My Pepper And Vegetable Farming Journey by Bodex2000(op): 9:11pm On Jul 30
Hey guys,

After doing extensive research, I am venturing into production by myself for the first time. Hope it goes well.

I am working on two plots of land. One for open field Cayenne pepper and the other for Lagos spinach.

I did some slashing and herbicide application with the aim of burning everything to the ground before ridging. It is much easier to work on a land that has been fully cleared.

Labour cost is high in my location. They billed me like a client the last time I patronized them. Imagine clearing half plot with 30k. Sorry, not paying! Not when I have physical power and herbicides.

Sad news!

I lost my original Ghana Cutlass in transit. Now I have to buy another one and sharpen it. Another 10k about to cry.

Tomorrow, I'll hopefully go to the market to confirm that my crop selections are right and buy some inputs

I was able to go to the market today to get an idea of the market acceptability of the variety of the cayenne pepper I plan to grow.

The MARKET HAD NO PREFERENCE!
Also got a pepper seller interested in off-taking. Pepper was not much in the market generally.

Vegetables are a different story
Ugu too much. Just like water. An entire bundle was around 8 to 10k.

The remaining vegetables: Shoko, Ewedu and tete had better prices at 1k and 2k per bunch tied in the picture below.
I might just go with them on the second plot.

These are shoko vegetable tied for 2k

Re: My Pepper And Vegetable Farming Journey by Bodex2000(op): 8:32pm On Jul 31
Also got my seed trays and insecticides but the agro store didn't have everything and all their stuff had a 2 to 3k naira markup compared to online stores. Those can add up very fast. I had to buy something because the store owner had good customer service.

By the way, I want to thank all the Pros on this platform. Their experiences which they shared freely informed some of my decisions.

Well done Op, keep progressing well
Do you mind mentioning where the location of your farm is?

I toured the entire market today, yet I couldn't find a single agro store with everything I needed.
I'm going to order online now

Bro, good Afternoon. Which market did you go to? Did you try Sabo Market in Ikorodu? Did you try Mile 12 Market in Ikorodu? I am in Ikorodu too. I am happy with your plan for vegetables. I am in the Ijede Road axis of Ikorodu but I frequent Salabo which is not far from Imota. The soil in the Imota axis is good for Agriculture. Cheers.

Nice job O.P

At the same time thanks for letting us know that most of the foods we consume are grown with chemical

Sharp shooter 🙂🙂

That's one of my fear: using inorganic fertilizers and herbicides.

For my proposed farm, everything will be purely ORGANIC.

Wood ash
Crushed charcoal

The harvest is plenty but the labourers is so few.

Following with interest. Farming is the way to go. I pray the Lord to help more with the cattle men/herdsmen. The fear of loosing one's farmland to their non-chalant attitude is my biggest fear to go into farming/agriculture business. We have massive farmland in Ijebu. But kidnapping of workers is affecting seriously. God help us.

I went to Sabo and some Ladega. Some parts of Garage too. Couldn't get even though I still believe that there's at least one. They probably don't have an online presence. Mile12 is beyond Ikorodu. Too far. Yes the soil is okay but the road is terrible lol

Thank you.

Don't mind me if I don't believe much in organic insecticides and Fungicides. I used organic to treat my yam setts earlier this year and they got rotten.

The reality is that there is more incentive to use synthetic products unless you want to gamble with your investment as a farmer. We have to be objective and also follow guidelines because one of the reasons we have pesticide residue in food is because some farmers don't follow labels.

P.S. The synthetic agrochemicals are for the pepper.

What part of Ijebu is that, if I may ask? I have heard stories.

This side is relatively safe

I just came back from Sabo market again 😁
Bought a bowl containing cayenne pepper and local tomatoes for #1500.

I'm going to extract some seeds from it to practicalize how to make pepper seeds germinate. Read on Ogbongenet's thread that some pepper seeds can be funny. Better to test run my technique with a cheap seed first pending the arrival of my seeds.

My main mission was to observe the vegetables section. Ugu was plenty as usual but shoko and tete were nowhere to be found. I'm talking about wholesales here. There was a little Ewedu.

I'm beginning to think that although the demand for shoko isn't as much as Ugu, there's still a significant demand for it that even my two plots can't scratch the surface.🤔

Re: My Pepper And Vegetable Farming Journey by Bodex2000(op): 4:30pm On Aug 02
CHANGE OF PLANS!

I was just told that this is not the best time to sink a borehole or dig a well either. I have to wait till next year.

And with the rains terminating sometime in November, this means that if I plant pepper on open field, I'll probably get only a month plus of harvest before I start facing serious challenges. One month of harvesting when 3+ months can be achieved? No

The pepper project will be scaled down to six out of 30 beds. From 1000 to 200 stands of pepper. Not too much sense in hoping for rain at least once a week in the dry season.

Somewhere in Ijebu-East Local Government.

Ash contains antioxidants that prevents rotting of seeds and give nutrients to soil.
Re: My Pepper And Vegetable Farming Journey by Bodex2000(op): 11:49am On Aug 06
The herbicide tried but it wasn't enough to sufficiently dry out the underbrush. Had to engage labor to clear it eventually

Re: My Pepper And Vegetable Farming Journey by Bodex2000(op): 4:30pm On Aug 18
Field is fully cleared and waiting to sort then burn.

I'm going to make a compost pile with some of the cut vegetation.
We're experiencing a dry spell over here, so there is no rush to plant.
In the meantime, I bought some plantain suckers, treated and ready to plant once the rain resumes.
This is because agriculture can be unpredictable and you need to have a backup plan in case things go south

Pegging is next

🤔 Interesting how much I've spent without a seed in the ground yet
