The FGN must be able to get the civil defence or some other guards to watch over national infrastructure like these before those "iron condemn" miscreants pilfer all the iron reinforcements! undecided

Nigeria’s ‘Biggest Economic Threat’ Is Unemployment, But Data to Guide Policy Missing for 14 Months

Nigeria’s top economic risk for the 2026 economic year is unemployment but the country has not published any official labour statistics to measure its rate since November 2024, FIJ has found.

On Wednesday, the World Economic Forum’s Global Risks Report identified lack of economic opportunity and unemployment as Nigeria’s leading threat for the 2026 economic year.

The report also identified inadequate public services, economic downturn, inequality, and crime as the next four threats to economic stability in 2026.

Unemployment is serious enough for international observers but the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has not released Nigeria’s Labour Force statistics, however controversial, since the second quarter of 2024.

SILENCE SINCE METHODOLOGY REDESIGN
The NBS has been in the crossfire before for publishing Labour Force Data late in 2023 and 2024. In 2024, the bureau attributed the delay to an overhaul of its survey methodology.

At the time, NBS said it wanted to align Nigeria’s labour statistics with international best practices and ensure data quality and sustainability.

But the resulting data caused chaos. According to the NFLS published at that time (q1, 2024), only about 4.3% of Nigerians were unemployed. The data introduced new types of labour categorisation in the report.

Per the new method, anyone who works even minimal hours in a week is considered “employed”. The reliability of official figures was questioned by labour unions, business groups and even economists.

The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), for instance, described the reported employment statistics as unrealistic. Chris Onyeka, the NLC’s National Assistant General Secretary, called the report a “voodoo document” and a “fabrication designed to mislead the public”.

Similarly, Gabriel Idahosa, President of the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI), said, “The technical improvement in the employment rate is more of a way that employment is now calculated; but the reality is that the economy is not looking like an economy where unemployment is significantly reducing.”

Since then, the NBS has not made any attempt to publish labour data.

The need to upgrade infrastructure on the Peninsula is without a doubt necessary. Whether this is a state government or Federal government responsibility is a debate for another day.

But as for the coastal road, that is a complete mindless waste of resources. It is a typical white elephant projects. It will add scant little to Nigeria and cost an arm and a leg to maintain in th coming years. That will be clear very soon.

And the fact that all traffic from and along the Atlantic coast will be diverted through the Peninsula....well I leave that to you folks to imagine....
Have you been on the coastal road, have you seen the design layout, if you have i don't understand what your angst is all about.......lekki area is an emerging industrial, petrol chemical and tourism hub with vast real estate developments scattered all over the place......the population keeps growing both human and vehicular......I remember that axis just 7 years ago and how much its grown right now,its now a continuous span of development from vi all the way to ibeju, everywhere is built up,even epe is growing at enormous speed

Do you expect The entire stretch to rely only on the lekki epe corridor.......the volume of trucks accessing the DRL and LFTZ runs into thousands daily......the coastal road serves as a new artery to divert traffic from the city center to the outer road thereby reducing pressure on that axis.

The potential for the forgotten southern axis of the other 8 states cant be over stated.......the ogun water side axis is now getting attention, the ondo deep seaport is now gaining momentum and the olokoka gas project and the entire ilaje okiti pupa axis are being considered for their tourism potential, hope you know the coastal road makes those places only about an hour and a half drive from lagos......PH round trip will be possible in a day and akwa cross axis won't be a whole day away anymore......roads bring development and boost GDP,I did be surprised if tou would argue with that.

Would there be more, or would there be less iron condemn miscreants if Tinubu made good on his promise to create 50 million jobs, by increasing production for exports and reducing imports, on his way to trillion dollar economy?

Majesty2:
The APC Presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has revealed how he will drive the economy of the country, strengthen the Naira and making the country "import less" while "exporting more".

Would we have all these agbero miscreants if the master strategist gave a good example, as Lagos landlord, of using the people's money to employ enough teachers and other workers to make schools free for all children and water available to all houses?

The federal government is not responsible for water supply in cities and towns. This is the responsibility of states.

It is by far better than Enugu.

500 gallons of water go for N20k. Multiply by 4 in a month, that's N80k. By extrapolation, that's N960k in a year on water alone. Why? Because the governor believes that clean and accessible water is the least of his worries. Yet they prance around like Enugu is Abuja even though the red muddy soil will have residents looking like they went tomb-raiding at night.

But then, considering where it was before Peter Mba, one can understand the accolades being that he moved the town from 16th Century to 17th Century but not anywhere near 20th Century. 21st Century is a stretch. EEDC? The worst of all.

The Permanent Secretary, Office of Drainage Services and Water Resources in Lagos State, Mahmood Adegbite, has said that people drilling borehole in the Lekki axis of the state is probably drinking ‘’shit water.”

While speaking at a stakeholders meeting in the state recently, Adegbite noted that contaminated boreholes in Lekki pose health risk and added that treatment of waste water would eradicate any form of disease that may arise from it.

He said, “On waste water treatment, I will say that everyone digging borehole within the Lekki axis is probably drinking what I will call ‘shit water.’

Obidients have better things doing than that.

However, have you told people that Eleko has not seen electricity for nearly 20 years?

Now, between electricity and flyover, which one do you think would have made the most impact on Eleko indigenes and residents?
You see the puerile lies you guys regurgitate and spread amongst yourselves out of hate......which Eleko are you talking about.....are you aware funke akindele stays in eleko? You mean to say she doesn't have power at home.

Wait till aboki comes to chisel out all the supporting steel coils in the pillars in a few months time. Those bastards need to be shot. Typical animals just like their father buhari
AnonPoet:
Omo, this Federal Administration really came prepared to develop the road networks across the peninsula.

This few-seconds clip doesn’t do justice to the sheer volume of work going on along the entire Eleko axis at all, let alone the whole stretch of the peninsula.

Please, Just help us touch the Mainland too with new Flyovers. 😅

More of this, please! 🥳👏

Only a small and myopic mind would see the coastal road as a waste of resources. Have you been to that road recently? Do you even have an idea of the number of jobs that will be provided by that opening? Do you have an idea of the impact of the rise of the economic district and the number of states it will open up for businesses and accessibility? People like you said more than this when the Third Mainland Bridge was being built, and I'm sure you have made use of the bridge more than 100 times in your lifetime.

Pls when it is completed, don't ever think of passing the road, and tell your generation to avoid it too because it is a waste (according to you).
