DC was going strong at that time following the commercial and critical success of most of their various project including live action, animation etc (of course excluding Green Lantern 😂)


The dark knight rises (2012) was released to positive reception and riding on the hype, Man of Steel (2013) was released. Many people including myself was quick to point out how the tone and cinematic of the film did not represent the character of superman but of course it was only the first film.


Soon Batman vs Superman (2016) was released, it was highly anticipated and people were hyped to see the big 3 (Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman) together for the first time in live action) so it had the biggest superhero box office opening at that time ($422.5 million dollars) which was like half of its box office but lo and behond the ticket sales dropped drastically at the second week and dropped so badly that it couldn't gross a billion dollar, things that captain america and other big project did with ease.


Now mind you, Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman are the face of DC and the most popular superhero characters in the world and lord snydra somehow was able to deliver such a bad and distasteful film that even the popularity of the characters could not save it.


And that set the tone for DCEU downfall

It would have made more had they released the extended version in theatres. The jumbled mess turned everyone off. I'm sure the decision was made hastily due to fear of not making money from a 3 hour cut.

And it appears Warner Bros still haven't learnt anything with the release of Supergirl which allegedly had editing issues as well. The Supergirl film could have worked well with a stronger villain, explored more about Krypton, Kara and her trying to fit in to a world that was alien to her.

There was never anything special about that movie that made it demand 3hrs. If it was half decent and didn't stray so far away from Superman and especially Batman's characterization then it would have crossed a billion. The simple truth is that Zach Snyder does not give two shïts about comics and tried to turn them into his own ideas the problem was that he ain't Christopher Nolan and he ain't no damn Matt Reeves.

BvS remains the only movie to gross 400m in its first weekend and still never pass 900m in total. Smuag and his cohorts should come and deny it.
