LAGOS INSPECTS OJO, SOMOLU GENERAL HOSPITALS AS PROJECTS ADVANCE

Lagos State Government has intensified monitoring of major healthcare infrastructure projects as the 280-bed Ojo General Hospital approaches completion, while construction of the new 180-bed Somolu General Hospital progresses, with the latter planned as a specialised centre for head and neck-related medical services.

The Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, who disclosed this during an inspection tour of the two projects on Friday, said the Ojo facility was about 85 per cent complete and was expected to be ready for commissioning by the end of 2026 or the first quarter of 2027.

Abayomi, who was accompanied by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Works, Dr. (Engr.) Adekunle Olayinka, said the Ojo project had entered the finishing stage, with high-tech medical equipment and furniture already ordered. He added that inspection visits would now be conducted more frequently to ensure that the facility was completed to the required standards.

At Somolu, the Commissioner inspected the foundation of the new seven-floor, 180-bed multi-specialist hospital, which is currently about 15 per cent complete. The project is being developed on the former Somolu Local Government headquarters site after the council administration relocated to another facility.

Abayomi explained that the decision to build a new hospital rather than expand the existing facility was driven by the size of its catchment population and the limitations of the current 60-bed hospital. He said the existing Somolu General Hospital would continue to provide uninterrupted clinical services while construction of the new facility proceeds.

The Commissioner disclosed that the new Somolu hospital would be designated as a Head and Neck Super-Specialty Centre, offering Plastic Surgery, Maxillofacial Surgery, Ear, Nose and Throat, Ophthalmology and Dentistry alongside the core specialities of Medicine, Surgery, Paediatrics and Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

He said the specialisation plan formed part of the State’s broader strategy to transform its general hospitals into centres of excellence with designated super-specialities. According to him, the approach would expand access to advanced medical interventions and reduce the need for Lagos residents to seek specialised treatment outside the country.

He added that the new hospital designs were incorporating renewable energy, low-carbon technologies, improved patient and staff movement, water catchment, sewage management and infection prevention and control measures. These, he said, were intended to make the facilities more sustainable, energy-efficient and safer for patients.

The Commissioner disclosed that about 107,000 registered patients currently access services at the Somolu facility, while its wider catchment area is estimated at between five and 10 million people, underscoring the need for a larger and more modern hospital.

Also speaking, Olayinka said the inspection at Ojo confirmed the project’s reported 85 per cent completion, while the government’s quality assurance and control teams had identified and communicated minor areas requiring correction by the contractor.

He said the solar installation at Ojo met the required specifications and would provide an important alternative power source when the hospital becomes operational. Olayinka added that the Somolu project, which had experienced some initial challenges, was now progressing after the identified issues were resolved.

According to him, the Somolu hospital is expected to be completed by the third quarter of 2027, with modern engineering, green technologies, carbon-reduction measures and solar power incorporated into its ddesign.

This is great and commendable. There is a joker, who wants to be President of Nigeria under a non-existent party called NDC that could not boast of one tenth of this throughout his 8 years tenure as a governor. This is part of the enduring legacy of PBAT.

The enduring legacy of president aBAT in Lagos, is that of reckless looting of the 100 times budget growth to N4.2 trillion without employing well paid workers to make water available to all households.

Can Tinubu and his successors of the past 27 years boast of one tenth of what UPN progressive governor Jakande did in just four years before Buhari jailed him for corruption, after his only successful coup against democratic institutions at local, state and federal levels 43 years ago?

Splashme:
The first civilian governor of Lagos State, Alhaji Lateef Jakande, on Tuesday, said that the cancellation of the Lagos metroline project in 1985 was a major mistake and disservice to many Nigerians.

Jakande spoke in Lagos during the launch of a book which chronicled his life in politics and journalism.

The book, entitled, ‘Jakande: Leadership in Action’ is written by Dr. Bola Olaosebikan, who told the audience at the event that the All Progressives Congress presidential candidate, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), was not responsible for the cancellation of the project.

Jakande said, “Reflecting on the metroline project, I think it is a major disservice to many Nigerians. Imagine how many people would have benefitted. It would have made life easier and changed the face of transport in Lagos. Whoever cancelled it or gave the advice towards its cancellation didn’t do right.”

The former governor asked Nigerians not to vote for unserious leaders in the coming polls, saying the elections presented Nigerians with a good opportunity that should not be squandered.

Expressing the hope that Nigeria would soon overcome its developmental challenges, Jakande said hope would be actualised faster if credible people emerged as leaders in the next dispensation.

He said, “This book comes at a very auspicious time in Nigeria’s history as we need leaders who can act. We need leaders who would not compromise the standards of good governance. God has blessed this nation the most in Africa, although we have not reached where we should be; with the right leaders, Nigeria would overcome its challenges.”

Mega water supply for a mega city

August 5, 2014

WATER is central to human existence.A populous city cannot do without this all-important commodity. To ensure free-flow of water in the mega city, the Lagos State Government has unveiled first phase of the Adiyan Water Works, with a capacity for 70million gallon of water.

Work on the second phase which also has a capacity for 70million gallon of water delay begun. Other water works in Eti-Osa, has to expand among others, have a combined capacity of 593million gallons of water by 2020 when the Lagos population suspected the hit 29million.

If met, the target would give a surplus of 12 million gallons of water.
@
@
Lagos State Water Corporation (LASWC) Group Managing Director Mr. Shayo Holloway, said the plan was aimed at meeting the water needs of the emerging mega-city, especially the first phase, which has 15 additional mini-water works, with only five yet to be inaugurated.

According to Holloway, the expansion is influenced by population.
@
@
The corporation, however, urged consumers to tap into its mains instead of patronising water vendors. “Although we realised that there are some areas that are yet to be connected, by the end of 2015, when we must have fully completed the water mains expansion project, most of the areas that are yet to be connected would have the opportunity,” Holloway added.
@
@
Fashola said the water projects, which the administration was implementing, would take the state to the level of sustainable and efficient water supply.

“Currently, there are reticulation contracts that have been issued, including pipe networks and pipelines being laid across the state to receive the supply of water when it is done. The planned expansion at Adiyan, which has been on the drawing board since the 1970s, is expected to give the state 70 million gallons of water per day which is the combined capacity of all the mini water works and micro water works,” the governor said, adding that the Adiyan expansion would help the government to serve areas, such as Iju, Agege, Mushin and Ilupeju.

Lagos has now crossed the 3 Trillion Naira annual budget mark. Crossed 2 Trillion in 2024.

Memory Lane: the first full-year Lagos State budget (Year 2000) in the 4th Republic was in the region of 40-something billion Naira. And it was described as “unprecedented” back then.

Fashola to Nigerians: 'If You Want to Have Stable Electricity Supply, Vote PDP Out in 2015'

Jul 11, 2014.

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, while marking his 2,600 days in office at an elaborate ceremony held at the Blue Roof of the Lagos Television premises, has said voting out the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from power in next year’s general election is the only way the country can have stable electricity.

According to The Nation, Fashola said electricity crisis in the country is caused by lack of ideas and insincerity of purpose on the part of Federal Government.

"Yes I agree with you that it is possible to generate electricity and to make sure that everybody in this country has electricity, we have to do the right thing. But you know what, the only way that you and I will have electricity in this country will be to vote out the PDP.
