Nigeria loses 47% of dollar millionaires, retains 4th position in Africa

Nigeria has lost nearly half of its dollar millionaires over the past decade, with the population of high-net-worth individuals falling by 47 per cent between 2015 and 2025, according to the 2025 Africa Wealth Report by Henley & Partners in collaboration with New World Wealth.

Despite the sharp erosion in private wealth, Nigeria retained its position as Africa’s fourth-largest hub for dollar millionaires, with 7,200 millionaires, 20 centi-millionaires (individuals with investable wealth of at least $100 million) and three billionaires, trailing only South Africa, Egypt and Morocco.

The report showed that South Africa remained the continent’s wealthiest country by number of dollar millionaires, with 41,100 millionaires, 112 centi-millionaires and eight billionaires. Egypt followed with 14,800 millionaires, 49 centi-millionaires and seven billionaires.

Nigeria operating voodoo economy – Tinubu

FORMER Lagos State Governor, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, yesterday, dissected Nigeria’s economy and declared that the country was operating a voodoo economic policy that is pauperising the citizenry and urged urgent economic surgery to save the polity.

For instance, Tinubu wondered why the Federal Government is maintaining a foreign reserve of $46 billion with one or two per cent interest and shouldering a load of $42 billion domestic debt, which it services with 16 per cent interest.

“This is voodoo economy,” he said, adding, “they are operating it because they don’t know what to do. It is choking the private sector.

“We must in this country do away with the idea of ‘it is better save the money and spend the people.’ Rather I will say we should adopt the policy of ‘it is better to save the people and spend the fund.’

NNPCL’s subsidy payment jump by 47.9% to N7.1trn in 2024

November 26, 2025

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) paid a total of N7.1 trillion as subsidy for premium motor spirit (PMS) in 2024, this sum represents a 47.9 percent increase from N4.8 trillion recorded in 2023.

This is despite the government’s announcement of subsidy removal in 2023.

The company explained that the amount, which it termed ‘energy security expense’ arises when there is differential between the exchange rate used to freeze the premium motor spirit ex-coastal price and the prevailing rate at the point of import settlement.

According to the report, government had instructed that NNPC Limited cannot sell its PMS above a certain regulated price. It added that the cost of petrol import is usually much higher that the regulated price.

Appeal Court Removed ‘Illegal’ NURTW President ‘MC Oluomo’, But He Won’t Quit Office

Musiliu Akinsanya, a former chairman of the Lagos State Parks and Management Committee, has continued to disregard the law in acting as national president of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), a trade union of transport workers in the country.

In November 2024, a Court of Appeal in Abuja affirmed an earlier National Industrial Court of Nigeria judgment pronouncing Tajudeen Ibikunle Baruwa as president of the union.

Baruwa had served for four years and he was to be serving his second term, having been reelected in August 2023, three months to the termination of his first tenure as enunciated by the union’s constitution.

To use a footballing parlance, he has close marked Peter Obí out of making important decisions that might threaten President Tinubu in the elections.

Peter Obi should have stayed in ADC and accepted the VP slot. He is now in a much smaller party and his Obidients are being taken for granted in NDC. Prof Utomi did his job well in 2023 and has now exceeded that already.

Tinubu is too selfish and narrow minded that he cares about loyalty to anyone apart from his extremely greedy self.
How did we end up with this Frankenstein as our leader looter in chief?

SixSeven:
2011 is not a new playbook. It was first done in 2003 with Atiku.

Prior to the April 2011 election, the ACN was trying to broker a last-minute northern opposition alliance with Muhammadu Buhari's party, the CPC. When those talks collapsed, Tinubu and the ACN leadership realized that Nuhu Ribadu could not win the presidency on his own.

To protect his political empire, Tinubu met with Goodluck Jonathan. Tinubu's part of the deal was that the ACN would stop supporting Ribadu. Instead, they would secretly tell their followers in the South-West to vote for Jonathan for president. In return, Jonathan promised that the federal government would not rig or steal the state governor elections. He would let the ACN win and rule the South-West.

…Give August 11 deadline over outstanding wage awards, 40% allowance

Less than five days after the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Taiwo Oyedele, said savings from the fuel subsidy removal were used to pay public servants’ salaries and wages, among other obligations, the Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council, JNPSNC, has accused the Federal Government of failing to meet key welfare commitments to workers.

The council has consequently demanded an urgent meeting with the minister over the non-payment of two months’ wage award arrears and the delayed implementation of the 40 per cent peculiar allowance for federal public servants, warning that failure to resolve the issues could trigger a nationwide strike.

While Makinde has cleared his promise of six months wage awards and adding three months to it, the master strategist of a-looter propaganda politics has failed to finish paying his six months wage award announced in October 2023!

If a state governor who gets 1/36 share of the 27% for all governors can do this and more, then why not Tinubu who alone gets 53% of the FAAC?

fergie001:
We are going through a challenging period economically. I put out a video, yes, our FAAC has gone up but when I came in here the first salary bill I signed was ₦4.5b but today the salary bill is ₦18b. In all of these, the minimum wage then was ₦18000, and today it's ₦80000 but the ₦18000 then can even buy more than what the ₦80000 will get you today. That's the kind of voodoo economics they brought to us. So, we have to sit down, NLC, because our people are challenged economically. The resources are limited but the wage award which ended in September I will extend for another three months. Our subsidy on transport we will continue with it and so again, I want thank all of you especially the workers for your dedication , commitment and support.

Impeachment Threat: More unrest for Fashola , as Festus Keyamo asks Court to Dismiss Fashola’s Suit

10 FEB 2010

Huhuonline.com can confirm that counsel to the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mr. Festus Keyamo has asked a High Court sitting in Lagos to strike out the suit instituted by a journalist, Mr. Richard Akinola to stop the state assembly from investigating financial impropriety levelled against the embattled Governor of Lagos state, Mr. Babatunde Fashola who has been having tough time with his predecessor/god-father, Bola Tinubu .

Available facts have it that Festus Keyamo is going all out to ensuring that allegations of financial misappropriations and looting against the Governor are not swept under the carpet. Huhuonline.com understands that Mr. Festus is praying the court to dismiss the suit, arguing that the action is incompetent, frivolous, speculative and an abuse of legal process. Citing from Section 4 [6] and [7], Mr. Keyamo says the respondent were right to set up a 6-man panel which was not to try the governor but rather to be informed as to whether there was a basis to proceed further with the allegations.

It could be recalled that a court sitting in Ikorodu had granted an order restraining the State House Of Assembly from proceeding with its probe on allegations of financial impropriety levelled against the state Governor, Mr Babatunde Fashola and the state lawmakers.

In his short ruling, Justice Habeeb Abiru held that an order of interim injunction is hereby made restraining the defendant, that is, the Lagos state House of Assembly, whether by themselves, agents, members, officers or by whosoever from proceeding with or acting on the purported investigation of allegations of financial impropriety levelled against the executive an legislative arms of Lagos state government by a group published in a punch newspaper of January 28, 2010 under the caption “The True Face of Lagos” or by any other group pending the determination of the motion on notice.A journalist and human rights activist, Richard Akinnola, has filed a suit before a Lagos High Court sitting in Ikeja, against the Lagos State House of Assembly, asking for a declaration by the court that the decision of the defendant to set up a committee to investigate the allegation of financial impropriety levied against the executive and legislative arms of Lagos State government is unconstitutional.

Amongst other claims, Mr. Akinnola wants a perpetual injunction of the court restraining the defendant or its agents from proceeding on the purported investigation of the allegations levied against it by a group under the caption, “The True Face of Lagos”.₦20m allegationIn the affidavit in support of the originating summon, Mr. Akinnola stated that a group under the caption “The True Face of Lagos” had, in the Punch Newspaper of January 28, 2010 placed an advert containing allegations of financial misappropriation against the executive and legislative arms of the state government.

Accordingly, the following allegations were made against the defendant: “it was alleged that each member of the House was given a sum of ₦20 million through a lawyer member of the House from the Lagos West Senatorial District, (the constituency of the Governor emeritus himself).” It continued, “when this was about to be leaked to the press, the Lion of Bourdillon used his powerful media contacts through two of his former aides who are media chieftains to suppress the leakage. Were this not to be the case, we would have otherwise sent these complaints to the House of Assembly. But since we no longer trust this pliant House of Assembly, we have decided to go public

The campaign spokesman said the candidate incidentally shared an address with notorious cocaine dealers in the 1990s.

Festus Keyamo, chief spokesman for the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential campaign council, has said Bola Tinubu, the party’s flag bearer, only shared a “block of flats” with notorious cocaine dealers in Chicago, pushing back after the release of court documents that suggested Mr Tinubu’s ties to illicit drug business and money laundering in the United States.

“What happened was that Asiwaju (Bola Tinubu) went to open an account. The address which he used in opening the account was the address used by these people…(sic). I think some blocks of flats. Maybe, he happened to be in that block of flats too.

“So, they now link it that the other people they were investigating for narcotics are in the same address used by Asiwaju to open that account,” Mr Keyamo said on Wednesday on Channels Television programme to exonerate the former Lagos governor from the fresh controversies that had been trailing his involvement in drug peddling.

Peoples Gazette on Tuesday published certified copies of the 1993 case as recently released by the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois.

The documents confirmed that the U.S. government had in July 1993 sought forfeiture of proceeds of narcotics Mr Tinubu was accused of laundering. The matter was resolved in a compromise between the Tinubus and the U.S. authorities, with the Tinubus being asked to keep the money in the Heritage Bank account while the $460,000 in the Citibank account was forfeited.

A federal judge subsequently dismissed the matter with prejudice on September 21, 1993, which effectively foreclosed the matter from being litigated again by all parties. It, however, remained unclear whether or not Nigerian authorities could still bring charges against Mr Tinubu over the same case in Nigerian courts.

The former Lagos governor has come under intense public scrutiny over his opaque past, health status and allegations of corruption. He has not personally commented on the latest case, but his campaign surrogates have emphasised that the matter was insignificant and would not be a factor in the upcoming elections.

According to the former Lagos Governor, he adopted the delegation method “to show team-ship”.

At the lecture, Tinubu after his opening remarks, assigned Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai to speak on how his (Tinubu-led) government would address insecurity and asked the Director of Strategic Communication of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council, Dele Aleke, to respond to the question on oil theft.

Thescrutinyng:
The former president spoke during a keynote interview at the ongoing Financial Times Africa Summit 2026 in London, United Kingdom, where he criticised the administration’s handling of the economy, particularly the devaluation of the naira and the removal of petrol subsidy.

Reacting to the sharp depreciation of the naira, Obasanjo said the policy had significantly reduced the purchasing power of Nigerians and contributed to the country’s position as the poverty capital of the world.

“We do not live in isolation as a country. We interact with the rest of the world. And overnight, you devalue the currency by 300 percent. The naira went from N500 to a dollar to N1,500 to a dollar. What that meant was that every Nigerian is made poor by 300 percent. That made Nigeria to become the poverty capital of the world, which means Nigeria has the largest number of poor people in the world. You cannot say to me that that is good for Nigeria. You cannot say to me that that is good for us in any sense,” he said.

On the removal of petrol subsidy, Obasanjo argued that corruption accounted for a substantial part of the cost of maintaining the subsidy regime, insisting that tackling corruption could reduce the amount of subsidy required.

“Petrol and petroleum products affect everybody and everything. Now, what we call subsidy for petroleum products in Nigeria, a lot of it is corruption. And I believe that if we pay attention to corruption and deal with corruption, then what will remain of subsidy will be very little. If we take care of corruption in the system, I believe that the subsidy that we will need will be much more less,” he said.

When asked whether Tinubu deserved a second term to see his policies through and consolidate on their gains, the former president challenged the premise of the question.

“What policies are you seeing through? You impoverish your people and you want to see impoverishment through? What are you seeing through?” Obasanjo asked.

Obasanjo also compared Nigeria’s economic performance with that of Ghana, citing the movement of the Ghanaian cedi against the United States dollar as an example of a different economic trajectory.

“Now compare the situation in Nigeria with Ghana. I understand that the present president of Ghana… took over when cedi was 16 cedis to a dollar. Within six months, he took it to 10 cedis to the dollar. You can see the difference. What do you say to that?” he said.

ProfDumbledor:
Each April and October, the World Poverty Clock data are updated to take into account new household surveys (an additional 97 surveys were made available this April) and new projections on country economic growth from the International Monetary Funds’s World Economic Outlook. These form the basic building blocks for poverty trajectories computed for 188 countries and territories, developed and developing, across the world.

The data highlight two new storylines about what is happening to global extreme poverty.

First: Extreme poverty in today’s world is largely about Africa

According to our projections, Nigeria has already overtaken India as the country with the largest number of extreme poor in early 2018, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo could soon take over the number 2 spot (Figure 1 below). At the end of May 2018, our trajectories suggest that Nigeria had about 87 million people in extreme poverty, compared with India’s 73 million. What is more, extreme poverty in Nigeria is growing by six people every minute, while poverty in India continues to fall. In fact, by the end of 2018 in Africa as a whole, there will probably be about 3.2 million more people living in extreme poverty than there are today.

‘Nigerians tell me to slow down, freezers are freezing’ — Power Minister

The Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, on Wednesday said some Nigerians had asked him to “slow down” the improvement in electricity supply because, according to him, their freezers were now working continuously.

Tegbe made the statement in Abuja while speaking at the commissioning of the 3-megawatt solar hybrid power project at Yakubu Gowon University, formerly the University of Abuja.

The minister said he had been receiving feedback from electricity consumers following improvements in power supply in some parts of the country.

“Places that didn’t have light at all for three months are now having 18 hours light. Some areas called me to say, look, I should slow down, that everything in their freezer is freezing.

“That is what freezer is meant to do. Let it freeze the food that needs to be frozen,” Tegbe said.

Tegbe said he had promised during his Senate screening that Nigerians would begin to see noticeable improvements in electricity supply within three to six months.
