As we keep improving the breed of our animals for a better result in order to allow our farmers to have a good breeds on their farms and smile to market earlier.
The picture below is the second generation (F2) of our Kalawad goat and most people will mistake it for Pure Kalahari. Improving our local breeds is our priority.

I almost mistook it for a pure Kalahari..
This is very commendable.

I know it's been a while since I last posted here, and I really appreciate everyone who reached out to me and noticed I was gone. The page isn’t dead, life just got a little busier than expected, and I had to step back for a bit.

I appreciate your patience, and I’m excited to reconnect with everyone.

The next sales of the crossbreeds is in December.

At Osode Farm, we believe the future of livestock farming lies in embracing modern technology. Technology tools like artificial insemination (AI) and embryo transfer (ET) allow farmers to improve genetics, boost productivity, and build stronger, healthier herds. With AI, superior traits from proven sires can be spread quickly across the flock, while ET makes it possible to multiply the offspring of our best does in a shorter time.

We are proud to share that the first embryo transfer on goats in Nigeria and West Africa was successfully carried out on our farm; a milestone that not only marks progress for us but also sets a foundation for more innovative breeding practices in our community. By adopting these technologies, we are ensuring sustainable growth and better returns for livestock farmers.

Thanks for the observation. It was a typographical error.
I mean WAD breed, not WAS

I’ve been away from this space for a while, but definitely not away from the work! 😊 I’ve been busy contributing my quota to food security in Nigeria, especially through animal production. 🇳🇬🐐

It’s no longer news that Nigeria recorded its first successful goat embryo transfer, with the kids doing excellently well. We’ve also carried out another round of artificial insemination in Nigerian Dwarf and Red Sokoto goats using Kiko goat semen from the USA. 🐐🧬

I’ll be sharing more about the Kiko goat breed, its production potential, and how it compares with other exotic goat breeds (such Kalahari red, Savanna goat, and Boer goat) being raised in Nigeria.
It’s exciting to see animal genetic improvement gaining momentum in goat and sheep production.

There’s so much potential ahead! 🚀🐐🐑

I gather that these exotic breeds especially boer are very delicate and highly prone to internal parasites (like worms), how do the Kalahari x WAD crosses in terms of this? Are they as hardy as the WAD? Can they be raised without much medication, deworming and spraying as is possible with WAD goats?

Kalahari x WAD goats are not as hardy as the WAD. Normally in Kalahari x WAD F1 goats, pure Kalahari red contributed 50% of the genes, while the WAD contributed 50% of her genes.
So, the hardiness of the Kalahari x WaD can't be compared with the WAD, although the Kalahari x WAD has a higher potential in terms of growth rate, body conformation, and frame than the WAD due to the contribution of the pure Kalahari red to their gene.
However, the Kalahari x WAD is more hardy than the pure Kalahari in terms of resistance to some nematodes.
Yes, they can be raised without much medication or spraying, provided their environment and nutrition are in a good state and adequately met.

What about dystocia when crossing kalahari buck to a WAD doe? Is that a big problem in your farm?
