasonable argument. But then, from another perspective, with Oluomo at the helm of NURTW you can understand the optics along with the apprehension a casual observer will have. Big conflict of interest here. With the massive budgetary allocation assigned to INEC there has to be other alternatives that will preserve and/or be seen to protect their independence as well as the integrity of their work.

Re: Osun Guber: INEC Unaware Of NURTW Factions — REC, Babalola by Fujiyama:
With all their education and exposure and sophistication (and all the other big words Nigerians love to deceive themselves with), our electoral commissions continue to 'partner' undecided with a transport union fully populated with the worst of the worst.

There are companies that produce soft drinks in this country and their sugared water can be found in every hamlet or village. How are these companies able to overcome the logistical challenge and get their merchandise to every nook and cranny of Nigeria - and INEC claims it cannot do the same...and it thus has to rely on the worst kind of degenerates to courier extremely sensitive election materials? undecided

INEC has chosen to 'partner' with a so called transport union whose leadership is openly partisan...'thugged out' reprobates who simply have no business in organizing something as important as national elections. Nigerians love to brag about how great they are - and yet their most sensitive election materials are being handled by the dregs of society. How can anyone expect things to work properly with this? How?

While I have no problem with INEC collaborating with NURTW to move election materials and workers, what I don't understand is why INEC is not installing extra monitoring devices on the chosen vehicles. The cars should at least have dash cams installed that record both ways, the road and the inside of the vehicle during the period they will be in use by INEC. This is 2026 and that's the bare minimum.

Go your long way, go through the Nigeria-Cameroon highway that Tinubu is constructing and go stay in Cameroon. Your lord Goatluck Joanthan used the same NURTW and NARTO for the election which he (Jonathan) conducted and was whipped mercillessly

Let's just have a quick chat about the upcoming elections. It’s all so straightforward. a few simple checks and balances, really. And what’s a good way to ensure everything runs smoothly? Definitely with the vehicles and the logistics, of course!?

If Adeleke is weak....we are about to know in few days to come.......everyone knows that NURTW is a tool in the hand of Tilumbu....omi ti fe teyin wo igbin lenu....

They may decide not to supply voting materials to areas where Adeleke may have upper hands.

INEC is just proving itself daily that they are not really independent

Re: Osun Guber: INEC Unaware Of NURTW Factions — REC, Babalola by Nkwazemakennyj(m): 7:31pm On Jul 27
Why will the NURTW be Incharge of transporting sensitive electoral materials to the end point. This isn't good at all and shows the high level of incompetence by the electoral body. Sensitive materials like that, should be handled and transported by INEC itself not by a biased and easily influenced group. Please the INEC should take up that responsibility by themselves. As we take note of the huge amount pump into financing the institution to provide a meaningful and well transparent election.

Very good question sir. But kindly note that Osun election is just a state election not a general election and with the amount of money pumped into INEC they should be able to handle such logistic process with no stress. Knowing fully that, they are only meant to cover a particular state. That shouldn't be a problem handling the logistics. I don't think there is a need for a third party involvement in the sensitive materials transportation
