Suntrust Bank Allegedly Loses Over ₦800 Million To Hackers by THEMOMENTONLINE(op): 5:34pm On Aug 06
SunTrust Bank allegedly loses over N800m to hackers
...as DSS arraigns suspected hacker

One of the nation’s commercial banks, SunTrust Bank Plc, is currently battling to recover over N800 million allegedly lost to hackers when its server was hacked between 2023 and 2026.

Meanwhile, the operatives of the Department of State Security (DSS) have arraigned one of the alleged hackers, a 47-year-old man, Ugochukwu Eze, before a Federal High Court, Lagos, over the illicit and heinous financial crimes.

Ugochukwu, also known as Amazon, was arraigned today before the court presided over for allegedly hacking into the server of Suntrust Bank Plc, and fraudulently removing and diverting over N800 million into several accounts

DSS lawyer, M. Bajela Esq, informed the court that the defendant and others now at large, between 2023 and 2026, conspired among themselves and unlawfully and seriously hindered the function of Suntrust Bank Plc’s computer system (server) and, in the process, fraudulently diverted over N800 million belonging to the bank.

The defendant was also alleged to have concealed and transferred various sums of money traced to the unlawful cyber-attacks on some financial institutions.

He was also accused of causing unauthorised access to critical National Financial information infrastructure.

The alleged offences of the defendant, according to the prosecutor, contravened sections 5; 6(1) and 8 of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention etc) Act, 2024. And Sections 10, 20 and 18(2)(D) of the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the allegations.

Based on his plea of not guilty, the prosecutor asked the court for a trial date, and prayed the court to remand the defendant pending the determination of the charge.

However, the defendant’s lawyer, E. Afrogha, informed the court that she has filed her client’s bail application. Adding that her client has been in the DSS custody for over a month.

But the prosecutor informed the court that he has not been served with the bail application. And that his witnesses are available.

Based on the counsel’s submissions, the presiding judge, Justice Friday Ogazi, adjourned the matter to August 24, for hearing of the bail application.

The judge also ordered that the defendant be remanded in the custody of the Nigerian Correctional Services NCoS pending the hearing aid of the bail application.

One of the counts against the defendant reads: “That you UGOCHUKWU EZE (AKA AMAZON) (M) (47 YEARS) sometime between 2023 and 2026 in Lagos, and other places within the jurisdiction of this honourable court, unlawfully seriously hindered the function of Suntrust Bank Plc’s computer system, and in the process fraudulently diverted over N800, 000,000.00 (Eight Hundred Million Naira) belonging to the said Suntrust Bank Plc, thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 8 of the cybercrime (prohibition, prevention etc.) Act, 2024.”

Banks fail oversease too...remember how two major US banks failed about 2 years ago?

The greek-Nigerian player Giannis Adetokumbo when he signed a contract to play in the NBA...he kept his first salary in eight different banks. Some people, including a expert financial adviser thought he was 'craze'. Several years later when the banks were collapsing in the USA...dem come realize him be wise man.

That;s why you got to get your senator to pass the requisite law , by contacting and pressuring him to do so.

..and they allowed the new go out? I can't put money in this type of bank regardless of any government issuance.

There was a time Zenith lost money and started billing customers for 2 or 3 years.

If you have 1 million customers. Just bill everyone ₦50 for bullshit fees and charges. Do it 16 times and you have your ₦800m

Well, there are mechanisims to restore the money to the bank.
EFCC would step in and get the money back. They have done it before...including a famous case involving a Brazillian bank.

Also, NDIC , should the bank collapse as a result of the hack, would step in and pay back customers

For example, if you had 10 milliion naira with that bank, and it failed, NDIC would pay you 5 million guaranteed, and then sell off the banks assets to raise funds to pay the remainder of your money to you and to other affected similar depositors.

So calm down. cheesy

At some point the news would have come out.

Also, if the bank collapsed, NDIC has your back covered if you kept money there.

And the money would be recovered. That is the main job of EFCC, their one function the news media don't talk about because it is boring, and not exciting.

Well, this is what an NDIC representative said vide Businessday

Sunday noted that the NDIC has made significant progress in strengthening depositor protection, particularly through increased deposit insurance coverage. Currently, the NDIC insures depositors of Deposit Money Banks (DMBs), Mobile Money Operators (MMOs), and Non-Interest Banks (NIBs) up to ₦5,000,000 per depositor, while for Payment Service Banks (PSBs), Microfinance Banks (MFBs), and Primary Mortgage Banks (PMBs), the coverage is ₦2,000,000 per depositor.

“With this expanded coverage, approximately 99 percent of depositors are fully protected, demonstrating our unwavering commitment to deepening public confidence in the banking system,” he said.

He further explained that in the rare event of a bank failure, depositors whose balances exceed the insured limit would first receive payment up to the insured amount, while the remaining balance would be paid through liquidation dividends from the proceeds of the failed bank’s assets, ensuring fairness and transparency

Well, my pa has kept his money in one of Nigeria's older banks for over 50 years now...and nothing has happened to his money at all at all.

His wife also keeps her monies in Union Bank. I mention the name because Union bank at one time was tottering. Her money has not missed at all either.
