Yeah, but the problem is, and I am going to be harsh here, most Nigerians do not want to fight poverty by increased production, taxation and removal of subsides for investment to flow in.

Most NIgerians want the government to subsidise everything and to provide everything for them on top of an oil revenue that at best can do that for a nation of less than 10 million people. And trying to do that, along with massive corruption, is why we are in debt and why we cannot take advantage of the new oil boom, because debts must be paid, and why we actually lost fuel subsidy, because we were at the pointof no return by August 2022.

And saying the above means that I am a government supporter apparently, becasuse the same poverty mentailty makes many NIgerians think in terms of their daily bread, not in terms of the long term, and for their mind anyone who is thinking long term has a full belly, and thus time to think in terms of such things.

And that pisses me off. I do not support this government or any other past government, and even look at the oppostion with a lot of cynicism

ALl in all, poverty does not excuse drying stuff on the road. If the farmer cannot form a pressure group and ask for solutions from his LGA, or if state indigienes with the appropriate training cannot fabricate solutions, then we are a lazy people who deserve the tinubu and whatever bad governance we get. An orange tree cannot produce figs.
it is government responsibility on all levels to create infrastructure for its citizens..

the same govt spends billions buying SUVs and other luxury items for themselves instead of providing for its citizens..

the price of the SUVs alone and build an agro-facility in each state in Nigeria..

that you are a supporter of this renewed poverty regime does not mean you can not condemn them..

Yes, it is, but the fact is, in the sane developed countries, government accomplishes this with taxation, sometimes at high rates, higher if you are rich.

Not like Nigeria where a minority pay income tax to federal and state governments, and where as much as 99% of the rich and most of the informal sector workforce do not pay income tax in appreciable amount to the federal government, forcing us to rely on oil money that on a good day is not enough for 20 million people.

Also, Nigeria relies on oil, most sane countries that are developed rely on productivity..especially industrial productivity.

That's why countries like Canada and even Spain have healthcare budgets that are triple our total national budget. Doing the above things enables them to rake in billions of dollars by the hundreds. Nigeria just tries and has been trying to do free stuff, which gets us into more debt, and also which makes it even worse to raise enough money to pay for decent projects, except what the loans tell us to do.

If you vote a government that does what you want them to do, the debt would grow to 500 trillion naira in four years. Because what you want is not possible without massive borrowing. Fighting corruption which has to be done won't increase the income, it would just prevent leakages.

the government can forgo buying SUVs for 5 years and instead use the funds to build agro-facilities in all states over the same 5 years.

they do not need taxes and taxation to build anything.. they only need to stop spending on liabilities and materialism and spend on productivity..

stop defending rubbish and use your brain well...

Well, for decades our budget deficit has been very large because oil money alone , which is our main source of income, is not enough to fund it.

This year's budget was funded by loans because last year, government expected, for revenue purposes, oil to be above 74 dollars for the year. LOL...it no happen. So, borrowing commenced. Leading to the budget deficit

Now that's not abnormal in itself, all countries have that. but sane countries fund the budget by raising taxes. Nigeria has a very low tax to gdp ratio, which is lower than many African countries even.

That means that our borrowing will go up unless we get more of the gdp taxed.

If you think the way you think, you are indirectly supporting tinubu's borrowing. Thus, you got no right to complain about it.
stop defending rubbish and use your brain well...
I don't recall abusing you, my good sir.

Well, if we want to reduce our budget deficit, taxes would be the way forward. Selling raw materials is not the way because we do not set their prices.

Also, our budget, even if the money was not spent on frivolities like yatcht and suv and so forth, and if excess spending on government things was cut, is not enough for a nation of 237 million people. LIke now, we need something like 33 trillion out of our budget of 55 trillion to guarantee quality healthcare. Just to give you an example.

Mr Man can't you mind ur own business?

Drying of cassava on that road was in existence for decades to enable their own business, so becos government just rehabilitate the road someone parents business should stop abii,

There is actually nothing bad here, this does not stop motorist from plying the road, it doesn't disturb anything and even can not in anyway spoil the road, so what's the fuss all about. Is this overzealousness or idleness, there are serious crimes being committed out there but you're here reporting an innocent person sundrying cassava

These roads run through villages and farms of the local people. These are their community corridors and as far as the roads are not in use, you cannot stop the villagers from using it for their insignificant local needs. How does a local farmer drying cassava on the road affect the road's integrity in any way? and once the roads are put in service, the villagers will stop the practice. This is a very irrelevant and trivial observation.

it can lead to diseases like lassa fever, typhoid e.t.c in the rural areas like the person below said...

The issue is not really about the road being new, it's about why we still dry edible stuff on the road. This is one of the reasons I hate yam and cassava flour bought in the open market. There are deadly diseases claiming lives because of this dirty practice. You go soak garri like this come see animal poo inside....na lassa fever we dey play with.

countries fund their budget through PPP and ownership.. Taxes is just bonus and extortion for the government no matter the country..

Nobody said the FG should not have ownership of companies that can make billions of $$$$..

if FG runs NITEL well and has its own network it can make over $10billion dollars annually.

if FG runs NNPC well and has operational refineries then it can make over $40 billion annually

if FG runs Cocoa export and has processing facilities it can make over $30 billion annually
e.t.c.

the FG just needs to invest in ownership and processing facilities and it will make more than enough money for development and stealing...

Not quite true. Tax forms a major part of government revenues. IN Germany it forms nearly half of government revenues.

You have a very flawed idea of government revenues.

As for your point , this is the response

Countries do not fund their national budgets through Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) or state ownership. Instead, national budgets are funded by tax revenues, government borrowing, and fees. PPPs and state ownership are mechanisms for financing or delivering specific infrastructure projects, not sources of general budget revenue
As you can see, your solution won't work.

ON NITEL and NNPC, government ran the companies into the ground by forcing them to offer subsidised services, which hindered their ability to improve service.

The problem was that the things needed to provide good enough refineries and phone services...are made abroad. And Nigeria does not control their prices. So, subsidies meant that these companies could not make enough money to pay for improvements, because they just did not have the resources.

Meanwhile, Obasanjo let GSM companies like MTN and Airtel charge whatever prices they want....and the result was that they made enough profits to provide services for the poor, something that NITEL could never do.

We already own cocoa, anyways...it's our fifth largest revenue generator.

the FG just needs to invest in ownership and processing facilities and it will make more than enough money for development and stealing...
And taxes, and revenue. Even if the FG invested in ownership, it has to allow the facilites operate at a profit, not subsidised prices, to get their monies worth, and even then, the revenue won't be enough for a nation of our size.

Why use a single case and not general. Government think in terms of public well being not individuals. If the government sees that the public will benefit frommthe cassava dryer, they should provide it by all means but not for an individual or very few members of the public.

tax is a part of revenue and not major revenue..

major revenue comes from ownership..

you are making it that you have never owned or started a business in your life..

read the example below and gain knowledge:

If you own business A

and your business A makes ₦80b annually in profits

Govt takes 30% of ₦80b in taxes that business A makes which is ₦24b.

Your business A ₦80b - ₦24b that govt takes is ₦56b.

Your net profit is ₦56b.

Between your business A ₦56b and govt taxes of ₦24b who still has more money between you and the government?.

so from the example above, it means that if government focuses on taxes alone then private companies in the country can be richer than the government.

it also means that relying on taxes means the government is not using their brains and have abdicated their responsibilities to the people.

which means the government is now an extortion cartel and no longer a government..

This is common sense. However, if you are you unable to agree then at least accept that "duties" are a function of laws and no law says the government must provide you with tools for your business. police do not have to patrol every inch of every road once there is CCTV and facial recognition everywhere.. the man would be detected and his house address will be visited by the police and he will be arrested or they would see the man on CCTV and send police to arrest him..
