The internet is current on fire following an incident that happened earlier involving Tony Elumelu and a young lady who called him by name.
In the video that has gone viral, she wanted to ask the UBA chairman some questions and called him by his first name, Tony.

However, the bank executive immediately corrected her and asked to be called either TOE or Mr Elumelu.

Following this, several individuals have commented on the issue including Omoyele Sowore. Also, an earlier statement of Ibikun Awosika addressing a similar issue resurfaced.

Na only Americana fit call am Tony. But naija trainee girl No get level na why. Compare to The Americana interviewer. There are levels to this things., even the rich will bend rules for you if they see say u get levels.

Putting Mr for person name in a cooperate setting is not a bad idea. Even whites will mostly Add Mr or Mrs or Miss.

When in Rome, behave like a Roman. Part of education is understanding culture. It doesn't take anything away from you. Use your head.

Most of you want to be like the Westerners but your lack of identity is your main problem so you just pick and choose what you feel like. If I tell you that the British who brought this education to us use Sir/Madam or Mr/Mrs, you will choose to ignore that. Or do you see a Japanese ignoring elders and the respect despite being exposed to the US? Una go just dey carry una head, big head de do anyhow. Things may have changed now but whenever foreigners came to our place, they noticed our use of honorifics. We called older people Aunty or Uncle but because some few people have abused children, our woke people said we should cancel the title so children can speak out. When Dads or Moms abuse their children, do we change the title just because of that 🤡 Pikin wey dem no train for house na for outside e go attend him skool

Different states, different takes. You're not educated or woke, you just put your ignorance in 4K

The other time I saw the Moroccans bowing to their prince and waiting for his kiss. The culture does not make sense to me but that's their environment, it's a monarchy. You gonna learn, no worry!

I don't think so. I think we excuse it but over time, people get to learn culture. People are not dumb. The British are wicked in this. They go de call you sir or madam and still de abuse you.

A child who learns to wash their hands clean will eat with kings.

In Nigerian culture, washing your hands does not just mean hygiene, it is about learning protocol, exhibiting deep respect, and understanding boundaries. Humility is not foolishness but an access card. When you show protocols and give honor to whom honor is due, you are not making yourself small. You are actually positioning yourself to be invited to the high table. It is the person who humbles themselves that gets elevated.

I think the person just as youthful exuberance. You go learn. Even the foreigners who come to work here learn the protocols and eventually adapt so all that crap of oyinbo or you work in a company that mandates first name basis no cut am. People know what they are doing. I wanted to go do a job in China, I learned their corporate etiquette and protocol. For instance, they do most of their negotiating at lunch, not the boardroom. You find out that inviting you to lunch or dinner is intimacy and treating you with respect. The way they sit down too, there is an arrangement by hierachy and when you want to clink your glass, you raise yours lower than the superior's. In this life you must have sense. You cannot just sit anywhere in a conference room. The highest-ranking host sits in the middle of the table facing the room's main entrance. The highest-ranking guest sits directly opposite them. These are things that you have to learn. It's not by knowledge or book smart alone. Bow that's the east. Western culture look similar but they are not if you are traveled. As near as Canada de to America, they don't have the same culture neither do all people in UK behave the same way. That's why on embassy pages, they tell you about where you are going and their culture. Even within Nigeria, there is a protocol for the President or Governor entering a place. You all rise up. What do I know sef? I just know in this world, you sometimes have to act like a fool in the fool's world.

Love how Mr Elumelu calmly addressed the issue

Also wondered what the apparently smart girl was hoping to achieve in the first place.

This one can't be blamed on Olodo uprising, can it?

This is how they kill confidence in people in this country all because of unnecessary formalities. Isn't his name Tonyhuh

We now go abroad and find it hard to fit in. Same reason we don't have good relationships across age gaps because of this issue.

There is nothing there. We need to stop being narrow minded and move beyond this primitive way of thinking.

My 2 cents ✌🏽

She dey too watch big brother Naija nii...

She sees how everyone in the house calls Ebuka by name and not Mr. Ebuka so she thought she could transfer that to an official settings.

Imagine if she was not shut down... That would automatically be the precedent for such disrespectful behavior and young people will begin to point to that as a turning point for our respectful cultural heritage.

Thank you Mr. Tony for stopping such Gen Z like behavior.

I like the way He responded. He wasnt arrogant. Just matter of fact, even chuckled. And He let her continue after correcting Her. Trump MAY have asked Her to be thrown out.

Many organisations deliberately encourage all staff to call each other by first names - whether old or young. But honestly, it creates more problems because the younger ones will always feel uncomfortable about it.

I love how majority of the comments above are addressing the matter concretely.

You can't bullshit the culture of an environment in which you're addressing people.

If there was a King or Sultan there, will she call them by their name? Certainly not.

Well the lady took the correction in good stride. Na just the bhupphons dey get fits

Make effort to be conscious of what is culturally appropriate in every setting.

In as much as I comfortably call my Chief Executive, the 001 of the London borough I work for by her first name, I can never call Ibukun Awosika, Ibukun when engaging her....I no dey craze.😂😂😂

When i worked in advertising, in this same Nigeria, we called each other by our first names, there was no issue.

Na lie. It depends on corporate culture or culture of a company or a place.

There’s nothing wrong in calling someone by his or her first name.

Why it sounds so absurd is because we are not used to it, in some quarters.

Even there are some race where children still call their fathers, mothers and elder ones by name till today.

Name is just an identifier.

Every rich or big personality can be called by name.

Do you say Mr. Tinubu or Mr. Obi or Mr. MKO or Mr. Ojaja (Ooni of Ife) etc?

We used to call global CEO and other top officials of our multinational company in NIgeria by their fist name.
