NDLEA Opposes Bail For 10 Defendants In ₦480 Billion Ogun Meth Lab Case by yaroinside(op): 7:02am On Aug 21
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has opposed bail for 10 defendants standing trial over an alleged clandestine methamphetamine laboratory in Ogun State.

The defendants were arraigned before the Federal High Court in Lagos over an alleged operation involving the production of 2,419.48 kilogrammes of methamphetamine.

The NDLEA described the defendants as flight risks and urged the court to reject their applications for bail.

Defendants seek freedom

The 10 defendants, comprising seven Nigerians and three Mexican nationals, have been in custody since their arraignment on July 10.

Their lawyer, Chief Benson Ndakara, argued that they were presumed innocent until proven guilty and were ready to provide reliable sureties if granted bail.

The defence also raised concerns about the health of some of the defendants, saying they required special medical attention.

NDLEA cites alleged international network

The anti-drug agency opposed the application, arguing that releasing the defendants could allow them to evade trial.

The prosecution said three of the defendants are Mexican nationals, while the first defendant, whom it described as the alleged financier and organiser, has dual Nigerian and Mexican citizenship.

The NDLEA also alleged that the laboratory at Iloti Village in Ogun State was established and equipped for the illicit production of methamphetamine.

According to the prosecution, equipment, chemicals and other materials allegedly linked to the production of the drug were recovered from the facility.

Court fixes September 2 for ruling

After hearing arguments from both sides, Justice Akintayo Aluko adjourned the matter until September 2, 2026, for ruling on the bail applications.

The defendants have pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The court’s decision on September 2 will determine whether the 10 defendants remain in custody or are released under conditions pending the continuation of their trial.

Meth is a deadly chemical that ruins the lives of thousands of people.

Lock the producers of that poison away for 50 years in jail with hard labor and NO option of a fine or bail consideration.

There needs to be a revision of Nigeria's criminal law.

The current sentencing tariffs for some crimes aren't fit for today's circumstances.

Sentencing for 100, 150, 180 years in prison needs to be the norm for certain crimes. These sort of super lengthy sentences will send a serious message to criminals and their relatives. Trust me, parents will go back to raising their young children properly.

Sentencing someone to 'life imprisonment' just doesn't have the same psycholohical impact on society anymore even if the final outcome is the same as the super lengthy sentencing above.

Imagine if someone convicted of raping a child, or producing these horrible illegal drugs that is wrecking havoc on society is sentenced to 170 years in prison. I bet you, these crimes will reduce significantly.

He was lucky that Chicago is not in China, otherwise we would not have had the misfortune of having him loot us blind as he is doing in Lagos since 1999 and in the entire country since 2023.

Do you think that Keyamo could have arranged the same forfeiture for him in China huh

Festus Keyamo Defends Tinubu From Drug Trafficking, Says Tinubu Mistakenly Shared Flats With Drug Lords

The Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Mr Festus Keyamo, has distanced the All Progressive Congress presidential candidata, Bola Tinubu, from being a drug baron who was involved in the traffic of narcotics in the United States.

Keyamo, who also doubles as APC Presidential Campaign spokesperson, noted that the former governor of Lagos State only shared a block of flat with drug barons about 30 years ago in the US.

His reaction is coming following documents of a Chicago District Court indicting and convicting Tinubu of drug dealings and money laundering in 1993.

The document which emerged online two days ago, described APC standard-bearer as a drug baron, adding that Tinubu entered a plea bargain, leading to the forfeiture of his assets to US authorities in 1993

It was also pointed out that Tinubu forfeited the sum of $460, 000 dollars in his bank account at First Heritage Bank to the US government.

Speaking on Wednesday on Channels TV, Mr Keyamo dismissed such claims, insisting that Tinubu was linked to drug peddlers who were his neighbours.

He said: “What happened was that Tinubu went to open an account. The address which he used in opening the account was the address used by these people. I think some blocks of flats. Maybe, he was happy to be in that block of flats too.

“So, they now link it that the other people they were investigating for narcotics are in the same address used by Asiwaju to open that account.’’
