Oladimeji Fabiyi, Deputy National Financial Secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has declared that he would withdraw from the proposed opposition coalition if Peter Obi is chosen as its presidential candidate for the 2027 election.

Fabiyi made the declaration during an interview published on the official YouTube channel of Trust TV on Friday, August 14, 2026, while discussing efforts by opposition parties to form a united political platform ahead of the next presidential election.

The ADC chieftain was questioned about the possible outcome of the coalition’s negotiations, particularly what his position would be if the parties eventually settled on Obi as their consensus candidate.

Responding directly, Fabiyi said, “I would rather pull out. I will not work for him, I will not support him, and I will not vote for him.”

His comments highlight the political differences that could complicate attempts by opposition parties to establish a common front against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.

Although Fabiyi has expressed support for greater cooperation among opposition parties, his latest position suggests that such cooperation may have limits for some members, particularly over the identity of the presidential candidate.

The proposed coalition has attracted attention as opposition figures explore ways of combining their political strength ahead of the 2027 presidential contest. The process, however, involves parties and politicians with different interests, ambitions and preferred candidates.

Fabiyi’s statement indicates that the selection of a consensus candidate could become one of the most sensitive issues in the negotiations.
