More than 160,000 foreign nationals left South Africa over June and July following widespread anti-immigrant unrest, according to an AFP tally based on figures from the repatriating governments. South Africa has seen weeks of nationwide protests against undocumented foreigners. As anti-migrant groups pressed their demand for immigrants to leave by June 30, citizens of other African countries flocked to consulates and community halls seeking transport home. The largest numbers to leave were from Zimbabwe and Malawi but hundreds more were from countries including Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Mozambique, Nigeria and Uganda. Releasing updated figures on Tuesday, Zimbabwe's cabinet said 108,366 of its people had come home as of July 18, a majority of them self-repatriating. Malawi announced on Monday that more than 46,890 citizens had returned since early June, with the government providing 699 buses for the long journey home. Nearly 2,000 Mozambicans also returned, according to South African government figures. Some crossed the border with help from their government after two Mozambican nationals were killed at the end of May in the southern town of Mossel Bay. Authorities also confirmed the deaths of an Ethiopian and a Malawian in "anti-foreigner sentiment." Nigeria has repatriated around 1,490 nationals, while Ghana has flown home at least 926, according to government figures. South Africa has long been a destination for documented and undocumented African workers searching for work. Zimbabwe - 108,366 Malawi - 46, 890 Mozambique - 2,000 Nigeria - 1,490 Ghana - 926

Dogalmighty17:The honest truth is that most African countries should have strict immigration polices...otherwise the under-skilled illegal migrants will drive down salaries for the under-skilled national citizens. Especially Nigeria. |

osuofia2:The whites were actually running a fake life economy First they were sharing the money to themselves and using it to live a fake life developed country. Second they denied the black majority well funded education, especially vocational and technical education, which meant that industry was badly affected, and meant that at the end of the day, South Africa was unable to take advantage of its large population to be an proper industrial power. The whites laid the foundation for today's mess of their economy. Had there been investment in education and in industrialization at a faster rate, SA would have been an industrialized first world nation ages ago. See why racisim is evil and bad for any nation? |

This mass exodus of over 160,000 people is a painful reminder that there is truly no place like home. Nobody wants to flee to a foreign country just to face hostility and violence, but failing economies force people out. If our home countries were stable and prosperous, mass migration wouldn't be necessary. It is high time we hold our leaders by the balls and completely accountable. We need to demand real development and job creation at home, or kick them out of office. We must build nations our people don’t feel forced to leave. |

Ezeama400:The whites are to blame, denial of good education to the black majority under arphateid created the large mass of unskilled workers around today And to compete with these unskilled workers are hundreds of immigrants from african countries, who further reduce the salaries that the unskilled south fricans make from doing menial jobs. See the resoult. |

Out of more than 500,000 Nigerians in South Africa, only about 1490 have been evacuated or repatriated. That's about just 0.3%. This means more Nigerians are still in South Africa than those who left. |

The unfortunate thing is that the innocent ones are the victims, not the criminals they were after; those are still in the country, and that's normally happens anyhwere anti migrant sentiments degenerate |

If a total of only 160,000 foreigners have been repatriated from South Africa, it means there are still many foreigners in South Africa than expected by now. The anti-migration exercise is therefore considered a complete failure! |

Goke7:My thoughs exactly. I created a thread where I got emotional when Malawians got onto buses in Durban. I knew it was all the good guys. The criminals will never voluntarily hand themselves in for repatriation. Only 2000 Nigerians were repatriated BTW, out of a possible 500,000.
