Scholarship how? The model is not sustainable. You must think Nigeria has a bottomless pit of money.

Of the 195 nations of the world far richer and more stable than Nigeria, only 10 to 15 offer free or subsidized University education out of 195 and they are mainly very wealthy nations. Fact check me on that.

You guys should try and evolve your minds and stop talking out of blanket hatred of certain leaders. NELFUND is a fantastic scheme.

Students will begin paying back when they graduate and gain employment. The money is recycled and used for other incoming student.

Nigeria is not a communist nation. I can't even understand how anyone would suggest scholarship for University education in this day and age for every student.
Is APC a communist party since they promised free education to all children but have failed woefully to achieve anything near that?

Babasessy:
The Awolowo rebirth in the Southwest has inspired gongs, songs and rhetoric of sorts. But they have missed one point.

It occurred to me in Abeokuta last week amidst the big crowds and euphoria of the swearing-in of Senator Ibikunle Amosun as governor. In all the states from Lagos to Edo, where Awo has witnessed ideological resurgence, hardly a single family member has played a role.

So we have an Awo family without an Awo. That is an irony. But history overwhelms us with this sort of twist. Obafemi Awolowo toiled for his reputation. His roots were lowly, he toiled to school both home and abroad, launched into careers in law, business, journalism and eventually politics. He carved a niche for himself, and became the first methodical and charismatic leftist in our history.  Other leftists abounded but they did not inspire comparable drama and following.

He faced tribulations, went to jail, failed in elections, won a few, but he imprinted his ideas and legacy in the country, and no single mortal has beaten him in the history of this country. His greatest achievement was in the area of ideas, and that was how he fashioned a family. Most families are born of biology but his issued from ideology. That family suffered with him.

In a spoof of Jesus Christ, these were the men who followed him in his teachings, and endured with him in his temptations. So he formed a kingdom for them in the Southwest, in the old Western Region, presiding over his projects, his legacies and people.

In all of these, the family he had was not his flesh and blood. In another spoof of Christ, who were his family anyway? Those who were with him must be counted as his family. So, I combed in the ambience of Babatunde Raji Fashola (SAN), and I found none. I went to Ogun, I frisked the crowd under Amosun’s bower, hardly any. Around Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola in Osun, I could not lay a finger. With Governor Kayode Fayemi in Ekiti, where are the forbears of Awo? Yet, I can hear the chants of Awo. Hardly in any of the inaugural speeches or any of their other public intervention would you miss the philtre and filter of Awo from these gentlemen. To parody Novelist Joseph Conrad, they are the sparks from Awo’s sacred fire, the messengers of the might within the man.

Already all of them are pursuing the legacy ideas of Awo: free education, free health services, infrastructural development, urban renewal and economic engineering.

Lagos has posted itself as the John the Baptist. The others are putting up valiant efforts, and the world of course is watching to see how well they will perform. It will call for great work, resourcefulness and cooperation. They are the real Awoists, and Awo was a man of rigour and vigour.

The Awo son that many expected to take after the father was Olusegun, who unfortunately died in a car crash. We shall never know if he could have pulled it off.  But the others have not shown much of the paterfamilias’ brio and depth. In the past decade, under this republic, they have blended with the wrong crowd. Even H.I.D, hobnobbed with Alao-Akala, who brought illiteracy to governance; with Oyinlola who turned the grace of office into a hell-hole of despots; with Daniel who could not arrest his quick fall into megalomania.

I wrote once that this woman whom Awo once described as the jewel of inestimable value has lost value to his cause. If he came back to life, he would have committed the extraordinary act of divorce after death. Even his newspaper, The Tribune, has so stumbled and fallen that it swims in Awo’s vomit.

Uncompleted projects, dilapidated classrooms litter Ogun despite N10.2 billion rehabilitation

PREMIUM TIMES visited schools that the state government claimed to have rehabilitated and found decrepit and inadequate facilities.

Governor Dapo Abiodun said last year that over 400 primary and secondary schools have been renovated in Ogun State under his administration.

However, when PREMIUM TIMES late in 2022 toured the three senatorial districts of the state, our reporter found facilities in many public schools still in deplorable conditions.

The renovation project was executed with a N10.2 billion fund jointly contributed, equally, by the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) and the state government.

UBEC released its share of the fund to the state government in 2019 to address infrastructural decay and inadequate facilities in 236 public schools across the state.

Did Tinubu, Wike, Soludo, Umahi Take Out Student Loans To Send Children To Universities In UK—Sowore

AAC presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has accused Nigeria's political elite of neglecting public universities while ensuring that their children receive education from top institutions abroad.

In a post shared on his official X account on Monday, 27 July 2026, Sowore claimed that many former and current public officials, including governors, ministers and lawmakers, failed to use their positions to strengthen Nigeria's higher education system.

My own is that soludo did not train her daughter in foreign university, at least non that we knew until he became a governor of the state.

There is a correlation established between the two, but then there is the hyperinflation caused by Tinubu's failure to:

- crash petrol price below N185
- achieve N300/$1 in the short term
- create 50 million jobs to increase productivity.

January 18, 2024

Most tertiary institutions in the country have hiked their fees by over 150 %, putting serious strains on the finances of parents and guardians who also have to contend with the poor state of the economy which has reduced purchasing power and savings.

Checks by Vanguard Learning in public universities across the country show that the increment in obligatory fees, which started late last year is continuing, as a new session starts in some schools this January.

Only on January 6, this year, for instance, the Federal University of Technology, Akure, FUTA, Ondo State came out with a proposal to hike fees by over 100%.

Sowore what is your headache, did beneficiaries complain to you. At least if they couldn't give free education but granting loans which will be paid back when the beneficiaries get job is better than denying them outright opportunity to go for higher education. The other past regimes that didn't do this, what did we do to them.

Nothing wrong if you're bouyant enough to give as many within your capacity scholarship.

student have to FEED , and pay for books and accommodation , tuition . Whatever makes it possible for them not to drop out of school is welcomed . Again a ask, what type of a man refuse to pay their debt a specially when paying up free space for several others to enjoy same Opportunity . Does that mean you want to take that loan with the mindset of never settling your debt when you start earning ? A loan with less than 8% interest that you will be deducted a certain percentage of your monthly earnings when you start working . Really? What is to say such a person won't do more than our politicians who hardly keep their campaign promises . Only a worthless man that deliberately won't pay his debt or keep his words .

If you don't want the loan, pay your fees. Nigerians have been asking for credit facilities like available in developed countries. People using credit card to buy phones, laptos, houses, etc. Jagaban provided it for students and parents struggling to pay for their education, the next goalpost is to ask if Tinubu's children use it. SMH.
They know this is a good idea but the problem they have is the person implementing it.

That's not Sowore's point... No need for this needless deflection.

Agreed, subsidized or free tertiary education is an untenable mirage.

But... What is stopping all children and wards of those feeding fat from the nation's limited wealth from schooling here?!!

Every single one of them (or at least most of them) benefited from quality education in these same Nigerian schools... So, what is chasing their own kids from enjoying the same?!!

Same issue with the healthcare sector...!

Shall we also talk about or defend them in the area of security?!!
I don't get this argument you guys make and I can only put it down to poor man's mentality.

If you have the wealth, what is wrong with sponsoring your child to learn at the finest educational institution in the world?

It is a personal choice political leaders can make and only people with unreasonable and hard-line mentality will deny them of that free choice.

Many reasonable people will understand political leaders are allowed to make free choices pertaining to their private lives and children so long as they do the best for those they lead as Tinubu is doing with NELFUND.

My parents sent me to the UK in my early teens, along with my other siblings, and I went to Uni there. Are they politicians ? Of course not. Just parents who want the best for their kids and funded it.

Politicians are same. Yes they are leaders but parents also with private ambition for their children you lot should not invade upon in Sowore communist and agbero-style aluta continua bullying.

Everybody, including politicians, deserve private family life and choices. Any reasonable person would understand that.

They don't have to educate their kids in Nigeria or even use Nigerian healthcare because those considerations are private choices.

Their core brief is to improve Nigeria. If they are doing that, as Tinubu is doing, remove your eyes from the private choices they are entitled to.

Sowore has no point because, as the immature troublemaker and communist-leaning menace he is, he is demanding undemocratic restriction of life choices for politicians whereas some choices must be independent for everyone be they politicians, businessmen or civil servants.

God bless you. I don’t believe people will complain about NELFUND.

The NELFUND (Nigerian Education Loan Fund) student loan carries an interest rate of 0%. In other words, it is completely interest-free—you repay only the amount you borrowed, with no interest or hidden charges added.

Some key features of the scheme are:

* Interest rate: 0%
* Tuition: Paid directly to your institution.
* Upkeep allowance: Eligible students receive a monthly upkeep stipend (currently ₦20,000).
* Repayment: Begins two years after completing the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), giving graduates time to settle into employment before repayment starts.

This makes NELFUND one of the most borrower-friendly education financing schemes in Nigeria, since there is no interest accumulation while you are in school or during the moratorium period before repayment begins.
Thanks for educating the ignoramuses here. The problem with Nigeria today is horrendous ethnic hatred and disunity.

Many automatically oppose and attempt demarketing anything and everything PBAT does, without a thought for the stakeholder beneficiaries as shown in the video below, out of nothing but ethno-religious dislike of Mr.President.

How can any sensible, progressive and reasonable Nigerian not praise NELFUND?

Why shouldn't they be able to pay it in the first place
I was able to pay #1900 sch fees and #90 for hostel accommodation. Why has the government made it difficult for parents not to be able to pay as result of mismanagement of the economy. The money being looted by dubious contracts not captured in our budget can subsidize education and agricultural sector.
