Sir: In a workshop in Nnewi, a young man with an HND in Mechanical Engineering is rebuilding a 40-ton generator that powers an entire estate. In a bank in Lagos, a BSc holder with no internship is being trained for three months to use Excel. Tell me, which one does Nigeria need more urgently? The answer reveals the lie we have lived with for 40 years: that a university degree is superior and an HND is second classhttps://thenationonlineng.net/hnd-deserves-equal-respect/amp/

Technologists want to be equal to engineers so badly. First off, what Bsc holder doesn't know how to use excel. The same excel university trained engineers have been using since 200 level on stupid assignments and 1 unit courses (SWEP) any one that doesn't know how excel works should be returned to his university There is a reason University trained Engineers are not rebuilding 40-ton generators and it is because they are trained to assess the building's needs, design their power options and make sure the HND graduate does not just build anything. Or in a company, a makeshift(note I said makeshift) flywheel is needed and you want the guys in the workshop to just turn on the lathe machine, load the Teflon and start cutting without an engineer designing the wheel itself, giving the required measurements of troughs and teeth, clearance and width This weird thinking that people with Bng don't know as much as those with HNDs is like saying you should skip architects and just give your building to builders directly. A house will be built but will the house collapse? Will it pass structural tests, will it be livable? There is a reason there are cadres and an HND Graduate can up his level and get the required certifications too same way university trained engineers are encouraged to get technical knowhows. Do I agree on the pay, people should be paid based on their work rate? Yes Yes, Polytechnics should be better funded As for the masters route, I don't even have a thought about it |

Nigeria is a fail country like the leaders who rule us. If I my say buhari who rule the highest office in Nigeria, did he have certificate up to HND. Yet he rule professor and grate noble men. Nigeria is just a failed nation I swear. |

This topic has been in existence since 1947 wheb YABATEXH was founded. All talks no actions. Come on our Naija politicians. Make it happen. DO the TALK! |

First, equal pay for equal work in public service. |
| Re: HND Deserves Equal Respect - Nanna Gift Nimkur by MANNABBQGRILLS: 5:56am On Aug 19 |
Second : let HND holders proceed directly to Master’s degree without the PGD toll gate. Let merit, not route, determine how far you go. |

DIFFERENCES : Polytechnics and universities in Nigeria are both higher education schools, But polytechnics focus on practical technical skills while universities focus on broad academic theory. Key DifferencesFocus: Polytechnics give hands-on vocational training for immediate jobs. Universities teach deep academic concepts, lectures, and research.Degrees: Polytechnics traditionally give National Diplomas (ND) and Higher National Diplomas (HND). Universities award Bachelor's degrees. Reforms: The Federal Ministry of Education announced plans to let polytechnics award degrees and remove job limits tied to HND certificates. We hope tbe FG do as they said. We Rise ✔️ |

Let all their instructors and Lecturers also learn how to go for masters and PhD and do them, then publish to become professors before we start talking about giving them equal respect |

Mynd44:You've said it all sir People should be paid based on their work rate And polytechnic should be better founded But for me I've been to the Polytechnic from ND to HND with a very good grades but my first day in the university made me come into the conclusion that these institutions are miles if not world apart They can't be or rather they shouldn't be on thesame level at all Not to mention allow an HND holder to proceed directly to MSC like as how now even with Pgd self they still can't measure up until an HND holder go for first degree they can't be measured up to a degree holder because I've been there before and I know what it take to obtain BSc no be small effort |

This stale argument again? There are different types and cadre of qualifications. If you want a B.Sc, go to a University. If you want to be technically sound, go to polytechnic. While applying into a polytechnic, you already know you'd be earning HND. So what's the fuss about?! |
| Re: HND Deserves Equal Respect - Nanna Gift Nimkur by jimoholuyemi3(m): 6:18am On Aug 19 |
Amotolongbo:Thanks for that observation most of our polytechnic Lecturers that we're employed years ago with BSc how many of them have upgraded themselves to the level of MSC not to mention PhD many do not even bother themselves they remain comfortable Only for some to wake up early this year when this new education minister said those with BSc in academic in polytechnic should not be assigned with project students or rather be dropped to administrative level that's when some that has been lecturing since year of mungo Park now wake up to go for MSc and yet we want the polytechnic to measure up to university level and proceed directly for MSc dey play |
| Re: HND Deserves Equal Respect - Nanna Gift Nimkur by Chukwudi4naija(m): 6:20am On Aug 19 |
Why complain when you can relief yourself the stress of the inequality and obtain B.Sc. You know the situation in Nigeria and you couldn't beat the admission requirements for University education, but later start crying foul. It's what it's. |
| Re: HND Deserves Equal Respect - Nanna Gift Nimkur by AcadaWriter0: 6:23am On Aug 19 |
Simply stating the case for HND’s continued value. No need for further justification. |
| Re: HND Deserves Equal Respect - Nanna Gift Nimkur by Tenses: 6:24am On Aug 19 |
Mynd44:Polytechnic are always comparing themselves with the universities and I think that's their undoing. They should work at their own speed, fight for what they think is right by demanding 🫴 it and not by pointing comparison fingers. The college of educations has done exactly that. The colleges now issue out B.Sc. certificates and recently their lecturers can become professors. All these were achieved not by comparing themselves with the universities but through strategic negotiations and compromise when needed. |

HND and Degree are clearly a different thing and a different path..Without asking, it's not same. Why the comparison. Degree is Degree and HND is HND. |

You want someone who studied pharmaceutical technology to be equal to a pharmacist? There is a reason they don’t study engineering in polytechnics Yes they don’t study engineering in polytechnic Engineering and engineering technology are not the same |
| Re: HND Deserves Equal Respect - Nanna Gift Nimkur by babakb: 6:44am On Aug 19 |
Cmeo:Charity begins at home. Ask the Polytechnics to start employing HND graduates as full time lecturers then we can have a balanced argument. The management of Polytechnics can't continue to discriminate against it's graduates by employing only university graduates as lecturers while you expect others to respect them. Go and check, your guy constructing that generator was lectured through out by university graduates. |
| Re: HND Deserves Equal Respect - Nanna Gift Nimkur by saintmm(m): 6:45am On Aug 19 |
Why we are still discussing this is because our education is examination and certificate based and not capacity based. That's the identity of a lazy, employment driven, slavish and underdeveloped society. Let's stop rating intelligence only by the numbers of As a student got in WAEC and introduce multidimensional intelligence grading system, you will discover we never needed this much universities, we badly need more quality technical schools, more quality polytechnics , then, availability of electricity and capital, there will be reduction in poverty, reduction in unemployment, mass production of small scale industry etc. Our leaders know this, but they'll not do it because what they are doing now is the only way to sustain their form grip on the masses. I.e making them poor and dependent.. We can get this when we choose to take back out society for rebuilding, then we will recover our country. |

| Re: HND Deserves Equal Respect - Nanna Gift Nimkur by Helinuse: 7:38am On Aug 19 |
Are we still on this? After you are done, based on the very non-sequitur reasons that are being used for the "equality," it will simply mean that a Diploma is equal to an HND as well, and a WAEC is equal to a Master's. |

[quote author= post=140377928]Second : let HND holders proceed directly to Master’s degree without the PGD toll gate.
