Cardinal Onaiyekan Not Impartial, He Took Sides In 2023 — Wike by Antoeni(op): 12:00pm On Aug 04
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has questioned the neutrality of Archbishop Emeritus of the Catholic Archdiocese of Abuja, Cardinal John Onaiyekan, insisting that the cleric was not impartial during the 2023 general election.

Wike made the remarks during his media parley on Tuesday while reacting to the controversy that followed Onaiyekan’s comments after a recent meeting between President Bola Tinubu and members of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN).

Following the meeting, the cardinal said in an interview that people around President Tinubu were presenting a “rosy picture” of the country to him and suggested that the President was focused on securing victory in the 2027 presidential election.

The Presidency subsequently faulted Onaiyekan for disclosing details of the closed-door meeting, describing the action as an abuse of privilege.

Responding to the development, Wike argued that public comments from religious leaders should reflect balance, warning that persistent criticism without acknowledging government achievements could be viewed as politically motivated.

“If a religious leader is perceived or seen to be taking a side, which is very clear, it is very difficult for people to begin to see those comments as being helpful,” he said.

“I am aware of the position of Cardinal Onaiyekan; all of us know, it’s not hidden, whom he supports; everybody knows that.”

The FCT minister said while it was appropriate to criticise government where necessary, leaders should also recognise areas where progress had been made.

“It’s not every time you say things are bad; nobody has heard you say government has done this well,” Wike said.

“The point I am trying to make is that, as a leader, commend government when government has done well in certain areas; criticise government and say, look, you have done this well, but you should improve in these other areas.”

He added that if public interventions from a respected figure were consistently negative, the government would naturally conclude that the criticism stemmed from political opposition rather than objectivity.

When reminded that the bishops’ position was not partisan, Wike disagreed, insisting that religious leaders openly aligned with candidates during the last presidential election.

“Don’t tell me they’re not partisan. You know what happened in the 2023 election. People took sides, religious leaders took sides, it was very open,” he said.

“I would be stupid to sit here for anybody to tell me this person is impartial. No. We know ourselves in this country; we know who belongs to where. Who did they support in 2023? It was very obvious,” he added.

Does that invalidate what he said? Did Tinubu not mobilise Imams in the North to support his muslim-muslim ticket in 2023? Why would you blame the Christian clerics for reacting to a polarising ticket from a desperado?

Who takes this dipso and his opinion on National issues serious?

A thug that thinks himself a stateman has no opinion on National discus. He should keep laying low to enjoy the crumbs from the pittance and treasury that Tinupoo opened for him.

Peter Obi dragging the Catholic Church into partisan politics is bad for the church. The church is no longer content with controlling the souls of their victims but now want to control their votes grin

Anyway if Peter Obi thinks he can use the same Church strategy that he used to become governor, to now become President, he will be disappointed like before grin

It's Clear That Wike Was The One who Arranged Those Fake Bishops For Tinubu in 2023

Re: Cardinal Onaiyekan Not Impartial, He Took Sides In 2023 — Wike by 9jatriot(m):
People are mixing up 2 issues. The visit of the bishops is one issue and then the personal opinion of Cardinal Onaiyeken on the other hand. Most of the attacks I have seen are about the way Cardinal Onaiyeken expressed his personal opinion as that of the full college of bishops and the full catholic church.

I think Cardinal Onaiyeken has never hidden his support for his candidate even during the 2023 election. The Catholic bishops did the right thing to have expressed their perception to the president. They are one of the only remaining consciences of truth in Nigeria and the hear from the various priest who are closest to the people.

To be honest, bishops are in my opinion as far from the people as government officials are. It is the priest who are genuinely close to the people, who in turn pass the message to the bishops. FG can also argue that they have the LGA and other agencies who are closer to the people and pass messages to them. Both parties will be right in both scenarios,

However, I believe Cardinal Onaiyeken post meeting interview was his personal views and not what the others asked him to speak about. He is entitled to his position regardless.

Reverend father's and even cardinals can vote and be voted for according to the constitution of the federal republic 🙄

That he saw and acknowledged Peter Obi to be the best candidate in 2023 and (even maybe) decided to PERSONALLY vote for him IS OF NO CONCERN TO ANYBODY angry

After all, did he stand on a pulpit to coerce anyone to vote for anybody? undecided The way APC people reason sometimes is funny sad

Even APC already has a Reverend Father Governor so what's Wike's own problem? angry

The cardinal openly supported another candidate in 2023, what else did you expect him to say again.

Since the cardinal is free to support any candidate in 2023, the Present Government is also right to reject any advice from him, I wondered why Tinubu even grant him audience, someone that doesn't like Tinubu even before 2023, no matter what Tinubu do, he will still complain. We know his Preferred Candidate.

So When Religious Leaders Endorse Politicians it’s “Divine Guidance,” But When They Criticises The Same Politicians it’s Suddenly “Taking Sides.” The Neutrality Rule Only Applies When The Feedback is inconvenient.

We’re all daughters and sons of God nobody is superior period. As a son of God Tinubu is doing fantastically well . He’s a taking a generational bullet. Just like what Fashola did In Oshodi he wasn’t credited until he left office . Same fate awaits Tinubu. All these religious leaders will hide their faces when results becomes too obvious.

For the First time in Nigeria university since 1999 4 yrs has become 4yrs it’s just the beginning. One of the perils of Economic revolution is avoid eating a pregnant mouse when you’re hungry.

Why does APC people always see everything as politics?
Whoever that speaks the reality of Nigerians is assumed by them to be political or working for the opposition.

God forbid this set of people

I agree with Wike! Once you are partisan, how then can you claim neutrality or objectivity?
Your criticism would be seen as wanting to have your preferred candidate win at all cost, while casting the other in a bad light.

Religious leaders must not take sides... No matter how good your preffered candidate is... You must not take sides or tell your members who to vote for.... Same thing with kings.... They must be neutral.

Cardinal Onayeikan and other Bishops were not partial in 2014 when the joined the rest of the nation to accuse GEJ.

No wonder they brought fake bishops to confuse themselves in 2023.

Thankfully the Bishops are not some Imams and Pastors, who think of their pockets.

If Wike was not part of this government, would he by now not be lamenting?

You build infrastructures, making the rich get richer at the expense of the poor. You tax the poor more and borrow to build the infrastructures, forgetting he basics. Reasonable Nigerians only ask for security and food at affordable prices. That’s it all and not the hand outs to the few. Make communities safe, let farmers get back to their lands, let citizens purchase their rice, garri and cassava at easily affordable rates and who will complain. That’s the summary of the message to the President. Thereafter, if you like, build bridges from Lagos to Kano-Abuja-London, etc. Have mercy on people who have been shouting hunger since APC came to power in 2015.
